Baylor QB Robert Griffin Wins Heisman Trophy [VIDEO]

Last year Cam Newton won the Heisman Trophy and was drafted in the first round by the Carolina Panthers. This year Baylor University’s Quarterback Robert Griffin, III was honored with the 77th Heisman Trophy Award. This is the first time a player from that school has won a Heisman.

Griffin, III lead his school to a 9-3 record completing 72 percent of his passes for 3,998 yards with 36 touchdown passes and a nation-leading 192.3 efficiency rating.

NBA fans, the time is almost here. Basketball starts on Christmas Day and before the games begin, Lebron James sat down with Sports Center to reflect on his first season with the Miami Heat. For the most part of the season, Lebron was the NBA’s public enemy number one. After leaving the Cleveland Cavaliers by announcing his decision at an excruciatingly long press conference, he and the Heat didn’t live up to the hype.

In the interview, James makes claims to not have an ego and to have laughed off all the jokes his haters cracked about him. He also explains how he felt about the lockout. He says he cared more about the fans than himself during the lockout. When asked if he’s become a better player than he was last season, he responded, “We’ll see.” Yes we will, Lebron. Yes we will. Michael Jordan’s High School Girlfriend Threatens To Sue Over Stolen Love Letter

Micheal Jordan’s high school girlfriend, Laquette threatened to take legal action over stolen love letter that was auctioned off online. The letter of apology was written over 30 years ago by Michael Jordan during his advanced chemistry class. MJ apologizes for making Laquette look “pretty Rotten” and how he is still getting use to dating a girl so much smaller than him. According to the sports auction house lelands, the letter sold for over $5,000. Lequette was in shock when she saw the letter on TV last week and wants Michael Jordan to know she would never betray him like that. She suspects the letter was stolen and sold by a family member.

The insider claims Chris Bosh is furious and blames Lebron James and Dwyane Wade. Looks like we may get to see that ugly cry of Chris Bosh again real soon. According to TMZ, the police received a call about a drunk man wondering around the Grand Venetian apartment complex in Irving, TX last night. When the cops showed up, they found Deshawn Stevenson who said he was lost. Stevenson who does not live in the apartment complex failed a field sobriety test and was arrested for public intoxication. He was released this morning on $475 bond.

The UConn women’s basketball team’s impressive streak of 90 consecutive wins came to an end on Thursday night (Dec. 30th) with a 71-59 loss to Stanford. The Stanford women’s team is also the last team to beat UConn in the 2008 Final Four before the epic streak started. The UConn women just broke the longest streak in college basketball history on Dec.21st which was held by the UCLA men’s team from 1971-1974. The streak lasted over 900 days.

Coach Gino Auriema was in good spirits after the game joking “I’m tired of this losing stuff”.”

Congratulations to UConn on a great run.

Philadelphia Eagles Wide Receiver DeSean Jackson added insult to injury on this touch down run against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday night. He was penalized for excessive celebration as he fell backwards into the end zone.

Jackson finished the night with 210 receiving yards on just four catches in the 30 to 27 win. It was the third most receiving yards ever in one game for an Eagles receiver.

So I’ve been playing NBA 2K11 on the old Xbox 360 and to be honest with you, the game has lots of surprises. The predominant theme of the game centers around Michael Jordan mostly – and his career over the years. For me personally, this was the main reason to check the game out. It’s been so long since there was a true Jordan presence in any basketball game and to finally get one worth mentioning was definitely worth the 60 bucks. That’s not to say it was a perfect game however. But first lets take a look at the things it does well.

Signature Highlights

After your game you can take a look at the highlights of all the key players of the game by choice. It does so stylistically as well, and it really is a pleasure to see you dishing it out on opponents.

Game Reel

This is a collage of the different highlights of the game.

Press Book

I thought this was a cool addition. It takes snapshots of the game as well so you see key plays from a photojournalist’s point of view. Very similar to what you would see at NBA.com or ESPN.com when looking through pictures of a past game.

“My Jordans”

The game actually has you collecting Air Jordans throughout your career! Different Jordan’s give your player’s different abilities. There are 40 in all to collect.

Living Roster

To me this is one of the coolest aspects of the game. The living roster is just what it sounds like. Players and league stats are updated in almost real-time. I’m playing a season with the Knicks right now (hapless Knick fan – what can I say?) and the interface is giving me live info on what has transpired around the league. Injuries, trade rumors, scores…its all there.

Jordan Challenges

In my opinion, the second coolest aspect of the game. You get to relive all of the great Jordan moments like “the Shrug”, the 1991 NBA Finals, 69 points against the Cavaliers, and more. The game actually starts you off in Jordan’s shoes. If you are not used to the game – go ahead and exit and practice a little bit before you start playing in Jordan mode ’cause there is a lot to learn.

How it Comes Together

Why do I think the Living Roster is the coolest aspect of the game? Well its not new but it works really well this time because of the juxtaposition between the new teams and the old teams. You are solidly placed in the “here and now” because of the reference point of the old heads. The game never really feels stagnant and you aren’t stuck with buyers remorse because you just bought the game and someone got traded and now your game is out of date. I just played the Wizards and Gilbert Arenas was in the line-up. Not only that, but it also tells you about up coming games in much the same way you would see them broadcast on television.

Moving on to game-play, controlling your player is pretty easy and intuitive. You can also try your own skills with the “shot stick” (the right stick on the 360 controller). You can control how your player shoots based on your own preferences. If you get good at this – it definitely pays dividends. Everything is pretty much what you would expect up to a point. However, the more complex moves require a bit more finesse. Ball handling becomes a bit more complicated when trying to step in and do a turn move to lay-up or some other similar move. It’s not impossible, but I wonder what the the chances of executing that particular move every time you wanted would be. However, the move transitions were great, and I definitely got excited every time I pulled something off.

Each players’ real-time stats definitely meant something. I definitely felt it when a team was doing well, or doing poorly. This can be frustrating because a team that you feel you could normally beat all of a sudden becomes a challenge because they are on a real-life run. However, this is not a negative aspect because it ads to the overall realness of the game.

I also enjoyed the customization elements of the game. You can change shoe types and colors as well as appearances. I left most of it alone so that I would keep everyone’s appearances as close to their real-life counterparts as possible. However, the possibility is there.

You can also play different modes like blacktop pickup games, dunk contests, or three point shootouts. You can also team up with your friends online and start or join a “crew.” Announcer speech has been improved once again. They are generally interesting and at times I wonder if they are being updated in real time as well! The crowds have been re-worked so that they don’t look like the same 1 person duplicated 1,000 times. This time its the same 10 people duplicated 100 times each. Its not huge but its something. Plus the noise swells and decreases just like a real game depending on who is winning.

What I Didn’t Like

In an effort to make movement more lifelike, I feel like the designers went a little overboard with the player’s physics when it came to momentum. When you reach, be careful because you may end up near the half-court line for simply trying to swipe the ball. Of course that’s an exaggeration, but you get the point. Also, passing can be inaccurate and turnovers can get ridiculous. Some people will say you need to protect the ball more, but it can really get frustrating. A lot of the game is spent either stealing the ball or getting it stolen simply because passing is so inaccurate. Some reprieve is that you generally won’t find yourself passing it to a player who is out of bounds. I am so glad they fixed that issue, or play could have been unbearable.

I also wasn’t immediately wowed by the graphics this time. Not saying graphics are atrocious but I felt like no huge strides were made between 2K10 and 2K11 in terms of realistic facial expressions and jersey movements. There are some weird moments where your jersey is shaking all over the place while the player is standing still or when your clothes and body are indistinguishable. However, these issues are few and far in between and certainly don’t detract too much from what does make this game so awesome.

Wrap-up

A solid game and must-have for a Jordan admirer. The Jordan presence alone makes it worth it. The other stuff is bonus! Real-time stats and as much customization as you can stand and there really isn’t too much to shake a finger at with this game. The transition between simulated games and real-life games are almost seamless. Playing 2K11 makes you more interested in real games and real games makes you interested in playing 2K11. If that was the intention, well played sirs…well played.

Offense – Isiah Thomas, former coach of the New York Knicks, also played basketball a couple of decades ago. During his basketball days, he and his Pistons were the punching bag of choice for Larry Bird and his Celtics. After the Celts eliminated Thomas and his Bad Boys from the 1987 playoffs, the point guard went all reverse racist-y on us and said that Larry Bird was “meh” and only considered great because he’s white. We disagree: he’s great because he stole a horrible inbounds pass during the playoffs, homie. Don’t worry, though. Bird got his revenge later when he took over the Pacers and promptly fired Thomas from his head coaching position.

It’s official: Michael Vick’s back, y’all.

After dazzling performances in Week 1 and Week 2 of the young NFL season, the Philadelphia Eagles quarterback got the nod Sunday ahead of Kevin Kolb, who was inked in as the No. 1 QB at the beginning of the year.

The resurgent Vick delivered under the pressure and bright lights in yesterday’s game against the Jacksonsville Jaguars. The three- time All-Pro quarterback went 17-for-31 for 291 yards and 3 TDs in the Eagles’ romp in Jacksonsville.

After serving a 23-month federal sentence for his role in an illegal dog fighting ring, most thought Vick would never return to his electrifying self on the Gridiron after he was released from federal prison in March 2009. Through three games, Vick’s proved the haters wrong and if he keeps it popping this NFL season he appears on the verge of perhaps completing the biggest comeback story in pro football history.

However, Vick’s not the only former sports superstar to surprisingly regain his glory and old form after missing significant action during their beloved careers. Here are four other big comeback stories in professional sports throughout the years. Please enjoy and drop a comment.

Mike Tyson (boxing). After serving three years for raping beauty contestant Desiree Washington, Iron Mike initially came back knocking out dudes. He first beat Peter McNeely by disqualification (Round 1), then KO’d Buster Mathis, Jr. (Round 3), then KO’d Frank Bruno (Round 3) to win the WBA heavyweight championship, then KO’d Bruce Sheldon (Round 1) for the WBC title. And then … he met Evander Holyfield.

Ted Williams (baseball). This is my oldie but goodie on my list. Not once, but twice one of the best sluggers in baseball history left the sport to serve in the U.S. military as a Marine pilot. Williams, a two-time American League MVP, snagged his second Triple Crown in 1947, one year after serving three years in War World II. Then in ’58, five years after serving 15 months in Korea, the “old man” led the league in hitting (.328 average) at the age of 40.

Michael Jordan (basketball). To the astonishment of NBA fans, No. 23 bounced from the game on Oct. 6, 1993. But he gloriously returned on March 18, 1995. It took a quarter- of-a season and summer break for the five-time league MVP to regain his full magic, but once he got it back he torched the league and led the Chicago Bulls to its second three-peat of NBA titles (1996, 1997 and 1998). M.J. was great before that comeback, but he became the NBA’s greatest after it.

Muhammad Ali (boxing). “I got nothing against no Viet Cong,” Muhammad Ali said notably about the possibility of him fighting in the Vietnam War in the 1960s. “The Greatest” was bold for standing strong for his beliefs, but he was stripped of his license and couldn’t box for over three years. Once reinstated, he beat down heavyweight bruisers like Ken Norton and Joe Frazier and eventually capped things off by KO’ing George Foreman in the historic, thrilling “Rumble In The Jungle” in 1974 to regain his world championship belt.

Athletes are good at a lot of things. Running, jumping, swimming, dribbling, passing, dunking… but the one area where they don’t particularly excel? Staying out of trouble. So theBVX made a list we know can help.

Seriously, there’s not a week passes that someone in the MLB, NBA, NFL, NHL, or some other pro sports organization isn’t getting into trouble for something. Most recently, NFL quarterback JaMarcus Russell got arrested for possession of codeine syrup after police conducted a small raid on his home in Mobile, Alabama on Monday night. It’s just the latest thing that could jeopardize Russell’s once-promising career.

With all of that in mind, theBVX wants to help athletes stay out of trouble. So we put together a list of 10 rules that every athlete needs to know. Follow all of them and we guarantee that your mug shot won’t be the first thing people see on your Wikipedia page. Are you game?

Rule No. 1: Stay. Out. Of. The. Strip. Club.

The Reason: Did you know that, as a professional athlete, you’re 78 percent less likely to get arrested on any given night if you’re not at a strip club? Okay, so we made that up. But we’re pretty sure one like it does exist. Think about everything that could go wrong at a strip club; fights, assaults, shoot-outs. And that’s for people who aren’t rich. Stay out of the strip club and you’ll guaranteed to dodge these mishaps. Plain. And. Simple.

Rule No. 2: Don’t get married… until after you retire!
The Offenders: Tiger Woods, Kobe Bryant, Shaquille O’Neal
The Reason: As a pro athlete, you’re gonna spend days, weeks, months, even years at a time on the road. So while you might love your wife and think about her every time “Best I Ever Had” comes on, there’ll be a point when that love is tested. And if you’re not gonna see your wife much anyway, what’s the point of getting married? Skip the future alimony hearings, keep your money and wait until you’re done playing (both on and off the court) to settle down.

Rule No. 3: Unless you’re having sex — don’t stay strapped.
The Offenders: Gilbert Arenas, Plaxico Burress, Shaun Rodgers
The Reason: What is so hard about this, fellas? Guns are only going to get you into trouble. We understand that you are a target now that you’re making millions of dollars — but you’re also gonna be a target in prison if you get caught packing. Not guns on the inside homie. Stick to staying strapped in the bedroom, not the club. Word to Weezy.

VIDEO: Marion Jones Lies To Her Child About Going To Jail

In On October 5, 2007, former track start Marion Jones pled guilty to lying to federal agents in the BALCO steroid investigation. She served six months in prison in 2008 and as part of her community service she speaks to children across the country, but her own children still don’t know about her prison bid.

“We’ll decide when we think they’re ready,” Jones, who now plays in the WNBA, told ABC. “I want to be a living example to my kids. When you make mistakes come tell us, accept the consequences and move on. When I share my story they’ll be ‘oh my gosh’ but when they see that I’ve confronted it they’ll say ‘we’re proud of you mama.’”

Jones has three children ages 6, 2 and 10 months.

Months ago, Lil Wayne expressed his hope that he’d be able to keep up with sports while serving his yearlong prison sentence at Rikers Island. Apparently, the wish of Birdman Jr. — who actually has a tattoo of the ESPN logo — has been fulfilled. On Wednesday (April 14), Wayne updated his new blog, WeezyThanxYou.com, with his latest observations.

First up, Wayne says he thinks the Philadelphia Eagles dropped the ball by trading star QB Donovan McNabb to division rivals the Washington Redskins.

Tracy McGrady Traded To Knicks In 3-Team Deal

Tracy McGrady is heading to the New York Knicks, who now have more than $9 million of additional salary cap space to use in free agency this summer.

Sources told ESPN.com that the Houston Rockets, Sacramento Kings and New York Knicks have agreed to terms that will expand the Houston-Sacramento deal into a three-way trade.

The Knicks will acquire McGrady and Sergio Rodriguez from Sacramento; the Rockets get Kevin Martin and Hilton Armstrong from Sacramento, and Jordan Hill and Jared Jeffries from New York. Watch the video for more analysis and updates.

On February 13, 1923 The New York Renaissance became the first Black Professional Basketball team.

The New York Rens began as the Spartan Braves of Brooklyn, then became the Spartan Five and finally in 1923 emerged as the Renaissance, named after the famed Renaissance Ballroom on 138th Street and Seventh Avenue in Harlem. The Rens, as they were commonly called, were one of the most-watched traveling teams of the barnstorming era. Fans would fill auditoriums to root against them, often insult them and sometimes spit on them.

When the games were finished, their postgame meal often was eaten on the team’s bus because many dining establishments refused to serve them. All because they were African- Americans.

Many claimed that they were the best basketball team of their day. But they were hardly America’s darlings.

Founded by Robert J. Douglas, who is now referred to as the father of black basketball, the Rens were the first full-salaried black professional basketball team, and games against them became sure money-makers. Contests with the Rens were so lucrative that their archrivals — the all-white Original Celtics — refused to join the American Basketball League in 1925, in part because the league did not invite the black club to join.

NFL Wide Receivers Catching Hell Instead Of Passes

According to the Associated Press San Diego Chargers wide receiver Vincent Jackson was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of drunken driving.

Jackson failed sobriety tests shortly after 2 a.m. on state Route 52 in San Diego, said California Highway Patrol Officer Ray Scheidnes. He said he didn’t know Jackson’s blood alcohol level.

An officer stopped Jackson after spotting the player braking abruptly, speeding and weaving in a 2008 GMC Sierra, said Highway Patrol Officer Brad Baehr. Jackson was on probation for a previous DUI arrest, he said.

The player was taken to the San Diego County jail and released.

Chargers general manager A.J. Smith said he was aware of Jackson’s “off-the-field issue.”

“Obviously we’re disappointed,” Smith said. “We take these issues very seriously. Moving forward, we will monitor the situation and have no further comment.”

Jackson, in a brief statement released through the team, said he didn’t think charges would be filed against him.

“In the event they are, I look forward to clearing my name and proving my innocence,” he said.

In other NFL drama a gun owned by Indianopolis Colts Wide Receiver Marvin Harrison was used in an April shooting, but investigators still can’t determine who pulled the trigger, the city’s chief prosecutor said Tuesday.

Five of the six bullet casings found at the North Philadelphia shooting scene came from Harrison’s weapon, but investigators have conflicting witness accounts of who fired it, Philadelphia District Attorney Lynne Abraham said.

No charges have been filed in the April 28 shooting and the investigation remains open.

Dominican Slugger Wins NL MVP Award

Dominican slugger Albert Pujols of the St. Louis Cardinals won his second Major League Baseball National League Most Valuable Player award on Monday.

Pujols, 28, also won the award in 2005 and became the 11th player to claim multiple MVP honors, joining such legends as Barry Bonds, Willie Mays, Johnny Bench and Stan Musial.

The first baseman received 18 first-place votes from a US media panel for 369 total points to 12 first-place votes and 308 total points for runner-up Ryan Howard of the World Series champion Philadelphia Phillies.

Pujols struggled with an injured elbow that needed surgery after the season but batted .357 with 37 home runs and drove in 116 runs, helping the Cardinals to fourth in the NL Central division with an 86-76 record.

Philadelphia first baseman Howard edged Pujols to win the 2006 award.
