Since you are what you eat, as a hip-hop junky in his 30s a lot of what is being served out there just isn’t palatable to me. But thankfully my position at TheUrbandaily brings me in contact with sounds and artists that may have otherwise gone overlooked. Following the relative drought of music in 2010, 2011 has brought a gorilla monsoon of rap and a tsunami of soul. With so many people driving home the misconception that hip-hop is dead, I’d like to share the ten albums that have helped keep me alive this year. Happy Thanksgiving.

Pharaohe Monch, W.A.R, We Are Renegades

I’ve been a fan of Monch since he was cussing people out for stealing his last piece of chicken. The irony is that if I heard about a song called “Who Stole My Last Piece Of Chicken” in 2011 I would probably throw my iPod against a wall. But since then Pharoahe Monch has proven to be one of the most thought-provoking artists I’ve ever heard (maybe there is hope for the Weezy after all.) This year he joined forces with Duck Down records to release his third solo album, W.A.R. We Are Renegades. After one listen the album impressed me so much that I constructed a making of the album, interviewing almost a dozen different people that contributed to it. While his previous project Desire showcased his wide range of abilities, Monch chose this time to constrict his focus and deliver the heavy-hitting linguistics and jaw-breaking production that earned him fans across the globe. Instead of raging against the machine Monch gave detailed instructions on how to break into it and dismantle it from the inside.

“If you are not performing fellatio for radio rotation /What’s the ratio for radio play at your station? /If you’re not paying to play, the record is dead /Puts a whole new spin on radio head/Radiohead”–The Hitmen

Steal this song: “Still Standing” /F Jill Scott

DJ Quik, The Book of David

While everyone played a game of “hurry-up-and-wait” with Dr. Dre’s Detox, another West Coast veteran laced us with his eighth studio album, The Book of David. Mr. Blake reinforced why he is one of the best rapping producers alive walking the line of being a gangsta (“So Compton”) and a gentleman (“Luv of My Life”). “Records like ‘Luv of My Life’ are reddish, greenish, orange,” he said in our interview. ” ‘Real Women’ is clear, it’s colorless. It’s a white diamond. I sampled that from Dave Grushen and Angela Bofill. Don’t you love my range and my diversity?” Yes, we do.

Steal this song: “Time Stands Still” f/ Dwele

Kendrick Lamar, Section 80

I literally discovered this brother by accident proving that word of mouth still matters. When I interviewed producer Wyldfyer he told me he’d done the track “Kush and Corinthians” for this album, so I downloaded the entire thing on GP and was not disappointed. I used to think every 80s babies had their life graded on a curve before listening to Section.80. However, Kendrick Lamar has a gift for making simple truths seem profound that I haven’t felt since Ice Cube’s Death Certificate, but with the musical sentiments that harken back to Bone Thugs N Harmony. “And then she started/ And then she started/Feeling herself like no on else in this apartment/Beg your pardon/Oh I rap baby, how old are you?/She say 22, I say 23/Ok then we are crack babies…”

Steal this song: “No Make Up” F/ Colin Munroe

Phonte Coleman, Charity Starts At Home

The subtitle of this album should be “Mind Of The Married Man” because I don’t think any hip-hop album has so dealt with the realities and challenges of matrimony so honestly before. We’ve had songs about relationships, sure. But this whole album is just over your head if you’re under 30 and never had to share bills under the same roof with somebody. There, I said it. When he rhymes on “Sending My Love” that he was “arguing about some shit rooted in some other shit/ long story short it was a night I ain’t feel like coming home…” every man in a long term relationship is going “chu’uch” and “tabernacle.” So I’m personally thankful that there is somebody addressing emotions from a man’s perspective that doesn’t drunk dial his exes.

Steal this song: “Who Loves You More”

Torae, For The Record

For the past five years or so New York hip-hop has endured slander of epic proportions. Nicki Minaj notwithstanding, MCs from the 5 boroughs have had to learn to subsist on a subterranean level like the folks in Demolition Man. And like that movie, much of what is being served on the surface is Taco Bell level filler. Thankfully MCs like Coney Island’s “Young Veteran” Torae have not rejected their city’s boom-bap DNA while still managing to evolve. After recording his collabo album with producer Marco Polo, Double Barrel, Torae has complete his first official solo album with production from DJ Premier, Large Professor, Diamond D and many more. But beyond the headphone friendly beats, Torae manipulates words like a Soul Train scramble board contestant cheating on their SATs: “I got the energy of Left Eye/ride through the Honduras like it’s Bed Stuy/The good die young so at 12 I got the double breast, a pair of steps and a neck tie…”

Steal this song: “Imagine”

Focus, Music Of The Misinterpreted

Most of you reading this probably don’t know how much Focus has impacted your musical life. The Grammy Award winning producer was once a staff producer for Dr. Dre’s Aftermath label and is responsible for laying the sonic foundations to Beyonce’s “Yes” , J.LO’s “Dear Ben”, Marsha Ambrosius’ “Tears” and Busta Rhymes’ “Respect My Conglomerate” just to name a microspic sample of his catalog. Not to mention that his father is former CHIC bassist, the late Bernard Edwards, so music is literally in his blood. But this year the producer has stepped from behind the boards to deliver his message on the mic with a little help from his friends. After having Music Of The Misinterpreted on repeat for several days I’m convinced this man should have been rapping way before this.
“Seems like I’m always gettin’ looked over, cold shoulder, but I bear with it–polar/Me and the industry was like lovers/put nothin above her/ but we’re growin apart as I get older/now I find a niche sink my teeth in–molar/I’m eatin and seen with the big stars–solar/I came a long way and taught a couple cats and now I’ ma force to be wreckoned with–Yoda.”

Music Of The Misinterpreted is what the 99% would sound like if they had…focus.
Occupy Beat Street, bitches.

Steal this song: “1ne” (feat. Embassy Music Board & Tez McClain)

Jill Scott, The Light Of The Sun

In an era when artists are churning out albums on an annual basis Jill Scott has mastered the art of making us wait. While I’m sure the contractual wranglings with her former label Hidden Beach contributed to the four year hiatus after The Real Thing: Words and Sounds Vol 3., it served to whet the collective appetites of her fans, stans and google images stalkers. Once I stopped staring at the album cover the music was every bit as confident, seductive and renewed as the front image led us to believe. Who do you know can craft a female empowerment anthem like “Womanifesto” then turn around and sing about diamond d*cks without sounding the least bit contradictory? Jill Scott, that’s who.

Steal this song: “Rolling Hills”

Saigon, The Greatest Story Never Told

To say that I was happy this album dropped is an understatement. Back when I was the editor of Scratch magazine I’d featured Saigon and his producer Just Blaze on the cover in homage to Gang Starr. Sai played me several cuts back then that thoroughly impressed me and five years later the world finally got to hear what I did. For folks who were missing that aggressive, slap-your-chef-for-using-too-much-paprika level of sonic ignorance from Just Blaze GSNT had all you were waiting for. Then add Saigon’s sicker-than-your-average lyrics and this is one story you can tuck your wealth in at night to.

Steal this song: “Preacher”

Eric Roberson, Mr. Nice Guy

That line between love and hate isn’t always thin. There is a whole four-lane highway’s worth of experiences and emotions that singers like Eric Roberson tap into with ease. Ever since I was first introduced to erro via “Find A Way” and “Couldn’t Here Me Over The Music” and “Def Ears” from his The Vault vol 1 I’ve felt a kindred spirit with this brother. Some woman at some point in his life has jacked.him.up! And I’m man enough to say that I can relate. Whether it’s that one you had that didn’t quite work out or the one you didn’t have that never got a chance to fail, Eric paints those shades of gray with broad strokes. His latest collection, Mr. Nice Guy, is arguably his most complete album since The Vault and any fan should scoop this up immediately.

Steal this song: “Love’s Withdrawal” f/ Omari Hardwick

Killer Mike, PL3DGE

I’ve been an admirer of our Rhyme of The Week recipient since his days of rapping about “A.D.I.D.A.S” but I honestly haven’t consumed many of Killer Mike’s albums since then. As talented as he is on the mic (and articulate in person) I never felt like his beats did him justice. However, after hearing the high praise for his PLEDGE series I decided to take a listen to the third installment and Mike Bigga has truly evolved. From the political chin-check of “That’s Life II” to the unlicensed bravado of “Ric Flair” he’s more than found his groove and I was happy that I could find songs with substance with beats I wanna ride to. Word to PE.

Steal this song: “That’s Life II”

It’s no coincidence that several of these artists have collaborated with each other on their respective projects. I’m just tuned into a certain frequency I guess.

Every year since 2008, XXL Magazine has released a “Freshmen Class” issue, which consists of new rappers who have the potential to be breakout artists. These MCs have created a buzz for themselves via the internet, social media or by simply staying consistent and dropping mixtapes left and right.

But where are they now? It’s one thing to predict the future, but almost four years later whose career has panned out? TheUrbandaily takes a look back at XXL’s Freshmen Class of 2008 “Leaders Of The New School” to see who graduated, who dropped out and who might have failed.

Name: Lil’ Boosie

From: Baton Rouge, Louisiana,

Releases: Bad Azz (2006), Superbad: The Return of Boosie Bad Azz (2009) Incarcerated (2010)

Lil Boosie had a great start. His unique flow and voice had gained him enough attention to possibly be the next hottest rap artist coming out of the south. The first and only single off Bad Azz, “Zoom,” featured Yung Joc and helped Boosie grab the attention of hip hop fans. However, there was one small problem with Lil’ Boosie, he lived the troublesome life he rapped about. In 2010 he was sent to prison for violation of his probation. He did release his Incarcerated album from behind bars, but as you know jail can make or break a rap artist.

Plies released not one but two albums in 2008, Definition Of Real & Tha REAList. Although Plies has started to cool off, his fans are still humming along to his hit “Bust It Baby Pt 2.” It’s sample of Janet Jackson’s “Come Back To Me” makes it a quiet storm staple for sensitive thugs everywhere.

Crooked I had seen his fair share of setbacks before appearing on the cover. From Virgin Records to Death Row and now with Shady as a member of SlaughterHouse. He formed super group Slaughterhouse with classmate Joell Ortiz, Joe Budden and Royce Da 5’9. Since appearing on the cover in 2008 Crooked I has taken his grind into over time.
Name: Saigon

You would think with a co-sign from Jay-Z, Kanye West and Kool G Rap he would have stepped into the rap game with no problems. Nevertheless, Saigon publicly battled Atlantic Records over the release of The Greatest Story Ever Told. While in label limbo he released two mixtapes Warning Shots and All In A Days Work. After years of fighting to be released from Atlantic with the material, Saigon finally got what he asked for and with the help of Just Blaze and MTV’s Sway he finally released The Greatest Story Ever Told in 2011.

He later publicly battled Atlantic Records to release the Lasers album which caused fans to sign petitions and protest outside of the Atlantic records office. As a result, Lasers was finally released in March of 2011. The album debuted on the Billboard 200 at #1 with 204,200 copies sold, the highest of Lupe’s career. He has not released any chart topping hits since appearing on the cover. But being signed to T.I.’s Grand Hustle we’re sure Young Dro will be coming back better than ever.

Name: Joell Ortiz

From: Brooklyn, NY.

We’re only a few months into 2011 but we’ve already been blessed with some really strong music releases. Raekwon, Talib Kweli, Saigon and Pharoahe Monch have set the bar high for the remainder of this years hip-hop releases. If you haven’t heard them yet make sure you go and cop them.

Raewkon–Shaolin vs Wutang

The Wutang Chef’s fifth solo album keeps the grit of this signature “Cuban Linx” franchise but invites unusual suspects like Rick Ross, Black Thought and Raheem DeVaughn to create a new and unique experience for his fans.

Talib Kweli–Gutter Rainbows

This is the album most fans were expecting when Reflection Eternal’s Revolutions Per Minute dropped in 2010. With production by 88-Keys, M-Phazes and Ski Beatz is more raw and less experimental than the RPM but it is no less satisfying. Talib is still lyrical potent but feels more relaxed on the mic.

Saigon- The Greatest Story Never Told

The running joke for years was that Saigon’s title was a self-fulfilling prophecy. With every delay fans of this Just Blaze-produced story thought it would never actually get told. But thankfully Saigon came through with the near flawless debut that everyone was hoping for. Even though 3/4 of the album is almost five years old it proved timeless in subject matter and sound.

Pharoahe Monch-W.A.R. (We Are Renegades)

The Queens-bread lyricist and singer pulls out all of the stops on his third solo project giving fans the “rappity-rap” album they’ve been wanting from him since his 1999 debut Internal Affairs. Styles P, Royce Da 5’9, Jean Grae and Jill Scott complete this warning from the future.

Keep checking back to see who we add to this list throughout the year!

Rapper Saigon, p*ssed off an upcoming vixen, Taina when he called her a b*tch and a hoe after she wouldn’t let him “feel on her.” She says he is “A Disrespectful N*gga.” It all started when Saigon hit her up on Facebook eventually the two got together at the club Greenhouse. She says he bought her drinks from the bar and she couldn’t figure out why he wasn’t in V.I.P popping bottles, or why people weren’t showing him much respect. He offered her $500 to come back to his crib and she declined.

“What the f*ck imma do with $500? I cant even get me a pair of Louboutins on sale with that”

She goes on to say that Saigon continued to text her over and over after he dropped her off home.

Saigon has partnered with The Bowery Mission Homeless Shelter to help unfortunate New Yorkers during this year’s rough winter season. Earlier in the week, Saigon took to the streets of downtown Manhattan to hand out blankets to homeless people, in an attempt to keep them warm from the cold winter weather.

“Me and some friends of mine, the Ahuja’s that own a garment manufacturing company, took to the very cold streets of NYC over these past couple of nights to hand out warm blankets to help the homeless stay warm,” Saigon said in a press release. “We covered Port Authority, Penn Station and the Bowery Mission Homeless shelter handing out over a hundred blankets.”

According to Saigon, he’s handing out the blankets since he has some down time in between finishing recording his highly anticipated album The Greatest Story Never Told and gearing up to promote the release.

“I had a little down time after finishing up my album and my friends, the Aluhja’s, had some extra blankets so we decided to go hand them out to the homeless,” Saigon said. “If we can prevent one person from freezing to death out there on the streets, that makes everything worth it. I wish more hip-hop artists would step up and help give something back to their communities. If everyone used the power they have to lend a helping hand, hopefully it would inspire others to do the same.”

Dunn: “When I spoke to Saigon about premiering the new “REWIND” series, he chose to film “Together (Dear Black America)” as an introduction to the subject matter in “The Greatest Story Never Told” and because of its relevance to the album’s release this February for Black History Month.”

Surprise, surprise: Another rapper is pissed off at his record label! This time, it’s Lupe Fiasco. Though commentary from his former friend/producer Prolyfic and his Twitter beef with Eskay of Nahright are making Lupe look like more of a crybaby than rebel, we’re giving him the benefit of the doubt.

Lupe took to Twitter a couple weeks ago to announce that he’s handed his latest album, Lasers, over to Atlantic Records:

“Lasers is out of my hands guys and gals…it’s done and that’s all I can tell you…when they drop it…they drop it…so drop it…”

The announcement was enough to get a group of Lupe’s fans to start a petition last week asking for Atlantic to release the record. But haven’t we seen this dog and pony act before? Rappers have been battling their record labels for years now. To show you what we mean, we sat down and came up with a list of 10 rappers not named Lupe Fiasco who have gone through similar struggles. Feel their pain.

The Rapper: Clipse
The Label: Jive Records
The Politics: Pusha T and Malice of the Clipse actually started recording their sophomore album, Hell Hath No Fury, in late 2003. But thanks to a merger between their original label Arista Records and Jive Records, a slew of album delays, and a lawsuit which included the duo suing Jive for the right to leave the label, the album didn’t come out until November 2006. Like a fine wine, the project only got better with age (it eventually earned a “XXL” rating from XXL) but the long delay resulted in subpar album sales and Clipse left the label in early 2007.

Big up to Saigon. He's one of the few rappers I consider a friend. In this clip he talks about how in Hip Hop everybody always glamorizes crime, but nobody ever shows the consequences.

Happy Saturday. Here is some new clean your house music from Saigon produced by Just Blaze, "Gotta Believe It." Warning Shots 2 will be in stores Sept. 29th. I've been waiting for this Saigon album since I put him and Just Blaze on the cover of Scratch magazine a million years ago. Can't say I saw the T-Pain Red-5-using autotune-sounding-like T-Pain collab coming, but his lyrics are still on point. Let me know what you think.

Saigon has often been an outspoken emcee. Known just as much for his headline grabbing statements Read more..

Saigon has often been an outspoken emcee. Known just as much for his headline grabbing statements as he is for the music, the Brooklyn native is back on the scene after releasing All In A Day’s Work, a collaborative album with producer Statik Selektah.

In a forthcoming interview with BET.com, Saigon reflected on his time spent on a major label, rappers glorifying negative lifestyles, and his biggest industry regret.

Much has been written about Saigon’s relationship with his former recording house, Atlantic Records. One of the breaking points for Saigon came when a label executive suggested a collaboration with one of the label’s R&B acts.

“They wanted me to do a record with Pretty Ricky,” he says. “They were serious. One of the execs told me, ‘Saigon, it would be a good thing if you went in with Pretty Ricky. You guys could do something great.’ Saigon and Pretty Ricky? That doesn’t even make sense.”

Saigon also took some time out to address the glorification of violence and hustling in the industry.

“It’s stupid,” he said. “Real gangsters don’t do that. Tough guys don’t want you to know they’re tough. Everybody’s talking about street cred. Number one, when you’re out in the streets, you’re not thinking about street cred. It’s not something you sit around and glorify.”

“When gang members go to jail, they get caught up in the RICO laws [and they're surprised]. What’d you think? You’re running around with gang tattoos and a red bandana on your body. With organized crime, if they got pulled over, [they'd tell the police] ‘We’re not in the mob, what are you talking about?’ They didn’t walk around with signs that said ‘Gambino Family.’”

After leaving Atlantic Records rapper Saigon wasted no time in the promoting himself. Amalgam Digital (who just released the album Padded Room by his on again off again nemesis Joe Budden) will be dropping Sai’s album with Statik Selektah, All In A Day’s Work, which was recorded in 24 hours.

“This album, All In A Day’s Work is a bonafide Hip Hop classic created from beginning to end in 24 hours,” Saigon said in a press statement. “It is a definitely a spark in the right direction for the resurgence of east coast Hip Hop. I teamed up with producer Statik Selektah and Amalgam Digital, and we came together to present the world with the best album of the year 2009, aside from my debut of course, The Greatest Story Never Told, which will soon follow.”

“Joey spoke with HipHopGame about the Saigon battle and, contrary to what Sai claims, and in line with what Just Blaze said, he insists that the two of them spoke on the phone.

One minute we hear there’s a phone call and the next minute Saigon says it didn’t happen. Did a phone call happen? The phone call happened. The phone call happened. In my story the phone call happened. I’m not responsible for what he goes around saying but it’s common sense. If me and dude are engaged in a fucking lyrical battle here and all of a sudden I just stop out of the clear blue sky, there’s really no other reason for it besides there was a phone call that took place.

What did you guys talk about? That part I’m not going to share. But we had a pretty in-depth conversation. And it was a good one. It was a good conversation. It didn’t start out well but we had a good conversation. He begged me to stop. He begged me to leave him alone.

He goes on to say that he explained to Saigon during the call that the next round was going to get really personal and there wouldn’t be any coming back once that record hit the streets. Joey also says he’s down to jump in the ring and fight Sai for charity, and he speaks on his girlfriends newly found internet fame.”

Contrary to reports on Twitter that Just Blaze mediated the situation between Joe Budden and Saigon, XXLMag.com recently published a piece stating otherwise:

“With the net buzzing with reports that Saigon and Joe Budden have squashed their escalating beef, XXLmag.com got in touch with The Yardfather to find out the details. Problem is Sai says that never happened.

When asked to confirm whether or not he got on the phone with Budden, Sai denied everything that Just Blaze wrote on his twitter account last night. “Nah that’s what Just Blaze wants to happen in his heart,” he said. “I don’t know where he got that information from but that’s totally bullshit.“

In fact Sai thinks Blaze said that to cool things down. “I don’t know where that came from,” he explained. “For a while you know Just been trying to squash that shit cause he understands what it can turn in to. He just doesn’t wanna see it go past –you know just being around me and a lot of my people – and he doesn’t wanna see it go anywhere other than wax. And he knows that’s very, very, very likely gonna happen.”

As of press time Just Blaze has not returned any emails.

As XXL reported yesterday, Budden will be performing tonight at S.O.B.’s as a part of the newly formed supergroup Slaughterhouse. While Sai is cool with the rest of the crew, which consists of Joell Ortiz, Royce da 5’9” and Crooked I, he says he will not be going to the show. “There’s really no need to be there, “ he said. “I would love to see the show as a hip-hop fan – they all talented people – I wanna see what they can come up with, but with that other shit that’s not gonna happen.”

“We wanna see what Joey’s gonna do,” he added, “Cause he claims he’s gonna go there and do something. He’s gonna put his foot in my ass or whatever – so I don’t know where this phone shit came from.”

Sai announced on his last diss track “Pushin Buddens,” which was released earlier this week, that he’s done with adding fuel to the fire, but admitted to XXL that he will keep on putting out records if he has to. “To tell you the truth I don’t want to but you know know that shit is getting fun, ’cause I don’t really battle but it’s fun now – now i’ll come back 10 times stronger than I came,” he said about putting out another track. “So if his shit ain’t 10 times stronger that that ‘Pain in his Life‘ – which I know he can’t make a better record than that – if he can make a better record that than shit, he’s good, then I gotta step my shit up and do it again.”

Sai’s new mixtape, Warning Shots 2, is slated to hit the streets in April with production by Just Blaze, Scram Jones, Bucwild and himself.”

Stay tuned to The Urban Daily as more breaks with this story!
