Just two episodes into the fourth season of TNT’s underrated hit cop drama Southland, viewers are already buzzing about it. From its perfect casting and its unapologetically brazen appeal, the show has easily picked up right where shows like Brooklyn Heights and New York Undercover left off. Here are five reasons you need to be watching it:

Regina King: Let’s face it; she’s really the reason to watch anything. But in Southland, the veteran actress has found her niche as the tough yet compassionate Detective Lydia Adams. She’s smart, real, and not afraid to speak her mind, but never at the expense of becoming that “angry black woman.” In essence, she’s that roundaway girl ladies would want to grab a drink with, and that intellectual woman that men can bring home to mama.

It’s one of the best shows you may not be watching: In 2009, NBC discarded this gritty cop drama from its lineup after not airing a single episode of its five completed, reportedly claiming the show was too dark for their 9pm time slot. But one network’s trash is another’s treasure. TNT was more than happy to pick up this flailing drama in January 2010, where it can still be seen today. This is the one of the best dramas on TV. It’s time to prove to NBC how big a mistake they made in letting it go.

Black star power: Raise your hand if you can think off the top of your head how many cop series there have been featuring a black woman as the lead. Right, not many. Too few, actually. Usually the black actress is downstairs in the lab, quickly dragging the body in, or the hardened commissioner. Detective Adams is center stage, hitting the streets, running after vicious criminals and asking the tough questions. You’ve got to love a show that doesn’t hide its best talent from the central storyline.

Lucy Liu: Kick starting what will hopefully be a long stint on the series, film star Lucy Liu has joined the show this season as Officer Jessica Tang. And, just as you’d expect, the always spot-on action star fits right into the show’s brassy format we’ve all come to know and love. Right out the gate, the actress is kicking butt and taking names, and already has the male-dominated squad appropriately shook. Adding Liu just seemed like a natural progression, and it’s good to be able to watch her now each week.

Because it’s good: Southland is like a wild animal you can’t tame and are slightly frightened by, but you’re so hypnotized by its every movement from one scene to the next that you can’t turn away. Ferocious and mean but so smart and authentic, the show will make you forget you’re watching network television with its cleverly censored format. Just like when you listen to a radio edit of your favorite jam, you still know what they’re really saying, and you love them even more because of it.

Catch Southland Tuesdays on TNT at 10pm.

Naturi Naughton’s roles seem to be getting more provacative at each turn of her career. Fresh off her role as Bunny Brenda on The Playboy Club which was cancelled after three episodes, Naughton is set to be a series regular on the upcoming Lifetime series, The Client List.

The television show is based on a 2010 Lifetime movie featuring Jennifer Love Hewitt. Hewitt played a deserted housewife who winds up running a rub and tug establishment. Naturi’s character is Kendra, a gorgeous employee of the parlor.

No word on when the show is slated to premiere. Hopefully, it’s sooner rather than later.

Picking television shows that will go on to become massive hits is like the game of darts. You aim for the bull’s eye yet somehow wind up hitting the wall five feet away from your target.

Well, not all television shows that premiered this season ended up like that, but the ones in this piece did. For many TV shows it’s grand opening, grand closing within a few episodes. Here’s a look at the five television shows that came and went this year.

“The Playboy Club”

Steeped in controversy before any episode had aired, The Playboy Club was doomed from the start. Feminist groups rallied against the show because of its objectification of women. Parents Television Council called the show a “blatant attempt to obliterate any remaining standards of broadcast decency.” Many were reluctant to watch for fear it was a microwaved version of the AMC 60s drama, Mad Men. They were right. Eddie Cibirian played a lawyer with ties to the mob and of course he was a womanizing ladies man. The plot and script were so weak that the show was canceled after three episodes. The only reason I tuned in to the dead on arrival series was to catch Naturi Naughton in the bunny costume. Call me thirsty all you want. You saw her in that sex scene in Notorious.

“In The Flow With Affion Crockett”

When Fox announced Youtube funnyman, Affion Crockett, would be getting his very own sketch comedy show, people were hyped. His impressions of Drake and Jay-Z were spot on and his work on Wild’n Out was great too. However, Crockett became a victim of his past work overshadowing his new stuff. “In The Flow” was excellent with the ideas and lousy with the execution. After the first episode aired, everyone lost interest and people who didn’t watch the first episode couldn’t have cared less when the show got the axe due to poor ratings. Television just might not be Affion’s avenue.

“Charlie’s Angels”

A huge trend for the past few years has been the rebooting of classic tv shows. 90210 is a hit for The CW, so every other network is following suit. Wrong move. ABC updated the Farrah Fawcett vehicle with a new twist–a black angel. The allure of seeing an angel that looked like us in conjunction with Mika Kelly’s fine self couldn’t save this sinking ship. There’s no country for reboots of shows that have already run their course. When will Hollywood learn.

“Pan Am”

The ABC series centered around the relationships between the pilots and stewardesses of the iconic airline in the 60s. Though audiences were intrigued about the show, it didn’t live up to the hype. It got to a point where women only watched to see the fashions and plot how they could incorporate 60s style into their modern closets. But even that got boring after a while. Naturally, someone had to go. *Kevin Hart voice*

“State of Georgia”

Raven-Symone’s newest sitcom was the first of hers not have her audience be exclusively children. That’s probably why the series was canceled after one season. When you’re used to doing slapstick comedy, growing up can be a challenge. Adults weren’t checking for the show because Raven-Symone had lost the Cosby cuteness. Kids couldn’t be bothered because they just wanted That’s So Raven back. Raven-Symone got caught between a rock and a hard place.

Elam struggles to come to terms with who and what he is: half white and half black. He doesn’t feel at home in either world.

Remember once upon a time in the mid 1990′s when Black Hollywood ruled the T.V. airwaves on Thursday nights? After a visit with the Huxtables on the “Cosby Show” and a lesson in higher learning at Hillman College on “A Different World”, over 15 million viewers would tune in at 9:00 P.M. for their weekly fix of “New York Undercover.” Malik Yoba became an overnight sensation in his role as J.C. Williams, a street smart police detective and loving father to his 11 year old son. Since then Yoba has remained a fixture on the pop culture radar, from his role as Jamaican bobsledder Yul Brenner in Cool Runnings to loving hubby Gavin in Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married 1 & 2. Yoba has also kept busy by producing and directing his own web series “Shop Talk” on BET.com.

In his latest role on the hit Syfy series “Alphas” Yoba has been elevated to superhero status–literally. He plays Bill Harken, a former FBI detective with the special ability of “fight or flight.” The Urban Daily caught up with Yoba to discuss his new love for Twitter, his surreal experience working with Janet Jackson, which black superhero he’d like to play on the big screen and why we need to stop whining about the lack of quality black programming on television.

Congratulations on “Alphas”—it was the most watched series debut on Syfy in 2 yrs. Why do you think the show has been successful?

I think the folks at Syfy are really smart. It’s very enjoyable to be a part of the show–the cast is just great. It’s a network that really seems to understand its core audience and how to appeal to them.

There’s a lot of support for the show on Twitter. How do you like being on Twitter?

I’m actually on Twitter right now. I’m usually on there through my phone, but up in Canada I’ve been off the grid because my U.S. phone isn’t working. So I have my computer on all the time in my trailer. I’ve never seen Twitter as effective as I did in the last few weeks. People have taken ownership of the show. When people reach out to me, I respond to them and engage with them in a very real way. When you engage with people as an artist you know exactly what they feel and what they’re thinking. We live in a different time so I just think it’s amazing.

How did you land the role of Bill Harken?

When I first found out about the role I wasn’t interested. I had just done a series the year before that had me in Vancouver for six months that went nowhere and I was very frustrated because it didn’t have a distributor yet, but it had the studio and had a global partnership. The producer and the studio gave me a lot of pushback when I said “Let’s take a lot of the behind the scenes stuff and put it on line and get a viral campaign going. We can get six months of free publicity” and no one was listening to me. They were like “No, let’s not put anything on line yet because we haven’t been picked up yet” and I was like “You guys are missing the point. We’re living in 2009.”I was frustrated because I was away from my family for six months for a show I thought was pretty cool but they weren’t very intelligent in how they marketed the show.

For 2010 I was producing and directing my own content (“Shop Talk”) and I was happy doing that. I was branding myself and taking a more entrepreneurial path. That’s where my head was. I heard Jack Bender (Executive Producer) was coming into town to meet with a few actors for the part. So I decided to look him up online. What attracted me to him was three years into acting he began directing and producing. He was also a father. I felt like someone who started out as an actor and went into directing and producing would know where my head was at. I met with Jack and I immediately liked his vibe because he is also an artist, a painter. He walked in and had paint on his boots. They actually had the role written for a white dude but at a certain point they decided they just wanted the best actor for the role. The producers and the director knew from watching my audition tape with Jack that I was the right choice.

Lately we’ve been flooded with lots of comic book movies, but there hasn’t been a lot of representation of minorities in these movies. Which black superhero would you like to see adapted to the big screen?

Well I was a fan of Luke Cage (Power Man) when I was a kid. I definitely wanted to do that and also Spawn, but my man Michael Jai White did that. Yeah, Luke Cage but I heard Tyrese is supposed to be doing that.

Really? I know Idris Elba has expressed interest in the role and The Old Spice guy Isaiah Mustafa has been campaigning on Twitter for the role as well.

See, now I’m gonna have to start some shit on Twitter since I’m officially the only black man on T.V. that has powers. I’mma tweet that right now, “Who thinks Malik Yoba should play Power Man?” We’ll see what happens.

Let’s talk about some of your other roles. You were on ”Girlfriends” as Brock Harris. One of things I really liked about your storyline was your chemistry with Tracee Ellis Ross. How did the two of you translate that chemistry on screen?

The funny thing is I actually knew Tracee before she was an actress, when she was still working in fashion publishing. So the funniest thing about playing her boyfriend, was that we actually went on one date. We went out one time while I was on “New York Undercover” in our 20′s, so when Mara Brock Akil asked me to join the show in 2003, it was always a running joke between me and Tracee because nothing ever happened after that first date. But I loved doing that show because it made me want to do a sitcom. It’s an easy work week, like 20 hours a week. At some point I’d love to do a really good sitcom.

You played Gavin, Janet Jackson’s husband in Why Did I Get Married? and Why Did I Get Married Too? How difficult was it to play all that tension and hostility opposite Janet, in light of her just losing her brother Michael, knowing she was in such a vulnerable state?

It was a little bit surreal working with Janet in general, because of her resemblance to Michael. So there were times when we were filming the fight scenes, she would do something that would take me out of the moment. Because it felt like Michael was in the room. That was bizarre. There was a high level of sensitivity around what she was going through. We didn’t talk about it but I admired her for showing up and doing the work.

Audiences also remember you as bobsledder Yul Brenner in Cool Runnings. Now we’ve seen a lot of actors play Jamaican characters, but their accents for the most part are pretty terrible. Can you share the secret to doing a proper Jamaican accent?

I just think some people have an ear for dialects and nuances in language and some people don’t. I wrote a character who was based on a dude I knew. He was British, his mother was Jamaican, and his father was Nigerian. I had a conversation with the son and the parents, and I’m going back and forth with all these different accents. I’ve actually bought tapes on how to do a British accent but for me it’s not that cerebral. It’s more of an instinctive thing.

Your most iconic role of course is J.C. Williams on NY Undercover. Looking back, did you know that this show would have such a cultural impact?

I had no idea. You only know these things in retrospect but the one thing you do know is when you’re shooting it, it feels real. Like everything I’ve ever done that has worked, is when I get that feeling. Like Cool Runnings the crew was cracking up, you’re cracking up, you’re like “this works.” So “New York Undercover” had that. Being someone from New York, raised in Harlem and the Bronx, I was like “I need my patent leather Adidas, my army jacket, and my Tims. I was 26 years old, I’m from the hood, I know this. When I’m doing a role the one thing I ask is “Is this believable? am I being truthful?” People think acting is just memorizing lines and doing facial expressions. No it’s about traveling along a path of discovery, intention and connection.

When I think about “New York Undercover” one of the things that stood out to me was the relationship between J.C. and his son G. It was a great portrayal of a single black father actively co-parenting in raising his child. Did you have any input in how this father/son relationship played out?

Absolutely. That role I based on my father and my brother. My brother was a teenage father, so when I was doing the show my character was a 26 year old father with an 11 year old son. I was always injecting my ideas into the show based on my father’s values. There would be a scene where G was doing his homework with the T.V. on and I’d say “Absolutely not.” We didn’t even have a T.V. in my house until I was 13. My dad called it the “idiot box.” I’d tell them to get some books and put them around G, while he was doing his homework. Or the script would read “J.C. cooks G a T.V. dinner” and I was like “Nope, because I’m going to cook him some real food in this scene.”

A T.V. dinner? Really?

That’s what the writers thought, that my character couldn’t cook. But my dad taught me how to cook so that was total bullshit. In the pilot episode of “Alphas” you see me in my first scene with my wife. The director asked me “So how are we going to do this?” Because this particular scene was in the kitchen, I asked props for an ironing board and an iron because I was going to iron my shirt. I did that because my dad taught me how to iron, and also because you certainly don’t see black men doing that on T.V.

“New York Undercover” was also known for its soundtrack (by James Mtume) and the musical guests featured performing at Natalie’s night club. Which ones are your most memorable?

We had the biggest stars everyone from Biggie to James Brown. B.B. King let me play his guitar Lucille. I sang with Stevie Wonder on the show. Those were the highlights of my life. Every show I’m on I wish we could do something like that.

You’re also a musician. If we were to scroll through your iPod what songs or artists would be in your most songs played rotation?

I’m all over the place. On the low I’m a huge Lil Wayne fan. I think dude’s a genius. Everything from Adele to reggae to Moby. The hottest group I’m listening to right now is House of Balloons. You can download their free EP “The Weeknd.” It’s this Ethiopian kid from Toronto and Drake co-signed him. The kid is bananas.

Looking back on the 90′s we had such an abundance of scripted black shows from “Living Single,” “Martin,” “A Different World” etc. Today with the exception of “The Game” and Tyler Perry sitcoms, all we have are a lot of reality shows like “Basketball Wives” or “Love and Hip Hop” that many in the community feel send a negative image of African-Americans. Do you think there’s an underlying agenda where that’s concerned, or are the networks just giving the people what they want?

I think we need to create our own shit, period, end of story. People need to be willing to create their own content. That’s why I have my own web series. In 2011 with digital cameras and new media we don’t have to keep saying there’s lack of opportunities blah, blah, blah. It’s an old story and I’m not interested in having that conversation. Creative conversation is what needs to replace the complaining conversation.

“Alphas” airs on Syfy Monday nights 10 P.M. EST/9c

Shaunie O’Neal executive producer of VH1′s “Basketball Wives,” wrote a commentary for CNN about the negative portrayal of black women on reality TV. Despite the drama that unfolds on her own show, Shaunie doesn’t feel “Basketball Wives” portrays black women in a negative light. Shaunie says watching reality television is a guilty pleasure of hers and fun to watch. However, she feels the new generation of reality TV has become more about drama than the story line.

If you ask me, “Basketball Wives” fits into that category of the new generation. The show is supposed to be based on the life of a woman married to an NBA player, but we have not seen the full view of that lifestyle. The women on the show are ex-girlfriends or baby mommas. The majority of what we see are women insulting one another and fighting over petty issues. In the show’s defense Shaunie says, “I believe that if you look closely and beyond the arguing and the fighting, you’ll see a group of women trying to get their lives back on track and figure out who they really are.” This may be so but it’s really hard to see that when the drama starts before the intro credits. I Love Shaunie O’Neal and her money making skills but I think she is being a bit delusional here.

Most people are superstitious in some form or another. Celebrities and athletes have routines to rid their minds of nervous energy before a performance or game. Usher separates bags of M&Ms by color. Missy Elliott will go back to her starting point if a black cat crosses her path. Many do these things as not to get bad luck. However, the most coveted things in Hollywood bring upon the worst luck. Take a look at our list of the curses of the entertainment industry.

The Curse of the Best Actress Oscar Winner Victims: Reese Witherspoon, Halle Berry, Sandra Bullock As an actress, women dream of one day accepting the Oscar for their riveting work in a film. The women who have graced the podium were extremely happy. They weren’t so happy once the celebration of the win died down and reality set back in. When Halle Berry became the first Black actress to win this award, Eric Benet was at her side. She filed for divorce a few months later after discovering his sex addiction. Sandra Bullock was blindsided with the news of her then husband’s two timing with model, Bombshell McGhee. Now what? Actresses are going to have to decide if they want to go for the gold or keep their husbands?
It seems that way.

The Curse of the Best New Artist Grammy Winner Victims: Arrested Development, Toni Braxton, Evanescence When Esperanza Spalding’s name was called as the 2011 Best New Artist Grammy winner, the whole world was stunned. Some because they had no idea who Spalding was and others because of the dreaded curse. Arrested Development was one of the biggest hip hop groups in the early nineties. They had hits with “Tennessee” and “Mr. Wendel.” They accepted their trophy in 1993 and disbanded shortly thereafter. Toni Braxton was the recipient the following year and her financial issues have been well documented. You might say we’re grasping at straws, but the proof is in the pudding.

The Curse of the Reality Show Victims: Nick Lachey and Jessica Simpson, Carmen Electra and Dave Navarro, Travis Barker and Shanna Moakler We’ve become a society that needs to know all of each other’s business. when it comes to celebrities, we just can’t get enough. Nick Lachey and Jessica Simpson invited viewers into their home with the mega hit, Newlyweds. We got to see Jessica ask the infamous ‘is tuna chicken or fish’ question. By the end of the third season, we could see the cracks showing in their relationship. They divorced a few months later. Carmen Electra and rock guitarist, Dave Navarro, fared much worse. Their show centered around the planning of the nuptials. Their wedding invitation featured a picture of them as corpses holding hands on morgue tables. Needless to say, their marriage was dead on arrival.

The reality star appeared to be wearing an extremely tight pair of True Religion denim shorts. “Getting Ready For My Photo shoot” was the caption to the photo that had the fellas following after the RT invaded their timeline and had the females wondering “How did Deelishis booty fit into those denim shorts?” I think everyone was wondering how. Well here is the gotcha gotcha, the shorts are not denim. Deelishis later tweeted the denim shorts were actually a swim suit bottom.

This was the second fight between the two since WillMarie aka “The Replacement” came into the house.

This may have been one of the better fights on the reality show since it was a topless one. Clearly WillMarie was pretty comfortable scrapping down without her bra on because she tore Nikki down. Check out the footage below.

Last week we opened the voting for our Greatest Black Sitcom of All-Time Competition. Yesterday voting closed for round 1 and we’re down from 64 shows to 32.

Based on the seeding of the editorial team we didn’t see any upset loses although we were surprised to see the short-lived 90′s sitcom “Thea” beat out the super-popular Disney darling “That’s So Raven.”

This week we have our eye out for several close races that could result in upset wins. In the Cosby Show division we have are eye out on number three seeded The Bernie Mac Show against six seed, The Roc.

We’re also predicting an upset in the Fresh Prince division between The Game and Diff’rent Strokes who are ranked four and five respectively.

Sony is to close 10% of its manufacturing sites, losing some 8,000 jobs in the process as the Japanese company feels the effects of the deepening economic crisis.

Sony is still believed to be incurring a loss on every PlayStation 3 that it sells, and financial expert Katsuhiko Mori told BBC that although “the number sounds big, this staff reduction won’t be enough. Sony doesn’t have any core businesses that generate stable profits – the next thing we want to see is what is going to be the business that will drive the company.”

The cutbacks come as Japan feels the impact of the global recession, with the country’s economy reportedly shrinking by some 0.5% in the past three months. Expected to be implemented by April 2010, there has been no confirmation where the cuts will take place, nor what impact they will have on Sony’s gaming division.

Ironically, Kim Kardashian, the reality TV star with the famous assets, doesn’t know how to work with what she’s got. Kardashian is a contestant on ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars” this season and she is looking a little nervous out there. The star admits that she doesn’t know how to move it and that everyone expects her to be “sexy” but she’s really not.

Last night (Sept. 23) she performed the Mambo to Sir Mix-A-Lot’s “Baby Got Back (I Like Big Butts)” with her partner Mark Ballas. The judges got on her for not knowing how to shake it and her total score was an 18 out of 30. Poor thing, keep practicing so you can make your fellow bootyliscious girls proud!

The stoner hit before the sequel smash, Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle, finds two New Jersey stoners who have a serious case of the munchies on an adventure in search of the late night hamburger place. A hilarious cameo from Doogie Howser makes this flick a classic comedy to watch with those environment-friendly peeps of yours!

Prehistoric Monsters, History Channel, 9:00pm -

If weed flicks don’t do it for you, then you can get your Jurassic Park on with the History Channel’s fan favorite - Prehistoric Monsters. Through computer generated images, age-old creatures are brought back to life and are examined to get a symbolic take on life when time stood still.

Clueless, Oxygen, 10:00pm -

In the role that made Stacey Dash a house-hold name outside the hood (and Roc-A-Fella ads/music videos), Clueless is a witty look at posh life in a Beverly Hills High School, as its most popular student deals with a hefty spending habit, affections for her step-brother and plays match-maker.

SUNDAY:

Ice Road Truckers, History Channel, 7:00pm -

Us black folks and our love of history (or is it just mines?)… Either way, Ice Road Truckers is a wildly popular show that pits men against the artic elements in hopes of still being able to do their job as truckers. On Sunday’s episode, crucial equipment must be taken into an area where a deadly polar bear has been spotted. If for anything, the comedy of seeing something that you may not put yourself into is good enough to tune into Ice Road Truckers at 7:00pm.

Ultimate Fighting: From Blood Sport to Big Time, CNBC, 8:00pm -

The wildly popular success and merchandising of the Ultimate Fighting Championshipbrand is examined, in-depth, on this very well executed documentary of the blood sport that has taken over as the popular hand-to-hand combat of entertainment; knocking boxing down a few rungs in the corporate sponsor ladder.

I Love Money, VH1, 9:00pm -

Secret alliances are made and then broken as Boston breaks down and cries for the first time on television.

Law and Order: Criminal Intent, USA, 9:00pm -

A student’s death at a private school cause the detectives to look into the secret online culture of the school. Myspace and Facebook users need not watch this one!

World’s Tallest People, DHLTH, 10:00pm -

For short people like Lil’ Wayne and T-Pain, their group T-Wayne would have to stand upon each other’s shoulders to face these giant’s covered on World’s Tallest People. The show takes a look at what it is like to be a giant in a world of average sized people.

Executive Producer Jamie Foxx and MTV presents yet another mind-numbingly dumb reality TV show. “From G’s to Gents” premieres (peep the trailer in The Daily Clip) tonight (July 15) on MTV at 10 ET and is surely to follow in its predecessor’s footsteps, like “I Love New York” and “Flavor of Love.”

The new series features 14 thugs who are taken from the Hood and taught etiquette and decorum in hopes of leaving their hard edges behind and being buffed and polished into charming gentlemen; that and a 100 thousand dollar prize for the most gentle gentleman.

The series will feature weekly guests who will try and turn these boys’ lives around; the guests will include food expert Tim Allen, mogul Master P and designer Ozwald Boateng. If you are looking for drama that is so ridiculous it will make you feel better about your own life, this is the show for you to tune in to. We’re thinking if the shows “Charm School” and “Kept” mated and made a baby, that baby would be called “From G’s to Gents.”
