Tyrese wants to send you an invitation. Well, sort of. The singer is giving the music-loving world an Open Invitation with his fifth studio album dropping today (November 1st). Juggling his singing career with acting, writing books, rapping, modeling and tweeting, the 32-year-old entrepreneur is ready to return to his first love (singing), despite an impressive acting resume that is growing longer by the minute.

Tyrese: Alcohol Killed My Childhood

“It’s my proudest album to date,” Tyrese says of Open Invitation. “There’s a lot of your favorite artists out here with great singles. I kept that in mind, going into this album. I wanted to put something together that has a flow and energy with one song to next.” According to Tyrese, he’s put together an album that he says will be good company “on a long road trip,” where you can’t do anything else but just listen.

You’ve been very active on Twitter. How has that made a difference in your career?
Twitter for all of us can be a good thing or a bad thing. As positive as Rev Run is, as much as Diddy promotes Ciroc, we’re all here because people want to hear positivity from us. Some people say we tweet too much. If you don’t like something I say, then don’t follow me. I love putting thoughts and feelings and insights on Twitter. To have that many followers, and not put inspiration out there, is a waste.

And your book is in the same vein, no?
I think all of my tweets set up an interest in my book. Some fans get caught up in the looks and the muscles and the surface and when they follow me on Twitter, they see who I am, and are inspired by the stuff that I tweet.

How would you define your style?
I don’t know, actually. My style changes up a lot. I don’t have one specific style. I wear whatever I’m in the mood to wear.

But your hair never changes.
I mean, it’s really not too much grooming on my side. I just wear a baldhead. I don’t have a lot of facial hair to worry about either. I just love rocking a baldhead.

What’s that like in terms of keeping your baldy up? It doesn’t seem too difficult.
I just cut my own hair, using these clippers called edgers, little gray clippers with a burgundy knob in the front. I cut my hair off, every four or five days. I’ve been cutting my own hair since I was a teenager. I cut my own hair and my face. I’m self-sufficient. All them other cats, they must got big budgets for their own barber, oil and massages. I keep it real simple. Ask MC Hammer, these entourages add up.

So I thought there was more room for error cutting your own hair. Any grooming mistakes?
Um. No. It’s actually way faster for me to cut my hair. They be concerning themselves with hurting me. I be like just give me the clippers. There have been plenty of times, when they’ve hired a barber, and they’ll concern themselves with hurting me, but I’ll just be like ‘just give me the clippers.’ I’ll say, ‘don’t worry, I’m still gonna pay you, but just give me the clippers.’

Tyrese was kicked out of a Delaware radio station for expressing his thoughts on the issue of having liquor stores across the street from elementary schools. “Get them cats out of here … selling alcohol right across from your kids school, homie — put the pressure on them homie … you know how to put pressure on dudes selling in your hood.”

The radio station program director asked Tyrese to leave after that. Tyrese tweeted:

“I just kicked out of a radio station frm a PD who had a problem w/ me speaking on liquor stores that are by elementary schools in Delaware. In 17 years I hv NEVER been kicked out of a radio station.. Because I have a problem w/ liquor stores being across from elementary schools?

I was also told that the PD made them ERASE my interview so that NO ONE could HEAR me SPEAK on the issue of the liqour stores near kids..

Love is love y’all .. When you stand for something.. You will create a shift in the universe.. Salute to all of you for your support!

Tyrese’s “Open Invitation” Isn’t What You Are Expecting!

In a small office at the EMI building in NYC after being served sushi, dumplings and Sake, Bloggers, press and media gathered to listen to Tyrese’s fifth album Open Invitation. The room, adorned with red candles centered on a black piano, gave off an intimate vibe. We huddled in close, some sitting on the floor and some lucky souls in chairs. Tyrese greeted us very personally asking that we do not record the music he was going to play for us, informing us that he had an incident the night before.

With a half-empty glass in his possession, he introduced what he called “my proudest work to date.” We listened attentively as he filled us in on his journey back to music!

“My mentor said something to me, back when I decided to give music a quick break, he said ‘If you want to make God laugh tell him your plan’.” Tyrese struck Box Office success with the “Transformers” series, “Fast & Furious” franchise and “Legion.” Though very profitable, music was calling Tyrese’s heart.

“A revelation came to me, you got four weeks of nothing to do- which never happens. I got a hold of about 14 people, singers, songwriters and producers and I flew them in town. All brand new unestablished producers that I had never worked with specifically but I had worked with indirectly. I was like these are on the folks that are on the list that God sent me, they were all sleeping at my house. We banged out my whole album in four weeks. I had five different production stations set up throughout my house, it became like the old Motown, I called it R&B boot-camp”

Tyrese has strayed from the love ballad/baby-making music maven we have come to love. He attributes his new musical focus on “Benjamin Button syndrome.” The new album is more upbeat and better fit for a cool night out on the town rather than the bedroom–which is exactly what he was going for. “If you listen to songs like “Lately,” I’m 32 now I can sing a song like that now, because I actually do know about love Ive been madly in love before. I have a child but when your 20 years old singing ‘Have I told you I love you?’ it’s a very mature adult contemporary. When I had “Lately” out, Usher had “You Make Me Wanna.” He’s actually doing music his age. He’s in the video dancing, I’m [in the "Lately" video] in all white on the piano making out on some extra grown man sh*t. As soon as I leave the video[set] I’m like ‘man I don’t want to do this sh*t.’ Now that I’ve gotten older I know what I want to look like. I know what type of songs I want to sing. I know what type of songs that move me!

My favorite of the tracks played was “I’m Home.” The hard-hitting but mid-tempo beat was the sexiest of the bunch. “One Night” was very reminiscent of Trey Songz “Invented Sex,” which isn’t a bad thing! “Best In Me” was also a favorite, followed by his first single “I Got A Chick “ featuring Rick Ross and R.Kelly. His current single “Stay” follows the typical R&B rules but because of Tyrese’s strong vocals, is elevated to another level.

Though I loved a few songs (so far) on “Open Invitation,” being the R&B fiend I am, I was hoping for another “Lately” or “How You Gonna Act Like That.” Open Invitation doesn’t deliver that but does offer a more modern Tyrese with less the love.

Tyrese recently shot the music video for “I Gotta Chick” featuring R-Kelly, Tyga and Rick Ross directed by Brazil out in Los Angeles. The leading lady is my good friend Connie Chris aka VH1′s Mz Berry. Rick Ross appears on the remix so I guess we will have to wait and see if he will be in the music video. Tyrese has plans to release his next single “Too Easy” featuring Ludacris soon so stay tuned.

Tyrese Gibson just messed it up for all men during an interview on Wendy Williams‘ talk show. The singer/actor said that men are expected to cheat on their women.

Wendy asked Jody Tyrese, who was on the show promoting his new book How To Get Out Of Your Own Way, why men cheat…

“I don’t have all the answers, but I can say that most mothers raised their daughters to believe that if you cook, clean, thoroughly take care of your man and go all out for your man, that should keep him home. Unfortunately that’s not the truth, but I will say to my daughter when she gets old and starts dating is, if you end up being cheated on, don’t own the cheat. Don’t make the cheat yours. It’s something in that skirt and those legs and whatever the case may be, and [he] decided to dip off. Does he see the value in his woman at home? Yes, but if he ends up dipping off, that spaghetti couldn’t keep him at home.”

Wendy then asked if his wife cheated on him, would she get pass…

“No way. See, it’s expected of men to cheat, even though all men don’t cheat. I can’t just generalize and say all men cheat, but it’s expected because it’s a part of our upbringing[...]no listen if your in high school or in college, if one dude has sex with ten different women he is a hero, he’s the champion of the campus. If one woman has sex with ten different guys, they’re all kind of things in the book right?[…]Its just a part of what instilled in us growing up.”

He talks about the release of two Blockbuster movies “Transformers 3” and “Fast Five,” a book “How To Get Out Of Your Own Way” and album set for a Summer release.

“I live my life by these words: ‘You can’t get points today for yesterday’s game.’ You won MVP last week, OK, get over it. It’s like, there’s another level to this thing and people like Will Smith and Denzel and Rev Run and …[I have a few billion-dollar and multi-billion friends] … these people have really messed up from showing me this life and lifestyle because I know that there’s a-whole-nother level of playing field out there that I can get to. Now, people get complacent. People stop being inspired when they have more than all of their friends. If you do that, then you lose your motivation, because you the highest dude on your playing field. Like, amongst all of my people, I got the most. And if you’re able to say that and feel that, then you could probably get complacent and lose focus on trying to get to the next level, because you have more than all of your friends and family. Mothers Day is here and I must admit we all (well most of us) love our moms to death and beyond. I just have a feeling that these special celebrities suffer from “Mommas Boy” syndrome. Mommas Boy syndrome aka the Baby Boy syndrome is an overwhelming reliance and adoration for ones mom. Classic example- Jody from Baby Boy:

Some Symptoms May Include:

-Living at home with mom when you’re in your 30′s.
-Getting upset when your mom won’t buy you the hottest car or gear from the store.
-Letting your mom run and ruin your relationships.
-Playing “dress-up” in your mothers clothes.
-Listening to and only behaving around their mother.
-Thinking they’re god’s gift to women because their mother told them so.

Now here is all the evidence you will need:

If your mom can talk about your sex tape openly then there is a problem.

Madea is definately a Mommas Boy look how he/she chops it up with Oprah- only moms love Oprah! She/he even gives relationship advice.

Only a mommas boy would get punched in the back of the head an do nothing. He probably called his mom crying when he got inside!

Quincy Jones Readies Tribute Album… To Himself

After ruining “We Are The World” for millions of people last month, legendary producer Quincy Jones is set to ruin even more of his classic productions with his upcoming Soul Bossa Nostra tribute album.

Jones has called on a who’s who of today’s stars to cover some of his classic works, and the list of artists and the songs they are attached to make me want to vomit.

Here’s a few of the biggest offenders:

Akon “Strawberry Letter 23″ (made famous by The Brothers Johnson)
Usher, Robin Thicke, LL Cool J, Trey Songz, Tyrese, Tevin Campbell “Secret Garden” (originally performed by El DeBarge, James Ingram, Al B. Sure!, and Barry White)
Ludacris “Soul Bossa Nova” (aka the Austin Powers theme, and sample source for Luda’s “Number One Spot”)
T-Pain & Robin Thicke “P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)” (originally performed by Michael Jackson)

Now I must say that it’s not all doom and gloom, as Quincy did find some people worthy of the songs they are covering:

Akon’s sacrilegious cover of “Strawberry Letter 23″ will be out on March 24th.

Mourners Say Goodbye To Teddy Pendergrass

Thousands gathered in Philadelphia on Saturday to pay their respects to the late, great Teddy Pendergrass.

Soul singer Teddy Pendergrass’ funeral Saturday was the kind of soaring ceremony that punctuates the end of a larger-than-large life.

A 200-member gospel choir jubilated with high-decibel exhultation, while a band and a sternum-vibrating organ roused the estimated 4,000 people who filled mammoth Enon Tabernacle Baptist Church on Cheltenham Avenue, the biggest African American church in Philadelphia.

In turn, singers Melba Moore, Tyrese Gibson, Bunny Sigler, Gerald Austin, Lyfe Jennings, and Musiq performed songs by Pendergrass, a brawny, seductive baritone who leavened an incandescent sexuality with just enough sensitivity to stir arenas full of women and heat any room in which his music played.

Soul Legend Teddy Pendergrass Dead At 59

“He sounded like hot fudge on cherry vanilla ice cream with all the toppings,” remembered friend and neighbor Dyana Williams, a personality on WRNB-FM (107.9), in an interview last week. “He was delicious, an auditory and visual pleasure – the love man.”

Pendergrass, 59, raised in North Philadelphia and a member of Enon, died Jan. 13 of a protracted illness that followed a diagnosis of colon cancer last year.
