Tyga Reveals Album Cover For “Careless World: Rise Of The Last King”

No one in the music business (other than say, maybe his fellow Canadian-native Justin Bieber) has inspired more love and hate in the year 2011  than one Aubrey “Drake” Graham. On one side, his highly anticipated sophomore album Take Care debuted at Number # 1 on Billboard with roughly 631,000 copies sold in its first week.  [To put that in perspective, only his YMCMB boss Lil Wayne and the incomparable Lady Gaga sold more in their first week this year.] His single “Headlines” is undeniably one of the most played songs of the year and there hasn’t been a successful remix in a while that didn’t feature Drizzy crooning on it. So dude clearly has fans. But like with most mega stars at the height of their success, it seems that the haters are working just as hard as he is.

Website The Big Ghost Chronicles made an anonymous star out of a blogger who writes in the voice of the Wutang MC and hates on Drake religiously, assigning him hilarious and scathing aliases like  “Young Garnier Fructis, aka the human croissant.” Charlamagne Tha God from has said publicly that “listening to Drake will make a grown man lactate.” Rumors spread that Common was taking shots at Drake on his song “Sweet” for supposedly dating his ex Serena Williams. While he denied it was directed at Drizzy, he said it was “for whoever the cap fits.” Even Ludacris, who is far from the beefing type, took shots on record at Drake for a perceived slight.

But the hate seems to go beyond the personal, Stan-type beefs. Twitter trending topics like #drakemakes and #drakecrieswhen are the norm on the social network and Spoof Twitter accounts like @drakedointhings (“Drake online shopping for a new set of grapefruit spoons. He isn’t very happy with his current set.) poke fun at the ladies man mc/singer even further. And who could forget the Photoshop of his new album cover that depicts Drake in a less than favorable light.

But why? Why is Drake so much fun to hate on? No other artist in 2011 gets this much negative attention. Is it the lyrics? Is it his upbringing?

The truth is it’s a combination of all of that. The fashion world has seen the gradual feminisation of men (making men the new women-complete with skin tight jeans and man-purses) over the last few years, and the music seems to have followed suit. Kanye West opened the doors again for pretty boy rap and Drake fits the bill perfectly. The sweater wearing son of a Black musician and Jewish mother, the former child actor who played Wheelchair Jimmy on the kids program “Degrassi”, grew up relatively more privileged than—until the last few years—what fans have come to expect from rappers.

His music is full of emotional candor, and in his interviews he seems more interested in flattering women and decorating his bathroom than bragging about his rhyme skills or throwing rims on his truck. And despite his affiliation with other self-proclaimed gangsta rappers, the OVO founder has never actually been shot or shot anybody else. The ladies love him like they used to love LL. He drinks crates of wine and champagne and is clearly not afraid to explore his feminine side (On “Shot For Me he raps: “The way you wear your hair that’s me… the way you walk that’s me.”)

Despite his recent lyrical claims that someone around him or even himself would “catch a body like that…” Drake is clearly the anti-gangster. Yet he keeps his songs full of just enough drug and flossing references to keep his edge-ghetto fabulous minus the ghetto. In DJ Khaled’s “On One” he’s seen brandishing a styrofoam cup, a visual nod to the practice of syrup sipping, regardless of what might actually be in the cup. In an interview with TheUrbandaily Charlamagne observed that Drake, “looked awkward” with the cup and that when he goes down that thug route no one will believe him.

His blatant disregard for masculine standards of old puts him in the running for the Michael Buble of rap. While critics and fans agree his music is undeniably good, he is looked upon as a feral cat returning to the wild despite his domestic lineage. No matter how long his claws grow he’s still…a cat. But when he’s out in the alleys harkening for the days when he rubbed up against his owner’s leg they look at him crazy. His best hope is to sit on the fence and meow into the night because the ladies will be in heat soon enough.

The remarkable part is that both the love and the hate come in equal doses. A girl who obviously loves the dude on a whole other level got Drake’s name tattooed across her forehead, but the tattoo artist who did it thinks she’s the biggest dumbass on the planet and–with limited knowledge of who Drake was–quickly called him “The softest dude in hip-hop.”

That’s probably one of the wildest things I’ve ever seen a fan do. That just shows the love the fan has for him. MC Hammer got hate because he was dancing and then he wore hoodies trying to be hard. You gotta deal with the hate. [Drake] is a great rapper.

When the JumpOffTV lounge crew reviewed Take Care, they created the trending topic “#DrakeMakes” saying that “Drake Makes hold hands at the movies music…take me home to meet your mother music.”

However, what began as a jab at the singer/rapper became an opportunity for his fans to rally for him.

Even his producer Chase-N-Cash chimed in saying, “#Drakemakes millions, ya’ll make blog posts.”

Love him or hate him, Drake seems here to stay…for now anyway. There seems to be no end in sight for the rap star who Big Ghostface says “probably wakes up in the morning, slides down his banister in his silk PJs to play his harp for his cats…”

But all jokes aside, Drake fans go as hard as Beleibers and seem willing to defend him as long as there are haters out there to snap on him. So long as his music stays on point, Drake and his “beauty spa” rap regime will reign supreme. At least until the next DMX or 50 Cent comes along and lowers the Charmin softness quota in rap again.

1. He once held a record in the Guinness Book of World Records.

It’s no secret Busta raps at excessive speeds. I mean really, how many times did you have to listen to his verse on “Look At Me Now” to catch the first three lines of his verse? In 2000, Busta Rhymes was entered into the Guinness Book of World Records for having said the most syllables in one second. The title belonged to voice-over actor, John Moschitta, previously. A little known rapper from Chicago stole the title back from the New York MC a few years later.

2. His rap name comes from a former football player.

When Rhymes began rapping, he went along with the trend of hip-hop. Everybody who was anybody had “Ski” in their rap moniker. Busta Rhymes was no different. His first rap name was Chilly-O-Ski. Soon after giving himself that name, he and plenty of other people decided it was corny. Chuck D of Public Enemy rechristened him Busta Rhymes after the former Minnesota Viking, George “Buster” Rhymes. Could you imagine saying, “Yo, did you hear Chilly-O-Ski’s new song? That’s dope, son!” No? Us either.

3. He’s been featured on more than 300 songs.

Remixes have become the norm in hip-hop. When a hot song drops, we sit and speculate who is going to be on the remix. More often than not, Busta is on the remix. Not only subjected to remixes, most of Rhymes’ biggest hits are tracks where he breezes in, drops a hot 16, and bounces. Case and point, The Pussycat Dolls’ first single, “Don’t Cha” got spins. However, when Busta hopped on it, the track became a Top 5 hit on the Billboard’s Hot 100 Singles chart in 2005. His collaborators range from people like house music sensation, Tiesto, to DMX. His wild energy and preciise delivery are a couple of reasons he lands on everyone’s track.

4. Busta Rhymes has only had one album debut at number one.

Out of the eight discs he has released, five have gone platinum. Out of the five that have gone platinum, none opened at number one. 2006′s The Big Bang is Busta’s only disc to sit atop the album heap for at least a week. Ironically, The Big Bang is one of his lesser selling projects. In spite of hits like “Touch It” and “I Love My Chick,” it’s only sold 613,000 copies after opening week sales of 209,000 copies. That means one third of total sales of this album came from the first week. Yikes!

5. He left Leaders of the New School before getting their record deal.

Busta hit the scene as part of the rap group, Leaders of the New School. If you remember, the group ended on the set of Yo! MTV Raps. Many don’t know Busta and Leaders of the New School broke up and got back together before they got their deal. In an interview with VladTV, Rhymes recounted the tale of getting kicked out for not giving Dinco D and Charlie Brown a ride. “Me and Leaders of the New  School weren’t getting along from before the first album. When you hear “Too Much On My Mind,” I don’t have a verse on it. They started recording while I was on the outs with the group and the person who wanted to sign Leaders of the New School didn’t want to sign us if it wasn’t the same members he saw perform months earlier. They asked me to come back and I agreed, but I had a few stipulations. The main one was that they had to let me use two of my solo songs on the album. So I did “Feminine Fatt” and “Show Me A Hero” by myself because of that.”

6. He was once a clothing designer.

Everyone knows Busta Rhymes can rap and act, but what they scratched their heads about was if he knew anything about designing clothes. Rhymes proved he had a little bit of knowledge when he debuted his clothing line, Bushi, in the late 90s. Like most start up businesses, profit was damn near invisible for the first few years. As the profits continued to find their way to the rapper’s pockets at a snail’s pace, he became increasingly bored with the venture. Rhymes decided to cut his losses and close up shop. He donated the leftover merchandise to local charities and went back to being a rapper full time.

7. Getting a record deal was the reason for growing his dreads.

Since entering the rap world in 1989, Busta has been seen with his trademark dreadlocks. Many attributed his locks to his Jamaican heritage. They would be wrong. The actual reason is far less cultural. When he got his record deal, he decided he wasn’t going top comb or cut his hair because he didn’t have to anymore. He hacked his locks off in 2005 when he left J Records to join Dr. Dre’s Aftermath stable. He said cutting his hair was symbolic of a new beginning at a new label.

8. Busta Rhymes is the Susan Lucci of rap music.

Daytime soap actress, Susan Lucci, is famous for having been nominated for an Emmy 18 times since 1978 and only winning once in 1999. When it comes to rap, Busta is in the same boat. Despite having some of the most creative videos of the 90s, Busta Rhymes has never won a MTV Video Music Award. He’s been nominated 15 times. He is second to Britney Spears in shut outs. She was shut out of 17 nominations until she went home with three trophies in 2008. The Video Music Awards isn’t the only place Busta has been left out. With nine nominations, the Grammys have never recognized Rhymes for his work. This year might be different, with “Look At Me Now” being such a huge record, it’s bound to get nominated in the Best Rap/Sung Collaboration category. He has a pretty good shot at winning that one.

9. He would’ve rather been a member of A Tribe Called Quest.

As mentioned earlier, the relationship between Busta Rhymes and the other members of Leaders of the New School was tumultuous. They fought over everything. Busta’s increasing popularity as a solo act was a big cause for arguments. Rhymes was getting so much attention as a solo act because he was featured on a handful of A Tribe Called Quest records without the other Leaders of the New School members. Busta gave an interview where he stated, “I always wanted to be in Tribe. I would always leave Leaders of the New School after a beef and call Q-Tip to find out what studio they were at. I have so many cameos on Tribe records without Leaders of the New School because Tribe always embraced me when I was going through my frustrations with Leaders of the New School. Tribe always considered me family.”

10. Sean Connery isn’t a fan of Busta’s lateness.

Oscar winning actor, Sean Connery, is notorious for being extremely punctual. When shooting the film, Finding Forrester,  Busta arrived on set two minutes late and was greeted by a late slip from the Scottish actor. Considering Sean Connery also served as one of the film’s producers, Rhymes couldn’t get too beside himself otherwise he would’ve been out of a job. The rapper did like 2pac when he got shot five times, he took the slip and smiled.

“That feels crazy,” he told TheUrbandaily.com of his achievement. “Working with Nicki, she is one of the only female artists in a while that has that kind of potential so it feels incredible.”

Beatz is part of a new wave of young producers (Boi-1da, Lex Luger, et al) taking the industry by storm working right from their computer desktops. “Super Bass” was one of four instrumentals he knocked out on Fruity Loops while visiting family in Orlando.

“I use a lot of 808 elements in the music,” he answers when asked what makes his bass so Kryptonian . “I was trying to mix R&B and Pop at the time. There’s no real trick to the bass.”

In addition to Billboard accolades the song has been covered by American Idol contestant Anoop Desai. While Kane hasn’t heard the cover, he feels it’s a testament to the song’s universal appeal. “I’ve had big records but ‘Super Bass’ connects people from so many different genres. I just take it in and enjoy it.”

As any musician will tell you in 2011, success doesn’t come without its challenges. Kane Beatz was also the producer behind Young Money’s hit, “Bedrock,” and the song has recently become the focus of a lawsuit. [read here].

“I talked to [my management] about it but nothing has come to them in the mail,” he says. “They don’t even know what that is. I think they had the same name or something. But people don’t understand what it is. Wayne didn’t even write that song. The song is based off an old school pick up line, so I’m not sure what the situation is there.”

Unlike some other producers, this may be the only time you hear Kane mention Lil Wayne and legal action in the same sentence. While a list of musicians, including Bangladesh, Playn-N-Skillz and Jim Jonsin are taking Lil Wayne to court for unpaid royalties, Beatz insists that his money is never funny when working with Weezy.

“Me personally I’m managed by G. Roberson so Cash Money has always kept the business 100 with me,” he says. “One thing I know about Wayne is that everybody who works with him still ends up working with him so they must be doing something right.”

After a busy and lucrative 2010 and 2011, Beatz has completed three songs with Nas for his up-coming album and is scouting talent for his label The Building.

“Right now I’ve got JR Get Money, he’s on Lupe Fiasco’s ‘The Show Goes On,’ we gotta new single with Plies and at the same time looking for new outlets. I’m looking for a female artist to invest in.”

Drake must be feeling kind of weird after fondling that young lady on stage so he released some new music on 69 day to his fans. “Marvin’s Room” is a freebie that may or may not appear on  his sophomore album, Take Care, dropping on October 24, 2011.  It’s signature emo Drizzy that has Twitter going crazy right now.

According to RapRadar.com the song was recorded at Marvin’s Room recording studios.
