What: In 1986, Afeni Shakur relocated her daughter and son Tupac from Harlem to Baltimore.  After two years at Paul Laurence Dunbar High School, the late rapper transferred to the Baltimore School for the Arts, where he got an education in acting, poetry and dance. Joe Budden’s first single dropped in the summer of 2003. The
subsequent video for the Just Blazed produced track featured elements
of the Naomi Watts horror flick, The Ring. Instead of a deranged
twelve year old girl climbing through our television sets, it was the
light skinned rapper from Jersey. Can we also pinpoint this clip as
the inception of Joey’s love for video chicks?

9. Ludacris – How Low
Chris Bridges is known for taking established concepts and turning
them on their ear. He and director, Dave Meyers use the basis of
Candyman as inspiration for the clip. Women no longer needed to
whisper Candyman’s name three times in front of a mirror for his guest
appearance. Drop it low enough and Luda would show up and watch her
bend over to the front and touch her toes.

Erykah Badu established herself a visual artist with her premiere
video. “On & On” is a Cinderella story set against The Color Purple
backdrop. We find Ms. Badu folding laundry, chasing after dogs, and
struggling to get a comb through a little girl’s tough hair. The best
part is when Erykah finally gets her Shug Avery on and the woman
snaps,” I know that ain’t my table cloth she got on!”

Hov drew a line in the sand with “D.O.A.” He wanted artists to get
more creative in their music making. However, video director, Anthony
Mandler, lifted the concept from the ’70s Italian film, Zabriskie
Point. The stark contrast between the dark lighting of the background
juxtaposed with the garish look of exploding objects pays homage to
Michelangelo Antonioni’s vision. Sidenote: Thank heavens Jigga had the
clippers grace his scalp in the clip. He had dudes walking around
looking wreckless following behind him.

6. Ashanti – Foolish
For Ashanti’s first solo outing, she wrote a song many women could
relate to. Nothing drove the message of being foolish for staying with
a partner who mistreats you home more so than the Irv Gotti helmed
flick. Gotti’s affinity for mob movies is further proven as he places
Ashanti and Terrance Howard in the role of Henry and Karen Hill from
Goodfellas. Howard gallivants with jump offs without regard,
while Ashanti is the dutiful wife at home, stuck.

5. D-12 – Fight Music
“Fight Music” is a rambunctious anthem to get listeners hyped. The
video matched the spirit of the record. Based on the ’70s classic, The
Warriors, the video features a mob of men carrying different kinds of
weapons with the intent to harm the dirty dozen. The group call on
their allies and the video ends with an intense face off. Can you dig
it?

4. Redman – Whateva Man
Redman and his partner in crime, Method Man parody The Blues Brothers
in the visual for “Whateva Man.” We follow a day in the life of these
two cool guys after one is released from the state pen. Think of this
as the precursor to their weed comedy, How High.

Bussa Bus has made of the most incredible videos this side of the
’90s.One of his best is the joint for the 1997 hit, “Put Your Hands
Where My Eyes Can See.” Directed by Hype Williams, the clip was a
spoof of Eddie Murphy’s classic, Coming To America, with Trevor Smith
playing Prince Akeem. Despite the the eye popping graphics and
visuals,fans commented immensely about the high energy African
choreography by Fatima Robinson performed at half speed. Pure genius.

2. Nas- Street Dreams
Based on Casino, Nas parallels life on ghetto blocks with the plot of
the Scorsese drama. This is Hype Williams during his pinnacle. A video that
features ostentatious colors and the stacking effect is classic Hype.
The cinematic style only added to its mystique. But no matter how good
the video is, everyone will constantly refer to it as the one where Nas wore a pastel pink suit.

1. 2Pac & Dr. Dre – California Love
In 1995, 2Pac had just gotten out of prison and was itching to record.
When he heard the Dre production, he knew this was going to be a huge
smash. While Pac was right, the video is sits right alongside it in
the pantheon of hip hop greatness. Add it up, a young Chris Tucker and
Tony Cox acting a fool and Roger Troutman’s cameo set in a
futuristic Mad Max Beyond The Thunderdome world and you have a recipe
for success. No matter how hard anyone tries, this video remains king.

Charnas, a Pulitzer Prize Fellow, was one of the first writers for the Source magazine and part of the generation of young writers who helped create hip-hop journalism. His writing has appeared in the Village Voice, the Washington Post, GIANT, and newspapers around the country. He spent 15 years in the music business, starting in the mailroom of Profile Records in the late 80s, and was VP of A&R for Rick Rubin’s American Recordings.

September 7, 1996 was the last time Iron Mike Tyson walked out of the ring as a heavyweight champion. After defeating Bruce Seldon at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada the world’s youngest heavyweight was supposed to celebrate regaining the WBA title. But later that night his close friend Tupac Shakur was gunned down and died from his wounds six days later. The general public has not heard Tyson’s thoughts on the events of that night until now.

As part of ESPN’s 30 For 30 series, director Reggie Rock Bythewood tells the story of that infamous night and shares the friendship between Tyson and Tupac in One Night In Vegas. The co-writer of the Notorious biopic spoke with TheUrbanDaily about what it was like to relive one of the most painful nights in hip-hop history.

TUD: What should people take away from this film? Is this more of a Tyson movie or a Pac movie?

Reggie Rock Bythewood: It’s an ESPN film but it doesn’t’ feel like anything that they’ve done before. It’s Pac heavy and Mike heavy. It’s really in many ways a collision of hip-hop and boxing. What I sought out to do was hold up a mirror and honestly reflect Mike and Pac. I shot it as much as I could like a graphic novel. In many ways I felt like Mike and Pac were these heroes out of a graphic novel. Not a comic book. Superheroes in a graphic novel are flawed and don’t always have a happy ending. When you peel away a couple of layers you realize they’re human. I really just wanted to offer a perspective about this night that maybe most of us have never considered or seen.  One of the most significant moments in the documentary is when Dr. Maya Angelou talks about visiting Mike Tyson in jail and being on set with Tupac for Poetic Justice.

What was your relationship with Mike Tyson before and after this?

Really it was all business. On set he had been pretty guarded with me but when the camera comes on he just started opening up and revealing his feelings about his friend Pac. The thing that was interesting is that we had a premier (party) in Harlem at this community center on 123rd street and Mike came out and sat down and watched the film with a bunch of kids. It was almost like it changed him. He got up afterward on stage and really talked about how moved he was by the piece. At this age he can look back himself fourteen years ago, but unfortunately Pac couldn’t do the same.

I think sometimes when you go into it you have a preconceived idea about what you need for the film, but he started telling me stuff about Pac that I didn’t anticipate. The first time Mike met Pac was at the Palladium on Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood. He saw this little skinny guy trying to get in the club and the bouncers wouldn’t let him in because he wasn’t dressed appropriately. So Mike told the bouncers to cut the guy some slack and so Pace gets in. Later on in the party Pac gets on stage and starts rocking it and that’s how their relationship was formed.

What were the challenges in telling a story that’s 14-years-old?

There is something I set out not to do. I did not set out to do a movie that reveals who [Tupac's] assailants were or any of that. I just set out to do a movie to show how Mike and other people were feeling that night. After the fight it was supposed to be a night of celebration and it came out a tragedy. The challenge is capturing that emotion 14 years later, but people talked about it like it just happened last week.  You could see it in their eyes. From a film-making standpoint I didn’t want the film to just be talking heads so we had a little fun with it. We made it cinematic and used a lot of music with it and I even have some spoken word artists in there. So it’s real different for ESPN.

You co-wrote the screenplay to Notorious. How did that help you with this if at all?

These hip-hop stories just follow me. I remember when I first started out I was writing on A Different World, I had the Kris Kross episode. And on New York Undercover hip-hop was a centerpiece of that series that I was writing on. With Notorious what [I learned] was even icons are human beings. Even icons have flaws and weaknesses. People will expect a lot of edge and grit but we’ll challenged people’s perspectives of both men. I definitely think that we are getting a glimpse in to their world and this night that we haven’t seen before.

5. Notorious B.I.G. Missing You BIG tells deeply personal tales about homies from Brookyln who passed on, the song didn’t come out till after his death, making it all the more poignant.

4. The LOX We’ll Always Love BIG Poppa This song was a lot more real tom me then Diddy’s I’ll Be Missing You. The Lox spit vivid lyrics and the hook completed the touching tribute.

3. Bone Thugs In Harmony Crossroads. A great Gospel inspired tribute to loved ones who have passed on.

2. Dr. Dre The Message. The beautiful beat produced by Lord Finesse and the lyrics by Dre combine for a touching tribute for Dre’s brother, Tyree.

It’s Earth Day people, so prepare the electric cars, green paper goods, and recycled rappers. Yes, recycled rappers- the ones who’s voices and have been borrowed, chopped and screwed over and over…and over.

Very few days go by where one of the following lyricists aren’t used to help prop up somebody’s single.    It’s true that recycling is good for the Earth but is it good for music? Let us know what you think!

Hov is known for doing his fair share of sampling of others (Biggie anyone?), but we can’t deny that his voice,music, and swag also gets used just as much if not more often. Jay has been sampled by at least 86 other artists and covered by 10 artists.

Audio Two has one of the most famous songs in hip hop history so it’s no wonder bits and bites of the lyrics have been used by over 30 other artists. Tupac Shakur has probably had his songs and vocals reused and remixed more than any other MC. (Biggie runs a close second but he just didn’t have as much material to take.) In 2008 Nas took the vocals from “I Wonder If Heaven Gotta Ghetto” for the pro-Obama track “Black President.”

Fans may still be arguing whether or not hip-hop is dead, but over the years rappers have played with the image of their own deaths to add shock value to their music videos.  Here are five examples that had people talking.

5) 50 Cent, “Think About Me” Directed by Chris Robinson

Curtis got his real life ex-girlfriend, Vivica A. Fox, to act out any revenge fantasies she might have had, slashing his tires and literally blowing up his spot cuz they both got hot.

4) Nas, “Hate Me Now” Directed by Hype Williams

Crucifixion ain’t no fiction but after Nas and P Diddy imitated the Passion Of The Christ in this clip, Mr. Combs had second thoughts. But before he could gracefully bow out  the clip aired on MTV. An irate Diddy stormed the offices of Nas’ then manager, Steve Stout,and cracked a bottle of haterade over his head.

3) Tupac, “I Ain’t Mad At Cha” Directed by Tupac Shakur & Kevin Swain

In the most tragic example of art imitating life, the beginning of this video features Tupac being shot in a drive-by and later dying in an ambulance. The single was released two days after his actual death. The coincidence just fueled the Makaveli mystique and belief that Tupac was still alive after his murder.

2) Jay-Z, “99 Problems” Directed by Mark Romanek

While MTV usually denies videos depicting violence, the Mike Jordan of recording got a pass for this third clip from The Black Album, which featured him getting perforated by gunfire on a street corner. Jay-Z explained that the shooting was analogous to the “death” of Jay-Z, and the “rebirth” Shawn Carter.

1) Kanye West, “Flashing Lights” Directed by Kanye West and Spike Jones

West proved to be a student of the “psychic violence” made popular in movies like Seven.  We’re disturbed by what’s implied rather than shown. In the second of three videos for this single Yeezy is tied up in the trunk of a Mustang parked in the middle of the desert. His half-naked girlfriend kisses him on the cheek and as the camera pulls away, she takes a shovel and proceeds to show him how much she digs his style. Even though Kanye has a flair for the dramatic we never thought that he would take it this far…

I came across this today. Tupac may have had issues as a person but as an artist he was as gifted a poet as Langston Hughes. IN this clip he shows the poetic value of his music by kicking the lyrics to “Keep Ya Head Up” acapella, poetry style.

“…watch a flick, illin and root for the villain..” – Nas, “One Time For Ya Mind”

As likable as the good guys are in movies  (we see you Will Smith) there is something about a badass that keeps us lined up at the box office quoting them long after the credits roll. Just think about who is more memorable: Tupac’s Bishop from Juice or his Lucky character from Poetic Justice? Thought so.

Not only is it more fun to play the bad guy in a movie, it seems to pay more dividends. Monique has won a Golden Globe for her role in Precious as the abusive mother, Mary, and Denzel won his first Best Actor Oscar playing a villain in Training Day.  The last time a Black actor won an award for being nice on screen was Jennifer Hudson winning Best Supporting Actress for  Dream Girls (2006), Jamie Foxx for Ray and Morgan Freeman for Million Dollar Baby in 2004.  While I’m sure many of you reading this can quote the crooked cop Alonzo line for line, I doubt most folks can remember one thing that “Eddie Scrap-Iron Dupris” said in that boxing gym.

So here is our salute to those characters that were so good at being bad.
