It’s not often that hip-hop music fans get an opportunity to wear a piece of history, but thanks to the pioneers behind the Sedgwick & Cedar clothing like that is now a reality.

Founded in recognition of hip-hop’s birthplace, 1520 Sedgwick Ave in the Bronx, the first iteration of the line featured vintage flyers from the very first parties thrown by hip-hop’s vanguard like Afrika Bambaataa and Kool Herc.

It is the only clothing line that directly involves hip-hop’s pioneers and pays them royalties for their contributions.

“They are helping us preserve the  culture of hip-hop,” says DJ Kool Herc who DJ’d those first parties at Sedgwick & Cedar and worked to have it declared a historic landmark. “Hip-Hop is about music, fashion and a way of life.”

This year they are re-launching the line featuring photographs of classic hip-hop moments taken by the legendary Joe Conzo.

“I’m the man many say took Hip-Hop’s first baby pictures,” says Conzo, who was front and center for classic moments like the battle between the Cold Crush Brothers and The Fantastic Romantic Five in 1981. “That was the greatest battle in Hip-Hop history.”

The Urban Daily was in the building as Grandmaster Caz, Melle Mel, Kool Herc, Grandwizzard Theodore, Busy Bee and many more gathered to celebrate the return of Sedgwick & Cedar. Check out our once in a lifetime meeting with Hip-Hop’s pioneers as they discuss bringing their achievements to the masses.
