When Steve Harvey published his relationship book “Act Like A Lady, Think Like A Man” men everywhere gave him the collective side-eye. After becoming a best-seller the book has now been turned into a movie starring Kevin Hart, Michael Ely, Tariji P. Henson, Meagan Good, Gabrielle Union, Terrence J and many more.

Harvey disclosed the information after reading a letter on the air which questioned him about whether he would be continuing his syndicated radio show. Rumors have been circulating that he would be stepping down from his show.Steve’s response to leaving his radio show:

“This is my Jamaican background,”Harvey bantered. “I don’t quit no job. No, sir. That’s not me.”

The tickets prices for the Hoodie Awards probably increased by 500% since Harvey’s announcement. We wonder what else Steve Harvey will do, now that he doesn’t have to worry about doing stand up routines.

GQ: You were a rapper at one point, too. Was there a time when being an MC seemed more likely for you than being a singer?
Erykah Badu: That was back when I was in college. I went to [Grambling State] university from 1989 to ’93 to study theater, so I was an actor at that point. It wasn’t my aspiration to be a singer, it was to be an artist. When I was 23 or 24, I was rapping and emceeing a lot with Free, but I was also working at Steve Harvey’s comedy house. He was my boss—the best boss ever. Funny, generous, considerate, and he knew I was an artist. When I started working there I was a waitress, and somehow I became a hostess. When he knew he could trust me, he moved me to the ticket booth. I handled money and helped organize transportation and hotel reservations for the comedians that came in. I noticed Steve didn’t have a stage manager, so I got that job, making sure everybody was taken care of. I love being of service to people—the whole act of it is really great to me. One day Steve was late going onstage, so I went out to the mic and threw out some jokes and stuff. People were laughing and heckling and having fun and Steve came onstage and scolded me in front of everybody. It was so funny. We started doing it every night. [Laughs] It felt like, This is where I want to be. Steve was really inspirational in that.

GQ Magazine Goes In On Chris Brown

I’m referring to Rob Hardy and Will Packer of Atlanta, GA-based Rainforest Films. These two gentlemen have been at this for over a decade, earning the attention and respect of studio executives who believe in their ability to deliver box office gold – especially when compared to budget. And with each outing they continue to demonstrate that they are a duo not to be ignored, seemingly growing into a similar pair of superstar producer pants the Weinstein brothers have worn for years now.

I had the pleasure of interviewing Hardy and Packer recently, and found them both to be as astute, ambitious, and just down-to-earth as I’ve come to see them as, though from a distance. So my conversation with them was greatly appreciated.

And without further ado, here’s what I’d call the meat of the conversation.

- On whether they consider themselves a film studio/production company/or whether it matters:

We consider ourselves a film production company that is diverse in what we do, whether it’s film, television, commercials, documentaries; as long as it’s mass media and content, we want to be producers and distributors of it.

- On finding projects to produce:

We have a really strong internal development process, that is collaborative between ourselves and our team at Rainforest, and it’s been like that from the beginning. One of the things we pride ourselves on is keeping our fingers on the pulse of real people, what their interests and tastes are, which helps make our projects viable. And as we broaden and mature as filmmakers, we also have our eyes towards critical acclaim, and success with our films; we’re very aggressive about internally developing our own projects. We’ve taken projects that were brought to us by others – TAKERS & OBSESSED, for example. And turned those into successful motion pictures. We are always looking for new content and material, though not always unsolicited.

- On deciding to adapt Steve Harvey’s bestseller:

That came as a result of being aware of the book, having read the book and being around a lot of people who were talking about the book; we thought it’d be a great idea, and then tried to position ourselves so that we could obtain the rights to the book; we met with Steve and talked to him, and got the rights; and then we met and talked with Screen Gems on how we could successfully bring something like that to life.

- On their involvement in the distribution process after a film is produced, now that they’re playing at the studio level:

We’re very active, involved and hands on. And that is borne of the fact that we initially distributed our own projects, like when we first came out with our early films like CHOCOLATE CITY and TROIS. We produced those films, marketed and distributed them. So, in forming relationships with studios, we don’t just hand over the films to them after they are made and wish them luck, because that’s akin to raising a child and then just giving them away, and not making sure that they’re OK. For us, we’re very involved with the marketing, and all the creative choices made, everything from ads to radio spots; that’s all definitely a part of the process of being complete filmmakers. Now, we’re able to do that because we’ve had success independently, and we’ve had success with the studios. That’s not always an option for independent producers, to have input on the marketing of their films. But we are very, very, VERY involved with the marketing of our films and wouldn’t have it any of other way.

- On whether it’s still a struggle to get projects off the ground at the studio level, despite their successes:

Regardless of who you are, it’s hard to get projects developed in Hollywood in general; but, the good thing is that, because we have a proven track record in the business, it’s not difficult for us to get meetings, and it’s not difficult to get talent excited about working with us. And all that makes the process a lot easier.

- On the belief that Black films don’t sell in foreign markets:

It’s a combo of factors. It’s a reality. It’s a challenge. It becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy though. When you say something long enough, then it becomes true. And when you don’t have enough people that are working to change it, people meeting foreign agents to push these films and allow them to sell in these foreign markets, it becomes self-fulfilling. So that’s definitely another frontier, another challenge that we have to find a way, not just Rainforest, but African American filmmakers, and people who produce African American content; because when we block off the rest of the world, you are extremely limiting what your profit potential is for the film. And once you do that to your profit margin, it affects everything else – your budget for the film, your marketing budget, and your ability to produce that type of content.

- On plans to be completely autonomous:

Absolutely! We want to be able to put ourselves in a position to do more projects and have more say over what we do and how fast we do it; I think that’s the end goal for all story tellers, and the same is true for us.

- On projects on the horizon, in addition to Bounce TV:

We’ve got a really, really great slate of upcoming projects on the both the feature film and the television side; several of them have deals that are still pending and aren’t closed yet; but we can tell you that we’re working on projects in a variety of genres, from thrillers, to comedy, to horror, and we will very surely be able to realize some of those. But it’s exciting; we are continuing to evolve as filmmakers, and we are very glad to have enjoyed the success we’ve had, and we want to be able to continue to build upon that, and not only for the Rainforest brand, but also to bring other up and coming filmmakers into the fold.

- On general thoughts on the state of the business – shifting market trends, old models dying, proliferation of web based content:

Absolutely; We have to keep abreast of consumer viewing habits, attitudes and perspectives; and Hollywood, and the industry as a whole is very reactive, but we have to be proactive. We have to be ahead of the curve; And of the types of films we’ve had success with, one of the things that is challenging is the fact that the DVD market is down from where it was 3 or 4 years ago; so the way that affects us is that because there’s already a challenge with the foreign market place, and films that highlight African American stories, and also now that DVD is another ancillary revenue stream that’s been slashed, we have to find new ways for consumers who enjoy our content to find that content, and be able to monetize our interests in those films; For a long time, DVD was a life-preserver for African American-themed films, because African Americans over-index on home entertainment. And now that those numbers are down, we have to find new ways to manage the budgets of our films, and find other ancillary revenue streams.

- Predictions on what the industry will look like in 5 to 10 years:

If we knew that, then we’d be able to capitalize and monetize that to our benefit. There are some trends from 10 years ago that you saw coming, and some that you didn’t. But obviously the web, the immediacy of content, the immediate availability of content to consumers, whether at home, or mobile devices, or other devices, I think we’ll see more of that. The traditional methods will definitely be different and changed. You’ve got companies like Netflix and Google jumping into VOD, and I think you’d see more of that, and in much shorter windows. I think theatrical exhibition will still be there, since it’s the premium way for audiences to see movies. So it will survive but different.

Also, you’ll see start to see a variety of different kinds of filmmakers. As the technology advances and the cost of making and distributing films decreases, you’ll have a whole lot of different types of stories being told, which will shake up the way the industry goes, whether it’s feature film or network TV, because it’s going to dictate that things get done cheaper and faster.

- Any final thoughts or words of wisdom:

Filmmakers are encouraged to, by any means necessary, pursue your dreams, tell your stories. Start somewhere. The technology is there, the distribution avenues are there. It’s just the authenticity of your experience in your work that needs to come through.

And that’s about it!

At the moment, they are buried in production for Think Like A Man which is due in theaters some time in 2012. I’ll be looking forward to what’s next.

“The entire Republican Party needs a whopping because they know what’s right and what needs to be done in this country. But it’s a black man who’s trying to make it right. That is the main reason Republicans are going against it. None of the Republicans want to step out on their own and say, “Hey, this is wrong. We should be doing it like this. Obama is absolutely right.” They can’t step out like that because if they do, they are on their own. When you step out on your own in politics, you sink and fall. Those who oppose Obama’s ideas because he’s black need one and those who won’t step up and tell the others they’re wrong need to get one too!”

5. Eddie Long

“I ain’t even got to tell you Eddie Long needs his ass whooped! He needs to be whooped on three, four, five different occasions. First off, those muscle shirts. There ain’t a preacher yet I’ve seen in the pulpit preaching in a muscle shirt. Then, he has his wig cocked to the side. That’s another sign he needs his ass whooped. All of these boys came forward and accused him of doing nasty things to them and we decided we weren’t going to be judgmental. Eddie Long settled out of court for 20 something million dollars. Negro, what?! 20 something million sounds like the damn truth to me!”

Steve’s lawyer, Bobbie Edmonds, released a statement outlining how a Texas court now views seven accusations Mary levied against her ex-husband.

(1) Mary Harvey was not homeless or evicted from her home and was awarded 3 homes in the property settlement;

(2) Steve Harvey did not take, withhold or turn the child against Mary;

(3) Mary Harvey willingly placed the child on an airplane and sent him to Mr.Harvey without his knowledge;

(4) Steve Harvey has primary custody of the 13-year-old child;

(5) Steve Harvey did not take Mary Harvey’s wealth. Mary recieved $40,000 per month from 2005 – 2009;

(6) Mary Harvey recieved $1.5 million from Steve in March 2009;

(7) The divorce was granted on irreconcilable differences and current wife was not apart of the original divorce proceeding, nor was she the cause of the marital break-up.

Mary only stayed with Steve to salvage their relationship.

In Mary’s second interview she goes on to state that Steve Harvey left her with nothing, never showed up to any of the divorce hearings, turned her son Wynton against her and moved in with Marjorie in a disturbingly quick fashion.

Since then, Mary has been evicted out of their home and is now being sued. She claims that Steve lied under oath when he said that he built his empire by himself.

Mary is coming out now, because her name has been dragged through the mud and her name is constantly brought up in interviews.

Calling the book, “Sharp Advice For Women” Fletcher is placing his thirty years of experience doing hair for both men and women to give ladies unbiased advice on how to approach their relationships. TheUrbandaily.com spoke with Mr. Fletcher and asked him some frank questions about the challenges of relationships for this generation of couples.

TUD: Steve Harvey has been divorced and Karrine Steffans can’t keep a man but they are both writing books on how to get a man. What makes you qualified to write a relationship book?

Barry Fletcher: [laughs]I want people to realize there’s a difference between my views and Steve Harvey’s views. I think his book was written in a more repentant way because of all the bad he’s caused women all the years. So he does a nice, warm fuzzy rendition of a book that would make women happy to read. I try to save women from getting their heart broken. Trying to do someone’s hair when they’re heartbroken is not a good thing.

I think people sometimes don’t believe the power of a straight male hairdresser in the community when you’re dealing with women and men. I was a master barber first. I work with the most devious part of a woman’s personality. When you start to manipulate one’s vanity, ego and image women confide in me when I get it right. My relationships go back 30 years from which I’ve been doing hair. I started off as a barber and men would do the same thing, telling me all the woes of their relationships. They tell me the truth because they have nothing to gain by misleading me. I found myself advising both men and women. I think women and men should get advice on the opposite sex from the opposite sex. I consider myself a community psychologist because I take it all in and I try to offer some experience from trial and error. After 30 years of that I start to learn and understand a lot more, especially the subconscious thoughts of men. They’d rather tell their boys than give it straight to their women.

You’ve never been married and have no children. What are your thoughts on marriage?

I’m really wondering these days if marriage is really significant. I know it was if you go back two generations, but now if I had an 18 year old daughter I wouldn’t be encouraging her to find her Prince Charming, get married and have 2.3 kids. I think young ladies these days need to get out of a man’s ear and be more concerned with their careers. What usually happens is they end up having to take care of the same clueless young man they aspired to marry.

Ouch…

Commitment has different meanings for women and men. With women it means security, freedom, loyalty, permanent or forever. With men it means he has to expose his vulnerable side. It means he loses his freedom and his ability to make decisions for himself. I can help them out a little more in my book. I don’t try to be a philosopher too much but give them straight information.

Can you give me an example?

I talk about dating “potential.” A lot of women go after the same ten percent of men who are successful and good looking that have the house and cars. But they need to learn to date potential like Michelle Obama did. He drove a hooptie when they were in college. She could see what was going on with him and she learned his heart. One of the chapters is “How to learn a man’s heart.” Find out what’s dear to his heart. What are his pet projects? What does he spend his time on? If you really know the man you should know this. The best way to keep a man hooked on you is to help him with the things that are dear to his heart. You’ll cement a spot in his heart. The relationship isn’t all about you. It’s interdependent.

What are some things that drive men away from a woman?

A man wants a woman who is devoted to him enough to allow him his freedom. If you look at any marriage that has gone on 50 years or more, it’s the freedom factor involved. Sometimes women have a need for ownership in a relationship. They like to say “this is my man”. They don’t trust the man outside of their ability to monitor him. The other thing is understanding what sparks a flame in a man. They lose track of what keeps a man motivated. They have to work on this one word, Anticipation. Men want a surprise in life, especially when it comes to their woman. Sometimes the way a woman comes out of the bathroom to come to bed they look the same way. Anticipation is so important to men, that’s why we’re crazy about sports. We can’t wait to see what John Wall will do on the court. Women got to keep us fired up the same way. Anticipation is key to longevity in the relationship.

The radio and TV personality announced on his morning show that he will be trying the Martha’s Vineyard Diet Detox and try to shed 21 pounds in 21 days.

Starting in the fall, actor, comedian and radio personality Steve Harvey will take over hosting duties of the long-running game show “Family Feud.”

Series producer FremantleMedia North America said comedian Steve Harvey will take over as host from John O’Hurley when the syndicated show begins its new season next fall. The company said Harvey was chosen for his ability to connect with viewers and his “one-of-a-kind” personality.

Harvey’s TV credits include “Me and the Boys” and “The Steve Harvey Show,” and he was part of the “Kings of Comedy” standup tour and DVD. He hosts a nationally syndicated radio program.

I personally can’t wait to see how Steve Harvey and his massive collection of suits will handle the hosting duties.  His distinct southern accent yelling out “Survey Says!” may well be the highlight of the year.

However, I think there may have been a few better choices to host the show…

Several of Eminem’s notable costumes went up for bid yesterday (July 27) online for The Rock and Roll Pop Art Auction.

Included in the list of items donated by Shady is a white suit jacket splattered with blood, which was made by Lucelli. Eminem wore it for a photo shoot for his 2004 release Encore.

For $1,000, a fan can take home one of the rapper’s black Nike Air sweatsuits; but perhaps the prize of the auction is the Michael Jackson costume Eminem wore in the hotly-debated video for “Just Lose It.” The video and song caused quite a stir, as Michael Jackson complained about the video while calling into the Steve Harvey radio show. “Eminem has lost his ghetto pass,” said Harvey at the time. “We want the pass back.” In addition, BET eventually banned the video.

The Michael Jackson outfit, which includes a red sequined jacket, white glove and black hat, pants and shoes will starts at $6,000.

Tom Joyner’s weekday morning radio show, themed “The Party with the Purpose,” will begin airing in Chicago again after it was dumped last month from 102.7 WVAZ-FM and replaced by Steve Harvey’s morning program.

TJMS will broadcast on SOUL 106.3FM beginning tomorrow (April 22) from 5 a.m. to 9 a.m. weekdays, while the weekend program, “Right Back At Cha,” will be heard on Saturdays from 9 a.m. -11 a.m.

Clear Channel Chicago is bouncing Tom Joyner’s syndicated morning show after 13 years on WVAZ-FM 102.7, moving “The Steve Harvey Morning Show” from WGCI-FM 107.5 to replace it beginning Tuesday.

Harvey will simulcast on both stations until March 31. Clear Channel did not say Monday what its plans are after that for WGCI-FM. Any change occurring on April 1 risks being interpreted as an April Fool’s Day prank.

“Tom Joyner has been a great partner with V103 for the past 13 years, making it difficult to part ways,” WVAZ-FM program director Derrick Brown said. “We appreciate all Tom’s hard work and wish him continued success.”

WGCI-FM has aired this incarnation of Harvey’s syndicated show since 2007. But he has deep roots in the Chicago market, beginning his radio career in 1996 at WGCI-FM as a replacement for Joyner, whose decades-long connection began when legendary local radio executive Marv Dyson hired him at Johnson Publishing’s WJPC.

Steve Harvey, author of the relationship book “Think Like a Man, Act Like a Lady,” sat down with Essence.com to discuss the reported reconciliation of Chris Brown and Rihanna, despite allegations that he abused her.

ESSENCE.COM: You’ve been extremely vocal about the Rihanna and Chris Brown debacle on your syndicated radio show. If you could say anything to Chris Brown, what would you say?

HARVEY: First to Chris, any young man or my sons, I’d say there is no reason to ever put your hands on a woman. Unless you’re defending yourself because your life is in jeopardy—like a guy who called my show and told me his girl stabbed him, then okay, I believe you have a right to defend yourself if you’re under attack that could possibly be fatal.

ESSENCE.COM: Court documents allege Rihanna began hitting Chris Brown first while he was driving, so some might argue that his life was in jeopardy and he could have lost control of the car. Do you think he had a right to defend himself if this is indeed true?

HARVEY: It’s not right for a woman to ever put her hands on a man either, because that way she doesn’t provoke him. But I tell my daughters all the time, “Everybody don’t have a daddy like me.” The first day I meet any young man or boy who dates one of my three daughters (my twins are 26 and I have one who attends Spelman who is 21) I tell them: “You can talk to my daughter, yell at her, break up with her, have a falling out with her, tell her you never want to see her again, but if you ever put your hands on her I’m putting my hands on you and you’re not going to win and you better be looking over your shoulder because there’s not a place in this g*****n country where you could hide. I really don’t understand how Rihanna’s father can respond the way he has, because if you touch one of my daughters, I’m whooping you’re a**, period.

ESSENCE.COM: Incredibly there have been debates that suggest she brought this on herself and deserved what happened to her. What do you think?

HARVEY: People keep asking, “What did Rihanna do?” She didn’t do anything to deserve the picture I saw. I would advise Rihanna to slow down and get her life together and do her. She needs to really step back and evaluate this situation and most importantly, not take any of the blame for what happened and allow herself to think she had a reason for being beat in that way.

Steve Harvey is still trying to figure out how he ended up in a “battle” with fellow comic Katt Williams.

Both shared a New Year’s Eve bill in Detroit that was preceded by a week full of insults that Williams directed toward Harvey. The vitriol continued on stage as Williams, who followed Harvey in the New Year’s Eve lineup, insulted everything from Harvey’s physical appearance to his talent as a comic.

“He went up there for 40 minutes and not only talked about me, but Jamie Foxx and a couple of other people,” Harvey told EUR’s Lee Bailey. “It was just a really, really disrespectful show. If you say you’re funnier than me, prove it. …But don’t disrespect me man, and go up there in real negative overtones and slam me on stage.”

“I just left after about 5 minutes of sitting in my dressing room. And of course I got the reports of what all got said, but he’s never said anything to me. And now he’s doing more interviews saying that all of this was my idea. Well that’s amazing.”

A new standup comic beef has emerged between Katt Williams and Steve Harvey – mostly on Williams’ part – that is expected to be settled during a head-to-head battle on New Year’s Eve in Detroit.

Instigating from the sideline is fellow comic Jamie Foxx, who joined co-hosts of his Sirius XM FoxxHole radio show on Dec. 19 to comment on the absurdity of Williams calling out Harvey in advance of their Dec. 31 show.

First, Foxx plays a clip of Williams dissing Harvey. “I wanna apologize for what’s gonna happen,” Williams said of the joint comedy gig. “But the second that you get on stage, I need you to understand that that’s your final time as the ‘King of Comedy.’ Water seeks its own level, you can’t stop it playboy. It is what it is, so I hope you’re ready. I hope you got a team of writers. You gonna need about six or seven of ‘em….”

Steve Harvey then calls in and says he’s baffled by the whole thing. “I’ve always been cool with Katt. He said in an interview that back in LA, I didn’t know who he was,” Harvey told Foxx and crew. “I mean understand, I didn’t know who he was when I was on the radio in LA. He hadn’t been in any movies or anything, and the brother was just not that known. He was talking about me in the clubs, and I just asked on the radio, whoever Katt Williams is, to call me.”

“He called me, we straightened it out. We became friends. We’ve been cool ever since, so I thought.”

This oldie, but goodie is one to still chuckle at as Vegas representer, Ne-Yo, and his group N-V perform for Steve Harvey at the famed Apollo Theater in New York.

Cedric the Entertainer says the failure of his Broadway play American Buffalo was due to one particularly harsh review from a famous theater critic.

“We got crushed by one critic, Ben Brantley from The New York Times,” said the actor. “All you need is one to say bad things and he was the only one. So, write your protest letters to Ben Brantley!“

The play, which also starred Haley Joel Osment and John Leguizamo, opened to much hype on Nov. 17, but it closed after just eight performances.

Brantley’s November 18th review compared the David Mamet revival to “a souped-up sports car’s flat tire, built for speed but going nowhere.”
