Lil’ Wayne graces the cover of XXL July/August 2011 issue. The young Money leader spoke with XXL about the his recording process and selecting tracks for the anticipated Tha Carter IV album in the exclusive interview “Larger Than Life.” Wayne lets it be known that the album is all about him because he is one interesting muthaf*cka. Weezy F. Baby also spoke on retiring soon and from the sounds of things, that may be sooner than we think. Could Lil’ Wayne be planning on retiring after the release of Tha Carter IV album?

Check out the quote below from the interview. XXL’s July/August 2011 issue will hit newsstands nationwide on July 12.

“I’m bowing out still on top,” he says. “I’ma make y’all want me when I retire. I’ma make y’all be like, ‘Nooo!’ I ain’t leaving out this bitch when y’all be like, ‘Yeah, it’s about time, dawg.’ Carter IV might be my last one. I’ma make y’all be like, ‘Fuck!’ Yeah, nigga, I’m gone.”

XXL Magazine is the mecca for all things hip-hop. The respected Mag launched their first Iphone App recently that can be beneficial to any hip-hop lover. Not only does it deliver news, it promotes new artistry. The app allows for record execs to hear submitted music from up-coming musicians. The senior VP of A&R at Island Def Jam says “This app will allow me direct access to artists really looking to be heard.”

“XXL Magazine is proud to announce the launch of their first official and exclusive iPhone app, which features six special functions including a hip-hop news feed, lifestyle trends, “Where They At?” geo-tracker for finding friends, plus special Twitter functions and the ultimate hip-hop trivia.

The free app also features a unique application called “Ready or Not,” which allows consumers to use the iPhone’s voice recorder to upload their own creative 30-second freestyles to be judged by celebrity guest judges such as Lloyd Banks and Sha Money XL, senior VP of A&R at Island Def Jam, to name a few, creating essentially a hip-hop version of “American Idol.

“It’s very hard for a new artist to get discovered even with the Internet as prevalent as it is these days,” says Vanessa Satten, XXL’s Editor-in-Chief. “Singers have American Idol but aspiring rappers have limited outlets. ‘Ready or Not’ lets aspiring rappers get heard by those who can actually help launch their career. Established artists, label A&R executives, XXL editors and industry heavyweights will all be reviewing submissions. We believe this can be a really important tool for hip-hop.” Sha Money XL”

Click here, to download the app

50 Cent and Soulja Boy are featured together on the cover of the November 2010 issue of XXL magazine.

The unlikely duo first paired up on the song “Mean Mug” from Soulja Boy’s upcoming album, The Deandre Way.

From XXLmag.com:

- SB on his connection to 50 Cent: “Being Black, with money, from the hood, struggles, and coming from nothing to something, of course you’re going to share the common struggles. You going to have people hate. You going to have people that change on you, and all that. So of course, watching 50, and him going through what he did—if there wasn’t no 50 Cent, there would be no Soulja Boy. You know what I mean?”

- 50, who has come to SB’s defense on numerous occasions and has taken on the role of mentor to the young Atlanta rapper, can relate. The on-again off-again industry outcast tells XXL Deputy Editor, Rondell Conway, “I’m more comfortable in a space where people are doubting me than when I’m the favorite. They doubted me before. Obviously, I was the only crazy person that believed in me at one point.”

Okay…

But something seems a little off about this cover… What do you think?

“I stress that the incident wasn’t about Taylor personally. And it definitely wasn’t about race. Where I messed up is, at the end of the day, it’s your show, Taylor. It’s your show, MTV,” West explains in XXL’s October 2010 issue, on stands next week.

“The relationship with the public and with your fans is like the relationship with your girlfriend. How could I not, at a certain point, be like, ‘I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have been at the awards show. I’m sorry.’ Not that I don’t deserve to get beat up or change who I am inside, to make sure that that doesn’t happen again.”

During his latest stint in jail, Radric Davis spent much of his time contemplating how he could change his life. The veteran Atlanta rapper known as Gucci Mane had built a tremendous regional following based on his oft-autobiographical songs about partying, drug trafficking and street conflict. But the same lifestyle he rhymed about had repeatedly landed him behind bars, ironically stifling his hopes for national fame.

“I got a lot of ideas together,” he says of the six months he served for violating the terms of his probation, stemming from a 2005 incident in which he beat a promoter with a pool cue. “It was a time for me to refocus. I took it and made the best out of a bad situation.” He devoured all of the inspirational material he could get his hands on, he says, from the Bible and rap magazines to a title from the Chicken Soup for the Soul series.

“As bad as it may sound, I think going to jail was one of the best things that could have ever happened to him, because he really grew up,” says his manager and business partner, Debra Antney. “He had some time to sit back and think.”

VIA BET:

When Mos Def speaks, I suggest you LISTEN! Truthfully, when was the last time Mos Def spoke to the media (well at least as in-depth as his recent XXL interview in the July issue)? Don’t worry, I’ll wait. Yeah, exactly.

So when the big homey, Clover Hope (Twitter.com/Clovito) sat down with Mr. Def for the XXL feature, we knew several things would occur; A.) He’d take the time to inform his advocates why he’s not as accessible as his peers, B.) He’d issue an open hand slap to his cohorts about how they present their art, and C.) His political theories (a lane that some people may not agree with).

But Mos isn’t just talking to talk, he’s got an album to promote – The Ecstatic. (it hits stores June 30th). So clearly, he’s chit chatting for good reason. And since neither you or me can remember the last time we’ve seen Mos talk to the press, let’s dig into the current times- the July Issue of XXL Magazine. Check out Mos’ thoughts on being famous, Hip hop, and Bill Maher, below.

Mos Def on being famous…

“I keep getting rudely reminded that I’m famous. Maybe I keep denying it. I’m talking right now because it’s the time to. There’s nothing wrong with taking a pretty picture or getting your face out there. But for a while in hip hop, it started to feel like that was part of the creative process. And if you wasn’t doing that, that there was some part of the creative process that you was just neglecting that was vital, and uhh, I just disagree with that.”

Mos Def on the content in hip hop today…

“They don’t care about the people. I don’t think they even care that much about themselves. Nobody has to be a holly roller. But you don’t have to put poison in the food ’cause it’s cost-efficient or ’cause its tasty. This is gonna hurt people. And these are critical times for people.”

In stores on May 19th, Slim Shady goes in on quite a few things. Check out the excerpts below:

On His Drug Addiction:

“I wasn’t really mentally. I wasn’t ready to give up drugs. I didn’t really think I had a problem. Basically, I went in, and I came out. I relapsed, and I spent the next three years struggling with it. Also, at that time, I felt like I wanted to pull back, because my drug problem had got so bad. I felt like, Maybe if I take a break, maybe this will help. I started to get into the producer role more…I can still be out there with my music, like with the Re-Up album, but I don’t have to be in the spotlight the whole time.”

On Proof’s Death:

“Everyone felt his loss, from his kids, to his wife, to everyone. But, for some reason, in hindsight, the way I felt was almost like it happened to just me…Maybe at the time I was a little bit selfish with it. I think it kind of hit me so hard. It just blindsided me. I just went into such a dark place that, with everything, the drugs, my thoughts, everything. And the more drugs I consumed, and it was all depressants I was taking, the more depressed I became, the more self-loathing I became…By the way, I’m just now at the point where I’m better talking about it. It took me so long to get out of that place where I couldn’t even speak about it without crying or wanting to cry…Proof was the anchor. He was everything to D12. And not just the group-for me, personally, he was everything.”

On T.I., Lil Wayne & Hip-Hop:

“I stayed up on the music, and obviously I watch TV and saw what was going on. And without naming any name, it just felt like hip-hop was going downhill. And it seemed like kinda fast. You know, in them three years, it was like everybody just cares about the hook and the beat; nobody really cares about substance. But with this new T.I. album, with this new Lil Wayne album of recent, it seems like things are looking a lot better now. You can appreciate Lil Wayne using different words to rhyme and actually rhyming words that you know. Or T.I., where you hear shit and you’re like Whoa, ah, I wish I would have thought of that! You know what I mean? Or you hear all the compound-syllable rhyming and all that. It just seems like now the craft is getting cared about more.”

Timely? Yes. I concede that Jim Jones is the most talked about rapper in the game right now after Kanye West (who is not claiming rap too tough right now). But considering this was probably done before the Christmas brawl with Ne-Yo and his appointment at Koch I can’t get too excited. If he can tell us what cave Cam’ron is sharing with Bin Laden then I might scoop it up.

Asher Roth to the rescue. Roth’s publicist confirmed that the PA rapper was among several passengers who helped detain a man who made a bomb threat during a recent ATL to LAX flight.

Roth was reportedly on his way to Los Angeles to film an appearance on NBC’s “Last Call with Carson Daily” when the incident took place. The Los Angeles Times‘ Blog reported details on the incident.

“The unidentified man was aboard Delta Airlines Flight 110, which was approaching Los Angeles, when he got up and stated he had a bomb,” FBI spokeswoman Laura Eimiller told the LA Times. “There was an altercation with multiple passengers, who ultimately subdued the man with plastic ties. At one point he tried to exit through one of the aircraft doors after the flight landed at LAX.”

The college dropout wants an internship. Kanye West, the self-proclaimed “voice of this generation,” is humbly seeking an internship in the fashion industry.

With his own clothing line, Past Tell, still waiting to come out, almost three years after it was originally supposed to hit stores, Ye hopes to learn more about the design process. He prefers, however, the high-end houses of Louis Vuitton or Raf Simons, according to the New York Times, who spoke with Simons. Simons told the Times that he was “blown away from the planet,” when Ye told him about his interning aspiration.

“I know he’s very serious about this,” Simons said. “I don’t take it as a joke – but how can I imagine him being my intern? It’s a very extreme situation.”

Last week, Ye blogged about wanting to be “the real thing,” and vowed not to be another “celebrity designer.” Though Kanye prides himself as a trendsetter he’s not the first celebrity to take an internship. NHL star Sean Avery of the Dallas Stars, who hopes to become a fashion editor, interned with Vogue Magazine last summer. If fashion students want an internship, now they have to compete with the “Louis Vuitton Don.”

In an interview with XXL Magazine, Queens’ bully – 50 Cent – let loose on his neighboring rival, Nas.

Nas threw a shot on “Queens Get The Money” and you didn’t respond. You getting all Gandhi on us?

50 Cent: Man, Nas is cold as ice. Nas is the block of ice that sunk the Titanic. I didn’t even hear his record. I didn’t even hear what you talking about. I really don’t want to talk about Nas. I think he’s at one of those points to where his career’s finished, to be honest. He’s had some great moments and made good music in the past, but he no longer has the interest of the general public or myself.

50 Cent: The public will tell me that Curtis is a failure. And I sold 700,000 copies the first week. So what do I gotta do? Reach a million at a minimum?

That’s the bar you set. You’re the SoundScan Killer, remember?

50 Cent: Right, but if we’re gonna call that a failure, then somebody identify what a win is for me. All I need to know is what it is and then I’ll go ‘head and go. Musically, from my perspective, Curtis was exactly what I aimed for it to be. Or I wouldn’t have presented it to the public. I listen to my music before I put it out. I’m listening to it and I’m hearing it, and I’m like, ‘Yeah, this is what I wanna do now.’
