VIBE: The last album didn’t do well in the States. It did better overseas, particularly in Europe. Do you feel more appreciated in Europe?
Kelly Rowland: No, not really. People still compare me to B over there. I said in an interview recently, ‘You know, if you guys would be a little bit more intelligent and ask me about myself we’ll have a much better interview.’ You can’t want a story from me and keep asking me about the past.

When you walked away from that last meeting with Mathew, did you feel an “exhale” moment?
I did, but I also felt like, ‘Oh my God, what have I done?!’ I stayed in the house for two days. I was sad. It was like a funeral. I had to deaden that situation in order to start fresh. That’s a very long time to have the same manager and the same label.

What about your personal relationship with Mathew Knowles. Do you still talk to him?
Mathew sent me flowers for my birthday!

But do you talk to him?
It’s… I respect him above anything.

Speaking of this road we’re going on… Let’s talk about the song “Motivation.” I have to admit, the song went completely over my head. I thought you were talking about working out.
[Laughs] No, honey.

When you heard the song, did you think, This may be too racy for my image?
Not at all. Every woman knows what that feels like—hopefully. But everyone doesn’t expect Kelly to sing about it. This is true. But I just loved the song so much. And yes, I can relate to it. I came into my sexuality while I was recording this album. I can walk into a sex shop now and not worry about what people would say if they saw me in there.

You really do that? Go to sex shops?
Yeah! With friends on the low. I go at the right time. Nighttime. 1 a.m. The really good ones are open that late.

She’s in a relationship with a man right now, so can we talk about that?”

“We can talk about it,” Rose says. “It just has to be written very tastefully because when people think of bisexuals they think of nasty, freaky girls that have threesomes all day.”

“I had a lot of work done to my teeth. Oral surgery, extractions, six, seven, eight root canals,” he tells Erik Parker for Vibe magazine. “Between January to February. Of course for the pain they gave me oxycontin and hydrocodone. And, mind you, on October 13, 2007, I had cut off everything―weed, alcohol. Then I get these pills and I start taking them for the pain at first. And then I’m like, Wait―this shit makes me feel good. And it’s legal. After the pain went away, I kept taking it. I had like five, six prescriptions. So I had, like 80 pills. Everybody else might have a drink or smoke a blunt, I took a pain pill. Times when I had 18-, 20-hour days, I’d take a pain pill. And eventually I developed―I guess―the beginning stages of dependence.”

“My Dad was on me heavy about drugs,” remembers Soulja, slumped on a red two-seater couch, staring straight ahead at nothing in particular. “He found a little sack in my bedroom, but it wasn’t from drugs. I know that people say, “Oh, he’s trying to get a new Lil’ Kim.” I guess people will see in time. Yeah, Nicki’s had flavored wigs on, but besides that it ain’t even the same approach to the writing.

Look out Q, word on the curb is that a company called InterMedia Partners is close to purchasing the trademark of VIBE. InterMedia currently owns the Soul Train catalogue and UPTOWN magazine. If the sale goes through it’s rumored that Len Burnett (pictured above), a former VP of VIBE, would be placed in charge and the brand would indeed relaunch as a website. We’ll see about that. Ha!

Quincy Jones just caught wind of the collapse of the magazine he started-VIBE. And he’s not at all pleased with how things are going down. He said in a statement to EbonyJet.com yesterday that he plans to get his iconic magazine back and keep it alive:

“They just messed my magazine all up, but I’m gonna get it back. You better believe it, I’m'a take it online because print and all that stuff is over.”

He has a point about print being dead. But content is still King. Can VIBE pull it off even if they come back with a strictly online presence and Quincy Jones buys it back? Their latest editions haven’t been what they used to be. But time will tell…

Here’s the memo sent out by the VIBE Music Group CEO Steve Aaron:

“It is with a heavy heart that I share some tough news, VMG is closing down effective today, June 30 due to lack of additional financial investments.

“Unfortunately, over the last several months, a confluence of events has obviously posed VMG to exceedingly serious challenges.

“The collapse of the capital markets has impacted us greatly. Over the past several months, we have actively pursued investment resources while working intensively with our bank to find a solution. But the deal market right now remains very poor and at the end of the day, the lack of investment resources to restructure the huge debt on our small company has made this outcome become a reality.

“The print advertising collapse hit VIBE hard, especially as key ad categories like automotive and fashion, which represented the bulk of our top 10 advertisers, have stopped advertising or gone out of business. It’s also unfortunate that in a recession many companies reduce the multi-cultural campaigns. These facts, coupled with the continuing decline of the music industry not to mention the newsstand wholesaler consolidation in early 2009 all negatively impacted our business in a significant way.

“The relentless economic situation has depressed our growth initiatives on the digital front. To be clear, VMG has made significant improvement in this part of our business, but not at the accelerated pace required to offset the devastating effects of the most severe recession in our lifetime and the accompanying print losses.”

Continuing an unfortunate trend in print publishing, Vibe Magazine is closing its doors after sixteen years of publication.

Vibe magazine, the urban-music magazine founded in 1993 by Quincy Jones, is the latest victim of the media recession. A source with knowledge of the situation tells DailyFinance that the staff has learned the magazine is ceasing publication, and an assistant in the office of editor in chief Danyel Smith confirmed the news. No further information was immediately available. A call to Vibe Media CEO Steve Aaron was not immediately returned, nor was a message left for Smith.

Vibe enjoyed significant success in the late ’90s and early part of this decade as hip hop and R&B became the nation’s predominant forms of pop music. But in recent years the title has fallen on hard times under its new owner, the Wicks Group, which bought it in 2006. In February, it reduced its circulation and publishing frequency, cut salaries and moved employees to a four-day workweek to save money.

Although he is currently incarcerated, one half of Mobb Deep, Prodigy is suing a record company for breach of contract for $30,000. Prodigy says the missed payments have cause his family to suffer holding the company responsible for making them claim foreclosure. “These breaches . . . have put Prodigy’s family in financial peril,” the documents filed last Monday (March 23) in Manhattan Supreme Court in New York said.

In related news, Prodigy recently made headlines after a collection of letters became public letting everyone know his thoughts on Rick Ross and Vibe Magazine. “Now it’s the slavery of our minds covertly,” P wrote. “There’s people out there who get the chills when they hear Rick Ross, like he’s something special. These are the kind of fools we’re dealing with…I was just reading Vibe Magazine’s ‘Best Rapper Alive 2008′ article…Vibe says 920,000 people voted for it. I would personally b*tch slap all 920,000 of these voters if given the opportunity. Who in the f*ck picked Crooked I, Flo Rida and Rich Boy? How did Vibe approve this? In the back of the Vibe, they have a section called ’20 Questions,’ they actually try to imply that The Game’s album LAX is better than 50 Cent’s Massacre and Curtis…Basically people, we have a gang of herbs in positions of power.”

Rumor has it that Gawker has the inside scoop on what’s going on with Quincy Jones’ magazine VIBE. Check it out below:

“A tipster tells us the atmosphere is tense at the Vibe offices—”they may not have enough money to print the March issue” because of a lack of ads.

Executives from the Wicks Group (Private Equity Owners) came to the office on Friday and met with CEO Steve Aaron and Publisher Edgar Hernandez. Things around the office are very tense.

The tipster says that more meetings are scheduled for this afternoon. And they say that the only ads Vibe has booked for the March issue are “Army, Carson Soft Sheen & Jamster”—not even a fifth of the usual number of ads.”

An update from the magazine’s PR firm boldly states the following:

“Any reports that VIBE is having problems printing the upcoming March issue are untrue. In fact, VIBE is releasing its annual “Style” issue featuring Grammy nominated singer Keyshia Cole with two different covers which will hit newsstands everywhere on February 17th. We will also be issuing a press release within the next two weeks with news about VIBE’s continued growth and expansion which includes new staff hires and promotions.”
