Work (for sweet, old Grandma)

This excuse only works on grandma but in order to get most people off your case, grandma has to approve you getting out the house. Grandma loves that her baby works so hard. She wishes you could stay but she understands that work is important. The best thing about grandmothers is that they don’t even need details, just say “I gotta finish up some work and I’ll be back in a little” and you are straight. The best part is Grandma is gonna set you up a plate just in case you don’t get back. In the meantime, you have more family to go through. Now you have to get through that one Uncle, you know, the one that swears he raised you but he was only around because he was just bumming a spare room.

Bribe (for that one Uncle)

That one Uncle is not going to let you leave, work won’t cut it, remember he’s a bum. So this is where you have to take an L. Spoiler alert: you are going to lose $100. For this plan to work, you have to carry exactly 6 visible 20 dollar bills in your wallet. This is what you do, when your Uncle asks you to hold him down, and he will, say “let me see what I got” and give him 5, leaving that lone 20 in your wallet. Then you top it off with “That’s all I got man, I need the 20.” He’s already shocked his nephew gave him 100. He’s straight for the night and he is not going to bother you until Christmas. Now, you have to deal with your own kind: your cousins/siblings.

This might seem pretty simple but many have messed up this one up royally and ended up spending Thanksgiving with their annoying cousins and siblings cause their excuses just don’t cut it. Remember this, the reason you are leaving is not for your own enjoyment. Many people think saying “I gotta see a girl tonight” or “I’m tryna watch the game with so and so” will get them a pass but it won’t. You have to be in pain, throw your best friend under the bus for this one. Something like “my buddy Darrell is bored over there at his crib and nobody his age is over there, I’m just gonna stop by for a little and bring him back.”  Just like that. You are out.

Now, how are you going to leave when your Mom expects you to stay?

RUN! (Mom will catch you!)

You might think I got some cool excuse for your mom, I don’t. Just leave. No eye contact, nothing. You need to understand there is no excuse that your mother will accept. She knows you very well and she knows that you are a liar. The faster you leave, the better it will be. Stop reading and leave already damn! Remember to get the plate grandma set up for you.

Strength In Numbers

- If you aren’t planning on spending the holiday with your family, you more than likely aren’t alone. Ask around and see if anyone you know is in the same boat. If you can put together a small group of people, have a pot luck dinner at someone’s house, then pass out on their couch while watching the Detroit Lions get crushed.

House Hopping

- This is my favorite. People tend to take pity on those who spend a holiday all alone. This usually leads to the golden phrase “Come over to our place for dinner!” If you tell enough people that you have no plans for the holiday, you can rack up a ton of invitations in no time at all. When Thanksgiving finally rolls around, you can sample tryptophantic goodness from a few different households. Don’t show up empty handed, though. Bring a small dessert. You also will want to use halftime at the Lions game to travel to the next house.

Thanksgiving To Go

- Some of us single men might be a little lacking in kitchen skills. Judging from the work my own mother put in to preparing it, Thanksgiving dinner can seem like a little bit of a daunting task. Fortunately, there’s help for the culinary challenged. Several supermarkets and restaurants have pre-made Thanksgiving meals available for sale. You can often buy enough for just one meal, or you can be smart and buy enough so that you’ll have leftovers the next day. Call a few places ahead of time and see if they have meals available that will have you laid out on the couch during the Lions game.

Help Out

- Another great way to spend the Thanksgiving holiday is to help those who are less fortunate than you. Research the soup kitchens, rescue missions, and homeless shelters in your area and see if they are looking for volunteers to help serve food to those in need.  Sure, you might miss the Lions game, but you will have made a valuable contribution to your community.

Forget It

- If none of these options appeal to you, then you can always just skip Thanksgiving. Inevitably, someone will tell you that you’re crazy and shouldn’t spend the holiday alone. You can just remind them of the first Thanksgiving and the displacement of Native Americans and how you don’t wish to commemorate such a heinous part of American history.  That should shut them up and leave you free to sit on the couch with Chinese take-out in your belly (they’re always open on Thanksgiving) and the Lions game on your 52″ HDTV.

The holidays are stressful enough so here are two simple recipes to go by…

Things you’ll need:

Sweet Potato Pie:

• 3 sweet potatoes
• 1/2 cup butter, softened
• 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
• 2 1/2 cups white sugar
• 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
• 4 eggs, beaten
• 3/4 cup evaporated milk
• 2 (9 inch) unbaked 9 inch pie crusts
• Instructions:

1. Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Add sweet potatoes and cook until tender but still firm, about 30 minutes. Drain, cool, peel and mash. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
2. In a large bowl, combine sweet potatoes, butter, sugar, vanilla and nutmeg. In a small bowl, whisk together the eggs and milk and blend into the sweet potato mixture.
3. Pour into pie shells and bake in preheated oven for 60 minutes, or until done.

Things You’ll Need:

4 Cheese Macaroni

• 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
• 1 (16 ounce) package elbow macaroni
• 9 tablespoons butter
• 1/2 cup shredded Muenster cheese
• 1/2 cup shredded Cheddar cheese
• 1/2 cup shredded sharp Cheddar cheese
• 1/2 cup shredded Monterey Jack cheese
• 1 1/2 cups half-and-half
• 8 ounces cubed processed cheese food
• 2 eggs, beaten
• 1/4 teaspoon salt
• 1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper
• Instructions:

1. Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil. Add the oil and the pasta and cook for 8 to 10 minutes or until al dente; drain well and return to cooking pot.
2. In a small saucepan over medium heat, melt 8 tablespoons butter; stir into the macaroni.
3. In a large bowl, combine the Muenster cheese, mild and sharp Cheddar cheeses, and Monterey Jack cheese; mix well.
4. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
5. Add the half and half, 1 1/2 cups of cheese mixture, cubed processed cheese food, and eggs to macaroni; mix together and season with salt and pepper. Transfer to a lightly greased deep 2 1/2 quart casserole dish. Sprinkle with the remaining 1/2 cup of cheese mixture and 1 tablespoon of butter.
6. Bake in preheated oven for 35 minutes or until hot and bubbling around the edges; serve.

If the guns did not kill the American Indians, biological warfare did. As early as 1763, there is recorded instances of William Trent, the commander of Fort Pitt (now western Pennsylvania) commissioning the handing out of blankets and handkerchiefs from a Pittsburgh smallpox hospital to the indigenous people in the middle of a war he was losing. Even though there is debate on what his intentions were, there is no doubt that a smallpox infection spread throughout the land and continued for more than 100 years.

Some of us may think that the original Thanksgiving feast involved Pilgrims killing American Indians right after they were fed but it happened over time. The exaggeration is not so far from the truth though. So should we not celebrate the American Indians teaching the Pilgrims how to survive, which led to their eventual doom? Or should we just celebrate the kind act of the Indians and not think of the history that followed?

Ras has recently put out some new music on his website www.raskass-central.com so I reached out to ask him how he felt about the song “Nature Of The Threat”  today and if he is adamantly opposed to having some turkey with the family on GP:

“The song was written really for myself and what I had taken from my outside reading and courses. I was going through my sister’s college textbooks, etc. I’ve had people tell me that their professors use the song in their class. It’s pretty much accurate. That song has a life of its own.

I don’t celebrate any holidays [except] birthdays and New Year’s. But I don’t come in like the Grinch and sh*t on things. I’m not a buzz kill, but me personally I don’t celebrate[holidays].

[On Thanksgiving day] I will be somewhere eating with my twins, it’s an excuse to do that. If I was in L.A. I’d be kicking it around the house. If it was up to me I’d be in the studio.”

Friends
There is nothing to be grateful for like your best friend. Through thick and thin, they have been there for you and vice versa. Write your close friends a letter of appreciation. Spend some time with your friends, talk and hang out like you have planned but always ended up too busy to actually get it done. Why should the douche bags get all the toasts? Here’s one for our friends.

Family
Mom, dad, siblings, cousins, aunt and uncles, and the great and grandparents made us who we are, literally and psychology. This network of family members gets larger over the years but that is no reason to stay out of touch. Reconnect with family members and connect with family members that you might not have known.

Home
Having a place to go to just to sit down, watch TV, go online to theurbandaily.com, or just be lazy is always great. Stay inside for the weekend. Grab some pillows and lay anywhere in the house. Be comfortable. Laugh with friends and family. Home can also be wherever you like to spend Thanksgiving. Either way, home is where you make it. And wherever you make it, make it count.

Food
Mmmm. I personally appreciate the fact that I am not starving this holiday. Spread your fortune with people that do not have enough to eat this holiday or any day of the year for that matter. From dropping a can off at a food drive to serving turkey sandwiches, helping out the community is great way to share this holiday season.

History
It has been a slow grind for the Black community but we have come a long way from being slaves in this country to having a Black man elected as our country’s President. This is the perfect time of the year to remember Frederick Douglas, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Harriet Tubman, Nat Turner, Rosa Parks and countless peoples of all colors that sacrificed their lives and reputations to help us become stronger as a unit. Show how grateful you are by continuing our progress; it doesn’t end at the presidency.

Does UNICEF’s Annual Snowflake Lighting Ceremony [PHOTOS]

Forget about the Thanksgiving turkey, partying with Fabolous was even drier! Club Promenade is known for hosting the best parties and harboring some of the biggest celeb’s under the same roof as the public. Knockout Boys Ent. made partying with Fab this holiday possible.

After arriving thirty minutes before the party ended, he just stood there surrounded by an entourage consisting of leaches who sang every word to every line of his songs. The club was full of hopefuls who came out to “Throw It In The Bag” with Fab, but by the time he had actually got there, half the space was empty. He attributed being “tardy for the party” via twitter from being stopped by the cops  (stop trying to catch him riding dirty!-lol) Luckily for myself I was in the V.I.P section and actually got to see him up close- he may be boring in the club but he sure is eye candy!

Chris Brown

Breezy should be thankful that he isn’t in jail and that he still has women who adore him despite what happened with Rihanna.

Swizz Beatz

Should be thankful he has a ride or die chick like Alicia Keys who is taking mad heat from fans over their relationship but refuses to say a word about it.

Michael Vick

That he’s out of jail and doing what he loves again. And that Aaron Hall hasn’t come looking for him yet.

Tyra Banks

Is thankful that Oprah is ending her show on broadcast TV in two years so she can continue telling the world to kiss her fat ass with no competition.

Lil Wayne

Weezy should be thankful that he latched on to Drake. Now someone can keep the Young Money banner flying while he serves his bid.

Rick Ross

Should be thankful that despite having his Baby Momma in a web porno, a tell-all book written about him, confessing to being a C.O. and seeing his kids hang out with Curtis in Vegas, people still seem to like his music more than 50 Cent’s.

The Roots

With a steady gig on late night TV they can be thankful that their  livelihood is no longer dependent on the Def Jam marketing department or Japanese tour promoters.

Raekwon

The Chef should be thankful he became one of the few artists that can drop a proper sequel with Only Built For Cuban Linx 2 and that Joe Budden didn’t sue him for the on-camera eye-jammy.

Jay-Z

Besides waking up to Beyonce then hitting the stage with Alicia Keys every other week, now he has Beanie Sigel losing his damn mind, thus giving him some sparring practice between talk show appearances.

Every year, someone manages to make a complete fool out of themselves in the public eye by doing something so completely asinine.  We’ve combed through our collective memories of 2009 and come up with a list of the biggest turkeys of 2009 that aren’t slathered in delicious gravy.

5. Beanie Sigel: Beanie had been off of everyone’s radar for awhile, thanks to some legal issues, and a couple of underwhelming albums. Things got worse for Beanie after he decided that his former Roc co-hort Jay-Z was a villain that he needed to take out.  But that’s not the worst of it… Enter 50 Cent, who has a bit of a vendetta against Jay and a new album to promote. 50 essentially exploited Beanie’s problems with Jay as a way to keep his name fresh in our minds before his album dropped.

4. Kanye West: Everyone knows Kanye’s out of control, but his outbursts and unapologetic egotism reached its tipping point at this year’s MTV VMA’s when Yeezy interrupted Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech and claimed that she was not worthy of the award.  Harsh.

3. Charles Hamilton: The pink clad, Sonic The Hedgehog obsessed underground MC had a horrible summer.  First, video leaked of Charles being punched in the face by his girl after telling the whole world that she may or may not have aborted their child.  Then he caught flack for crediting the late J. Dilla as executive producer of his album even though the two had never met and no one from Dilla’s family or estate knew who he was.  Charles eventually went into hiding and was reportedly dropped from his label, Interscope.

1. Dr. Conrad Murray: You can’t be responsible for the death of Michael Jackson and not be considered the biggest turkey of not only the year, but probably the decade.

Every year, people all over the United States gather to celebrate the survival of the Pilgrims through that first brutal winter after they landed in the Virginia colony.  This celebration usually involves a large feast in which family and friends gather together to give thanks to God.

This year, we at The Urban Daily have put together the guest list for our ideal celebrity Thanksgiving day feast.

50 Cent: For all of his macho posturing and, let’s face it, childish antics, Curtis still seems like a pretty fun guy to be around.  He’s constantly shown that he’s got a sense of humor, and seems rather smart.  However, his penchant for getting into tiffs with other MCs means we have to be careful who else we invite. For this reason, we’re asking Curtis to bring a nice beef dish.

Chris Brown: It’s been a pretty rough year for Chris Breezy.  He beat up his girlfriend, lost some endorsement deals, got booted from Timbaland’s new album, and he’s got a rather unfortunate album cover. He’s been rather repentant for his actions and seems to have humbled himself a bit.  We’re requesting that Chris bring some humble pie to dinner.

Lil’ Wayne: 2009 was probably Weezy’s best year to date. He seemed rather unstoppable.  As this will be one of Weezy’s last big meals before he heads to jail next year, we want Wayne to be comfortable.  Wayne will be handling all beverages.  Just go easy on the drinks that are in the styrofoam cups.

Kanye West: Kanye’s ego finally caused a bit of a backlash for him this year after he stormed the stage and interrupted Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards.  Because ‘Ye is so full of himself, we’ve asked him to bring stuffing for Nicki Minaj’s turkey.

Nicki Minaj: Why is Nicki bringing the turkey?  Because she’s a bird.  Next!

Alicia Keys: Ms. Keys has been the subject of a lot of scorn in the blogosphere for her alleged homewrecking relationship with Swizz Beatz. We’ve asked Swizz’s side piece to bring the side dish of her choice.

Keri Hilson: Keri’s inexplicably been on the come-up this year. She’s had several high profile collaborations despite the fact that the majority of her songs are rather uninteresting.  This leads us to ask her to bring a mixed greens salad, something bland and lacking in nutritional value.

Stephon Marbury: Starbury had a bit of an interesting summer. It seemed like he had a complete and total meltdown during a Ustream broadcast where we witnessed him crying, singing Kirk Franklin songs, and eating petroleum jelly. We are simply asking Stephon to bring some cranberry sauce. It tastes better on stuffing than Vaseline.

Ray-J: Somehow, Ray-J’s VH1 reality show, For The Love of Ray-J, got renewed for a second season. Ray-J’s celebrity always puzzled me. Despite the fact that he’s Brandy’s brother, there hasn’t been much of a reason for him to be a celebrity.  We’ve requested that he bring a giant ham to dinner.

T.I.: We sent out an invitation to T.I. and asked him to bring biscuits, but his publicist reminded us that he was in jail for being in possession of biscuits of another sort…

Black Eyed Peas: It would’ve been too easy for us to ask Will.I.Am, Fergie and those other two guys to bring some black eyed peas.  Instead, we’re requesting that this stinky band prepare a stinky batch of chitlins for our thanksgiving meal.

Easily the funniest episode of The Cleveland Show they’ve done so far.

The Thanksgiving holiday is upon us and it got me to thinking about some of my favorite dinner scenes from the movies. Watching these clips will either make you hungry or make you want to start a food fight.

The quintessential family meal set to film complete with every type of food you could imagine.

Hands down the funniest movie dinner scene ever. John Witherspoon has built an entire career on the catch-prases “Bang, bang, bang” and “you’ve got to coordinate” alone.

DJ Drama will help feed the city of Atlanta’s needy this Thanksgiving holiday during the First Annual Turkey Challenge.

DJ Drama and all of Radio One’s Atlanta stations (Hot 107.9, Majic 107.5, Praise 102.5) have partnered with Hosea Feed the Hungry to help purchase 3,000 turkeys.

Drama, along with other on-air personalities, will host call-ins all day on November 16, live from the DeKalb Mall on November 16.

The goal is to raise enough money for the turkeys, which will feed thousands of under served families in Atlanta and the Southeast.

“This is an important event for not only me and the Aphilliates, but for Radio One Atlanta,” DJ Drama told AllHipHop.com. “The Atlanta community has provided us with so much love and support over the years and without them, we would not be the names we are today. It is our absolute pleasure to put together this event and provide to those who are in need.”

In the World of Entertainment-and the world in general-here are 8 things to be thankful for when you look back at the last 12 months.

8. The Dark Knight

Hands down, dopest movie of the year. From the dark and comedic portrayal of The Joker by the late Heath Ledger to the surprisingly twisted appeal of Aaron Eckerts’ Two-Face this flick raised the bar for comic book movies in both plot, action and drama. Why did we love The Joker? “See, I’m a man of simple tastes. I like dynamite… and gunpowder… and gasoline! Do you know what all of these things have in common? They’re cheap!” True indeed.

7. Grand Theft Auto 4

Not only was its 6 million units sold in the first week a record breaker for video games, it was one of the biggest openings in all of entertainment. While it may have caused some relationships to end, the resulting loss in jobs meant players were right back home to spend time with their loved ones-or play more GTA.

6. The Wii Fit

For the rest of you who want to kill calories instead of bad guys the Wii fit was the boogie board to buy. Parents who grew up telling their moms that playing Street Fighter II for hours was actually healthy were given long overdue redemption.

5. USA Basketball

After the embarrassing loss at the 2004 Olympics in Athens Greece, the USA Basketball “Redeem Team” made up of Lebron James, Chris Paul, Carmelo Anthony, Dwight Howard and anyone else you draft early in Fantasy Leagues, took home the Gold this year. We’re also proud of Melo for not laughing too hard at the announcer who called his cornrows “modified dread locks” on live television.

4. Michael Phelps
The Gold Medal-winning Olympic swimmer not only gave us something else to watch when the Basketball team wasn’t playing, he made us feel a whole lot better for eating those extra helpings of bacon and grits at breakfast.

3. The Carter III

Love him or hate him, the spectacle that was Lil Wayne reached a fever pitch with the release of his latest project. From auto-tune to David Axelrod, the breadth of the CD justified the over 1 million copies he sold in his first week. Rappers everywhere owe a special thanks to producer Bangladesh for giving them that “A Milli” beat to test drive their freestyles on.

2. Beyonce’s legs

Jay-Z finally wised up and “put a ring on it” but that hasn’t stopped us from indulging in the spectacle that is Beyonce Knowles. How mesmerizing is Beyonce? Watch the video for “Single Ladies” on mute and play “Crazy In Love” in the background. See a difference? No. Do you care? Nope

1. Barack Obama Elected

This is the ultimate four-for-one blockbuster. In one night the American people not only elected their first African-American President, they got rid of George Bush, gave Sarah Palin the Heisman, and made it so that there is actually a First Lady that we can have inappropriate thoughts about for the first time since Jackie O.

Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system kicked off the holidays with record- breaking console sales on one of the biggest shopping weekends of the year in the U.S. Retailers reported Xbox 360 console sales over the Black Friday weekend were on pace to beat previous years, outselling the PlayStation 3 by a three-to-one ratio and estimating a 25 percent increase from Xbox 360 Black Friday sales figures from 2007.

Strong game sales rounded out a historic Black Friday for Xbox 360, with record-paced software sales continuing for key Microsoft titles, such as Gears of War 2, Fable II, and Lips. Xbox 360 continues to have the highest game attach rate of any console at 8.1 games per console.

Ludacris will bring holiday cheer to 500 Atlanta families this Thanksgiving, via his non-profit organization, The Ludacris Foundation.

This weekend (November 22 & 23rd), Luda and the foundation’s LudaCares program will distribute Thanksgiving turkeys and pies to underprivileged residents of metro Atlanta.

“This is the foundation’s sixth year giving away turkeys and distributing food boxes for Thanksgiving,” Ludacris revealed. “I especially look forward to this time of year because it allows me [to] directly touch the people we are trying to help.”

As previously reported, DreamWorks is currently securing the remake rights to the 2003 Korean film about a man’s mysterious kidnapping, 15-year imprisonment and feverish quest for revenge upon being released.

Protosevich has also written “Poseidon” and “The Cell,” and he worked on “Thor” for Marvel Studios. His screenplay for “Legend” helped the film earn $584 million in revenue worldwide.

Smith, meanwhile, was in Miami recently for a charity screening of his latest film, “Seven Pounds,” in which he plays a man who does remarkable things for seven strangers. In keeping with the movie’s theme, Smith also donated 300 turkeys to the needy.

“Seven Pounds” arrives in theaters on Dec. 19.
