According to their official website, The Apollo Theater will begin celebrating its 75th Anniversary of Amateur Night with a performance by Harlem’s own Ron Browz on Wed, January 28th. The first 75 tickets are being sold for $7.50 to commemorate the event.

The Apollo Theater was built in 1914 on 125th Street, the heart of Harlem. Originally, it was named Hurtig and Seamon’s New Burlesque Theatre and African-Americans were not allowed in the audience. In 1934 Ralph Cooper, Sr. decided to do a live version of his already popular radio show, Amateur Nite Hour at the Apollo^TM, at the Apollo Theater, then owned by the Schiffman family. Ella Fitzgerald, who invented the vocal technique known as “SCAT”, was one of the first Amateur Night winners.

Since then the legendary venue has launched the careers of icons such as Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, the late James Brown and Lauryn Hill and continues to maintain its position as the nation’s most popular arena for emerging and established African-American and Latino performers.

In 1991 DJ Kid Capri recorded a tribute track called “The Apollo” for his debut album The Tape:

I was tempted to audio blog this one out using mangled Arabic of my own, but held back.

My good buddy Sir Mance-a-lot already expressed how I feel about the song’s implications, much to director Rik Cordero’s chagrin. Today we finally haterize the equally flagrant and culturally insensitive visual representation of Busta Rhymes and Ron Browz’s “Arab Money.” [pronounced AYE-rab]

I can’t help but wonder what actual AYE-rabs think of this shit. I’m actually afraid to play it in their presence even for journalistic purposes as some of the more hardcore fundamentalists get a little liberal and sloppy with the Jihad talk. Catching backlash from obscure gangsta rappers is one thing. Going balls-out Salman Rushdie is some whole next shit.

“Dude… You never go full-Rushdie.”

Unfortunately, Busta and his host of “a kazillion D-list rapsters” have no problem doing so as they desecrate the keffiyeh by saturating it with cognac, pork rib sauce and weed smoke. You’d think DJ Khaled would intervene on behalf of his people. Instead, he secures Coon of the Year honors for his enthusiastic participation in a video that disgraces the entire fertile crescent.

At least we’re spared the sound of his voice for once.

World War III is temporarily averted as one of the cubicle monkeys at Universal Motown clearly advised these shiftless nigroes to fix the “Aye-rab” mispronunciation in the chorus. Too bad no one suggested they clean up the offensive and intentional butchery of “Aye-rab” language… and NOT cast Indian dudes as Arab princes.

You also can’t fool me with them Puerto Rican chicks at the door. I know a damn Puerto Rican when I see one. Them broads from Middle East Harlem. Fuck outta here.

For shame, Cordero. Someone should inform my Q-borough representative that green screen is the root of all evil. I’m pretty sure that phony backdrops and excessive Auto-Tune use will be the subject of the next highly-anticipated Al-Qaeda mixtape.

Either that or Ghadafi Grillz Presents: Dedication 4. You never know what’ll be available for download on datpiff.com these days.

If there’s any positive to be taken from this hot ghetto mess, concerned viewers should be as relieved as I am to see that Spliff Star still finds employment as Busta’s lap ferret during these trying economic times. I’m pretty sure there’s no bailout plan in the works for aging hype men, so that’s what’s up.

Speaking of aging, it’s pretty fucked up watching a once-sprightly Busta Rhymes waddle laboriously around the video set like Redd Foxx. I kind of want to have him and his grandpa belly put down so I can watch the “Woo-Hah” video with clear conscience.

I can’t believe they put an Emperor Palpatine visage of Yasser Arafat in the video to gamble with. For starters, he wouldn’t dig on the keffiyehs that reek of Pork Chops O’ Chunky. Secondly, I done already told these niggas on XXL, AYE-rab money don’t fold. You can’t make it rain with oil fortunes unless there are Patriot Missiles involved. These one-flop-away-from-foreclosure record label slaves couldn’t step to the tables they Auto-Tune whine about.

Sigh. At least Busta actually delivers an Arabic chorus on the remix. I only know this to be true because he bellows the only Arabic phrase any American rapper ever knows.

Questlove Endorses Jim Jones, Ron Browz As Next

?uestlove and The Roots have a lot to look forward to coming into 2009. With their new gig as the official house band for Jimmy Fallon’s late night show on NBC, the Philadelphian sextet will get to shine every week for the millions of viewers watching. Though this career move takes them into a different element of entertainment, they still have their eye on the Hip Hop world.

Speaking with DJ Semtex, ?uestlove gave his predictions on who to look out for in Hip Hop for the new year, including Harlem’s recent go-to auto-tuner and self-proclaimed “Ether Boy” producer, Ron Browz. “I think he’s probably gonna be the next sound of America. Jim Jones and Busta [Rhymes] got an early start on him,” said ?uestlove.

On a lower level of exposure, ?uest praised a group of rappers from the Houston area that caught his ear. “On the underground tip, there’s a crew from Houston, Texas. They’re a collective of like 12 emcees, with the initials HSIC. To me, the stuff that I heard from their MySpace page is the same feeling I got when I first heard Little Brother and what LB did for North Carolina underground Hip Hop. Or what Slum Village did for Detroit. I feel like these guys are gonna make Houston that next spot that you wouldn’t think is an underground Hip Hop spot.”

When asked who he felt would be the face of Hip Hop for ’09, ?uest gave an answer that may catch many by surprise. “You know what, there’s gonna be a sucker punch. I think [Jim] Jones is gonna come from out the shadows. Like for some reason I think Jones is gonna hit the bull’s eye with this album [Prey IV Reign].”
Continuing, ?uestlove stated, “I don’t think he needs Dipset. There’s a hustle about him… If he can just manage to churn out three to four songs to the level of ‘Pop Champagne,’ I think Jim Jones is gonna hustle his way to the celebritydom that he’s been vying for.”

Producer-ternt-Autotune offender Ron Browz enlists the help of fellow Harlemites Jim Jones and Juelz Santana to “Pop Champagne” and get the lite feet going.

Damn, homie. I thought Fantasia Barrino would have made enough money from The Color Purple whereas she’d never have to dance in anyone’s video again. I guess Harpo doesn’t pay as well as a nigga would think.

“Jimmy… *lip quivering* Jimmy BEAT me. But I ain’t gon’ let him pour no mo’ Cristal on me.”

Speaking of pouring champagne on inappropriate targets, what the hell is up with this bartender chick? Is she fuckin retarded? Why is she still pouring the champange into Ron Browz’s glass? Any hoodrat should know that fake Roleys ain’t cognac-resistant. That’s in the handbook. Page 79 of Hoodrat’s Guide to the Universe expresses this clearly.

A better set of questions includes, “Why the fuck doesn’t Ron Browz stop her from pouring all over his rented shit?” Maybe his hand is still numb from that “stranger” he gave himself after every “model” at the shoot turned him down thinking he was Memphis Bleek.

Sigh. Between this and “Aye-rab Money” I’m ashamed to be a Ron from Harlem.

Despite the massive amount of shit I’ve given them over the years, it’s nice to see some Diplomatic [Imm]Unity. Looks like somebody left Cam’ron off the e-vite, though. That’s pretty fucked up. You know shit is bad when Jimmy and Juelz invite Zeke and “forget” to CC: Killa.

Speaking of the dipshits–for a group of grown-ass niggas that put “no homo” at the end of everything, they sure looked content skeeting frothy champagne all over one another without having won no championship or nothin. Unless Jimmy finally won the Shit Without Shower national title, this could be misconstrued as “suspect” behavior.

If there’s anything positive to take away from having watched this direct result of recession-related unemployment, it’s that Busta Rhymes has been spotted somewhere other than Dallas BBQ. Someone really should introduce him to the lite feet dance. If he’s gonna go on the N.O.R.E. diet he might as well burn calories while gettin twisted off shit us writers can’t pronounce.
