“Pay attention” she demands, raising her voice slightly; I had gotten lost in her eyes. I stumbled over my words thinking ‘what was the answer to the question?…then again, what was the question?’ As she strut back to the drawing board I felt my chair jolt like I had stepped onto a space craft that transported me into another realm. Stacy and I are the only people in this space and she wants me just as much as desperately as I crave her!

“Come in” she whispers, motioning her index finger for me to enter. I stepped into her private office wide-eyed and ripe. She was barely dressed, the shirt on her back looked familiar–it was mine.

New documentary directed and produced by Bill Duke, D. Channsin Berry, and Urban Winter Entertainment titled, Black Is Beautiful: Dark Girls, a film based on color bias in and out of the African American community. Skin color has been a silent issue in the black community for a long time but people are starting to be more vocal about it in 2011. Last week the net was buzzing about Psychology Today posting the controversial article titled, “Why Are Black Women Less Physically Attractive Than Other Women?” I guess the best way to find out why would anyone think that is to hear it from people who experience it everyday. Unless that is the response you are looking for when people look at your modeling pictures, it’s time to clean up your act.

In the era of the urban model, the video girl, the “I have seen ass pics up on MySpace therefore I am a model” has gotten utterly out of control and embarrassing. Once upon a time it was an honor to have the title “model”, not so much anymore. Ethnic women get a bad rap, stereotyped and down right disrespected. We wonder why? No it’s not just because we are curvy and they are hating on us. And I’m tired of hearing  “white women can pose in Maxim and Sports Illustrated in swimsuits why can’t we do the same thing in our magazines?” Well ladies I will say it once as I’ve said a million times, presentation is everything, it’s not what you do but how you do it.

As the pioneer of the urban modeling game I will give you some guidelines to go by to know if you are putting yourself in the “it must be yo ass,cuz it’s not yo face” category.

1- If your ass is more prevalent in a photo than your face. This indicates that your ass is all that you feel you have to offer.

2-Never pose doggy style. Are you a dog? It’s ok to show off your curves and your nice buttocks but you should never pose doggy style in a picture. A nice side pose with your back curved in a S shape will show your curves without being distasteful.

3- Never, ever, ever under any circumstance should your butt crack be exposed to the camera. Crack kills!

4- The look on your face is worth a million bucks. There is no need to have the ”I’m having a orgasm” look on your face when posing in a bathing suit, the fact that you are in a bathing suit is sexy in it self. The look on your face should be pleasant or happy not sexual. Remember there is a difference in being sexy and sexual.

Now if you are into adult entertainment (i.e. escort service, prostitution, porn star etc) and are selling your body then disregard all of the above. However, if you are a model that wants to be taken seriously and would like to transcend beyond music videos and girlie magazines then I hope my tips have been helpful.

Remember: corporations do not and will not associate you with their product if your image is raunchy if you are unsure what raunchy is….. It looks like an ad for sex or porn, not beauty.

We can either work toward killing the stereotype together or feed the negativity with distasteful imagery.

The Urban Daily: Miss Clarissa… You’re looking good today! What got you interested in modeling?

Clarissa Santiago: Well, in 1996, I started of doing beauty pageants. I was competing for Miss Teen Puerto Rico and I won that, as well as the ‘Miss Photogenic’ award! After that, it was kind of just like, me beginning my modeling legacy.

TUD: There sure are a lot of pretty girls in New York – what makes you stand out amongst the rest of them?

CS: Well, I’m a businesswomen and I think that it’s that that makes me stand out amongst all these beautiful ladies out here. My approach and all that allows others to know that I’m very serious about this. Everything is all business for me and I try to think about how I can benefit from each move that I make in order to progress both professionally and financially.

TUD: The pictures you have in Skin Deep are kind of provocative. How do you think your folks feel about your nipples being all up on TheUrbanDaily.com?

CS: I think that the general consensus is kind of like, “You don’t got to do that, ma.” Or they’ll say stuff like, “Why you gotta take photos like that? You’re a really pretty girl, you don’t have to do that.” But what people don’t understand is that what I do is not out of desperation. What I do is out of love for what I do and for who I am! I’m a sexy woman who’s comfortable with her sexuality. I love taking sexy photos. I love seeing the images because that’s what it’s all about for me; I enjoy it because I know that you do. So, at the end of the day, what I need is for everyone to support what I’m doing ‘cause I’m happy doing it and that should be the most important thing anyone should want for me.

TUD: …Well, in one picture, you looked drenched…

CS: …Yeah…

TUD: So, then, what are your top five songs that get you wet?

CS: [Laughs] The top five songs that get me wet! Wow… that’s a really good question [laughs]. Damn, man… I can only think about my songs, right now. I can’t even think of anyone else’s… Hmm, songs that make me wet… “Slowly” by Tank does it. Or “Don’t Say No, Just Say Yes,” by Avant… I really like that song. I love Young Jeezy and T.I. – that hood shit gets me going, too! Someone just hipped me to Noel Gordine, so I’d want to get it poppin’ to something off of Noel Gordine’s album.

TUD: Most Puerto Rican girls are known to be sexual deviants…

CS: Is that right? [Laughs]

TUD: Yeah! And with this being New York and all – what are the top three places for out-of-towners to make whoopee at?

CS: It depends on what mood you’re in… If you’re in the mood to be really, really romantic, then you’d probably want to get something poppin’ in Central Park. If you want to be on the low-low, you could go in the cut in Harlem on 155th and Riverside Drive. There’s a little dark alleyway there. I shot a video there the other day and my mind started flooding up with ideas. If you’re in the mood to be just down-and-dirty, you could just go into any McDonald’s, go into the restroom and get it poppin’ [laughs]!

TUD: So, no New York taxicab confessions?

CS: No [laughs], not in New York. I don’t do that, nah… I have some Miami taxicab confessions, though [laughs]. But I can’t go into those [laughs].

TUD: Okay, okay, okay… Well, since you’re Puerto Rican and a beautiful lady – who did you want to be our president?

CS: I feel like the last two presidential elections we’ve had were sort of the same thing. I don’t feel that any of the candidates are really making me comfortable enough to where I could feasibly trust them with the country. Even though I think Obama is great for a number of reasons – he’s black, for one and him being the first black president would be amazing for the country, is two. With all these moves being made in politics, I’m still concerned about our freedom and how we, as women and minorities, have worked so hard to build this country up. Someone can come in and, possibly, shake the country up or take it in a negative direction and that’s scary to me. To know that you could still vote, but ultimately, you know it’s never going to get back to you is extremely scary! In the end, I’m definitely rooting for Obama, you know…? I think that he’s the best choice we have at the moment.

TUD: You’ve gotten a few looks online and here on the street… You’re probably used to all that now, but when has there been a time where you didn’t want anyone to notice you?

CS: I don’t know… [Laughs] I love attention! There’s never been a time where I didn’t want anyone to not look at me. I mean… we all have our days, you know…? I work in Times Square during the day, so, I’m always afraid of people seeing me and recognizing who I am. From the magazine spreads to this interview I did where I was talking some raunchy stuff, I’m still on my way to work and I don’t and can’t afford to get my spot blow, you know…? At the end of the day, though, this is me, this is what I do. It’s only a matter of time before I’m doing it all day, every day, all the time…

Thankfully she has come out of semi-retirement from the video/photo game (she’s appeared in Cam’rons “Hey Ma” and was in an ad for Coogi) to grace the Urban Daily. As for her current eating habits, read on to find out what she did with one lucky banana.

TUD: When did you start modeling?
Sharon: Around 2001. I got into modeling [through] my first video for Cam’ron when I was in college. I used to frequent this club in D.C. that used to be called Dream, now it’s called Love. My friends and I got approached by a casting director and she asked us to take some pictures and it was the first time we were ever exposed to any of this. The song was catchy but it wasn’t like a huge video. But I did get recognized around the way. That’s where I also met Chamille from America’s Next Top Model. That’s where I made my first connections. Then I started going to New York and castings and being exposed to [the business.] I graduated from U of Maryland College Park in ’03 and moved to New York in ’04.

TUD: Have you done any recent video work?
No, I was on the Nelly shoot but I’m not in the video. For the most part I don’t go to too many castings. I did a Coogi shoot. I want to do more fashion campaigns. Plus I’m a co-host with DJ Green Lantern so I try to limit the kinds of things that I do.

TUD: How did you make the transition from modeling to radio?
I started out on “Lip Service” on Shade 45. It was a late night show with two female hosts, Angela Yee and Leah Rose. I went on the show a few times as “the model” and they asked me to be an in-house guest. [Eventually] I got away from the talking raunchy and doing more interviews. One time Angela asked me if I could take her spot on the morning show because she had to go out of town. So I got a chance to co-host with Cypha Sounds and it was my first time on the radio and I did my best to imitate her. Several months later she called me and asked if I’d be interested in working with Green Lantern, he was looking for a co-host. I just feel privileged that she believed in me enough to recommend me to Green Lantern.

TUD: I remember getting a mixtape of that show, ya’ll got buckwild!
It was really crazy. My first time on the show we had a deepthroat contest with bananas. And I’m thinking it’s radio and nobody can see me. But you really don’t think how it can affect you. I won the contest …

TUD: Say word?…
But those things make you think. Girls get thirsty to get on the show and they wanna swallow things and show you they can put anal beads up their ass, that they can lactate from their breasts and not be pregnant. I’m more entertained by it than wanting to be that sexual person.

TUD: But you’ve got a body full of tats. How did you get the Dragon on your back?
I left church when I was 18 to get that tattoo. We were preparing for the Thanksgiving play and I left service to get it. I was so thirsty to show it off and they were like “you got shot in your back?” cuz I was bleeding through the paper. I wanted something on the Asian side cuz I’m not really deep into my roots so I just associated the dragon with Asian (culture). It looks like it’s catching a character, and the character means beauty. So the idea was “beauty is in the eye of the beholder.” On my Senior Trip to Cancun Mexico we went to get tattoos cuz no one’s parents were around. We watched them break the needles and all that. I got another little symbol that was supposed to be a Japanese character, but I found out after a bikini wax that it’s not, it was supposed to mean courage and it was a whopping ten dollars

TUD: Guess it really meant, “buyer beware…”

She discovered her love of dance at a tender age, dancing in a Spanish folk group with her sisters and making appearances at major festivals such as Calle 8 and Feria de la Alegria, and performing on Spanish-language variety show, “Sabado Gigante.” After a friend saw a television segment on Hispanic models, a dare led her to a model search where she was immediately handpicked by a director for a video he was shooting that same week.

Angelica, who earned her nickname “Curves” for her sexy curvaceous body, is sought out by renowned music video directors for her freestyle moves. Kelly, T.I. and Rick Ross (Director Malcom Jones), and in “Holla at Me Baby” which included Lil Wayne, Paul Wall, Fat Joe, Rick Ross and Pitbull (Director Malcom Jones). Additionally, she was in “Oye Mi Canto” featuring Nina Sky, N.O.R.E., Daddy Yankee and others (Director Gil Green), and also in Winsin y Yandel’s “Llame Para Verte.”

You may have also spotted Angelica’s fresh face online, in calendars and magazines such as Maxim, Smooth Girl Magazine (5-page spread), Blackmen’s Special Latina Edition Swimsuit Extra (4-page spread) and their 101 Sexiest Women, and also in Hip Hop Weekly. She also graced this year’s Seagram’s Liquor calendar and was also in the Sexy Girls of Miami calendar. Her most recent project Miami Spice Girls of Lowrider is in stores, and Lowrider is set to come out this month!

In addition to print work, she’s appeared on TV and film: “La Esquina” (MUN2), “The Last Hustle” (Intent Film Works) and Frequencia (Telemundo). She’s been a dancer on “The Source Awards,” modeled Levi’s on Telemundo’s live morning show, and also served as a past host of “The Beat Down Concert.”

Angelica is now looking to the future-a career in acting. She’s got her eye on movies, commercials and television shows, particularly a series or sitcom. Although busy with work, she also hopes to travel the globe and purchase land for her and her family. Angelica, who is of Colombian descent, was born in Chicago but raised in Miami, where she lives today.
