BET Denounces Lil Wayne Performance, Drake Apologizes
BET has expressed remorse over a performance by Lil Wayne, Drake and Young Money[CLICK TO WATCH] Records that involved underage girls during songs “Best I Ever Had” and “Every Girl.”
The songs, which have overt sexual references, were performed during the Sunday BET Awards ‘09 show as a bevy of young girls danced on stage. The group of girls consisted of Lil Wayne’s daughters and her friends.
In an exclusive statement, BET has responded to the criticism and the public outcry over the segment.
“BET Networks deeply regrets the performance by Young Money at the BET AWARDS ’09 (featuring Lil Wayne, Drake, Gudda Gudda and Mack Maine),” a BET representative told AllHipHop.com exclusively. “Elements of the performance were unplanned and should not have happened.”
In the aftermath of the show, many have expressed outrage over the outing by Young Money, which was set amid a show dedicated to the late Michael Jackson.

Activist and filmmaker Byron Hurt lambasted the network earlier in the week in an open letter to Debra Lee, the President and Chief Executive Officer of BET Holdings, Inc.
“In a culture where one out of four girls and women are either raped or sexually assaulted – and where manipulative men routinely traffic vulnerable women into the sex industry – it is not okay that BET allowed this to happen,” Hurt said. “BET owes its entire audience – particularly girls and women around the world – an apology for its failure to intervene.” [Read His Full Statement HERE]
A representative said generally the company has found such opinions useful.
“We value and appreciate the feedback from our viewers and have edited Young Money’s performance for all BET Awards ’09 encore presentations.”
Drake has apologized and taken responsibility for the performance, admitting it was in poor taste.
“That…was a terrible idea that I’ll never do to myself again. But I was being pressed from different areas to perform, and I think what really happened at the BET Awards is with the passing of Mike, the climate really changed, as far as the award show goes,” he told Complex. “I don’t think it called for us to perform “Every Girl” and “Always Strapped,”…it was just timed very poorly and it definitely wasn’t planned like that…To anyone who was offended, my personal apologies, it wasn’t intended to offend anybody.”
Drake followed up that performance by releasing the video to “Best I Ever Had” that has many of his female fans crying foul for some over-the-top sexuality. Drake responded to that criticism as well {click to read].

« Previous 1 2 3 4 Next »I can’t beleive BET is still even around, ass backwards channel that promotes the water melon fried chicken syndrome!
get over it they were not out there as part of the act they were out there as family and no doubt they listened to their songs. b.e.t. needs to get off their high horse hell they barely play a rap video. and i don’t hear them complaining on 106 and park when them lil girls be singing and dancing in their audience and swooning over every actor singer that comes out there…some people who don’t listen to rap or even watch bet need to go back to their opera or country and let b.e.t. do what it stands for entertain the black community
I was wondering why the kids on stage dancing like video girls. that is not an image that BET should not be showing. I am not a lil wayne fan but he should have had better judgement than that. It looked rediculous and classless considering the subject of the show. I used to atch BET but now i just can’t it still shows the same materialistic antics of rap and R&B. Well he is the biggest rapper out there so he can do what he wants.
I honestly feel that since QJ left BET is going down.I understand that change is good but I think there needs to be another one and fast…
I blame no one but the owner due to them being the top of the chain.
I feel bad for BET i know that performance was last minute but AS far as his videos they are not n i hope BET does not play his videos thanx to the love of dance videos have gotten a lil cleaner n this new comer DRAKE doesnt need to start up the freak nasty videos i mean who does he think he is uncle luke?
Funny how the condemned, tries to condemn other. BET or Black EVIL Entertainment can go to hell. BET mmakes u stupid, Im doing fine enteratining myself with no cable.
if elements of the performance were unplanned then BET has a long way to go on controlling their network. i dont buy that they hadn’t planned it. I dont think drake should have been the one to apologize… more so Lil Wayne… thinking he’s immortal and crap. Dont get me wrong i believe he’s a very successful artist but his morals and values are but a distant memory lost behind all the drugs, liquor, money and sex.
what people fail to realize is that BET is also owned my MTV and all of them lol so yea its going to suck….but anyways you spend money on a concert (leisure), s**t is either going to go ur way or it isn’t…I’m not understanding the big fuss I dont understand the need to spend money to go see this person perform the same song on the radio, ur tv, ur cd, dvd, etc lol (concerts and ish like this are pointless) but if u want to spend your money then thats your fault….as far as drakes music video i am very mad that kanye would do this s**t, 1 of the only people in the game now that has his own style and everything, people messing up his first video! poor drake, but w/e i still support him
This performance was done in Poor taste. BET should have known, and I am sure it was not a surprise to this dwindling network. At least Drake stepped up, all others are just fools.
Lil Wayne is laughing all the way to the bank because consumers pay him for this kind of garbage.
Ok wats da talk about 1/2 the people that watch the show have lil girls & put $ on it that they kno the lyrics & was dancing…get real kids listen to wat they talk about no grown woman really play lil wayne (they r out there) but fa real I dnt see the difference between playing on radio & dancing on stage wit the artist & they were is kids! Whoa!!
Damn some of ya’ll need to be readin a dictionary. Commentin, using words you cant even spell. Smh
Everbody knows bewt has been sucking every since that girl started datina lisa raye’s ol man and A.j. left. They sholdv’e known that some trife ish was bound to happen.Get STARZ.
erry1 dat complain’d bout diz are no better if dey aint change da channel but watched for shyt to bish at. ..way to go complainerz.. .next time urse ya free choice to change da channel. .and ionno y ppl though it was gone be off da chain. ..lmfao. .smart azzes. .dey trick’d yall.. .and quit bish’n to BET and bish to Viacom. ..
Black Miss just said a mouthful
Uhm, lets see. The white dude brought BET. This is what happens when we sell our TV network to a greedy white man. He doesn’t care. He just makes money off the “Hip Hop Buffoonery”. Wake up Black People.
The BET awards were flat out terrible…But they didn’t let me down…I mean seriously why are ppl so surprised by the lack of moral structure and celebrities…So, Lil’ Wayne performed a explicit crappie song and every word had to bleeped out…BIG DEAL…he is the hottest rapper out right now…BET would be fools not to showcase him…Nothing is going to change when it seems like its getting worse…The name of the game is ratings and BET scored…Not even a well written letter can change that…But hey what do I know I’m just a small city nobody from Nebraska
Where were all the checks and balances for the shows’ content? SOMEBODY approved and signed off on it! They’re making the artist a scapegoat since the show’s producer had to be the one to select and okay it with the artist’s management team. Drake has no power over what he records. He’s simply the guinea pig being pimped and paid to play you–the listener and music buying public!
Also, look at the even more sinister picture–the subliminal message contained within a heavy and catchy beat! AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases won’t go away…because it’s not supposed to! SEX SELLS and the sad casualty are our children and naive, young and quite misinformed adults…
The problem is…it’s the UNDER aged girls who know all the words to these deplorable songs and gyrate to them! These are the same girls we used to term “fast assed” back in the day and usually the one’s who end up either pregnant (w/several kids), drinking or drugging heavily and is generally of low self esteem because she thought sex equaled love.
Forget anger over a performance. There needs to be anger expressed at these record companies who purposely expose our youngster’s to this type of music…with permission. THAT’s where the power really lies!
What the hell! those girls hear those songs on the radio everyday!Hell Lil Wayne daughter probably was in the studio when he recorded the damn song.Who do you think the target audience for the song is? And um sure Drake dosen’t have a fan over 17.Don’t blame BET.Blame society as a whole because the people are who they cater to.
That was just terrible. it is horrible and very distrubing. To have his own child up there for a song like that. A very poor descision on BET for allowing to let this happen. It just goes to show you how screwed up this world is becoming….
BET does a poor job in everything they because they are trying to please the masses which is impossible to do. Unfortunately you have fools running the shows that let anything go especially when it is on BET because they expect black people to be ok with it. The awards were a mess. They could have a n appropriate tribute to MJ with the already scheduled performances. They let it get out of hand and it turned into a mess. I am sure Janet was mortified before she walked out onto that stage. Just another dissappointment that should have been a strong moment for BET. I never watch the BET awards for this simple reason, it’s always trashy, but I wanted to see how were they going pay tribute to MJ.
YEA DAT SHYT WAT PATHETIC…NIGGA HOW U GO HAVE UR CHILD NAD OTHER CHILDREN ON STAGE WITH U N U RAPIN BOUT F**KIN EVERY GIRL N THE WORLD…R U ANUTHA R. KELLY? NIGGA NO…U WRONG 4 DAT SHYT N DRAKE U JUST NOW C**IN OUT WITH UR OWN SHYT N U F**KIN UP ALREADY…BET SHOULDVE KNOWN WAT SONGS THEY WERE GOIN TO PERFORM N THE PERFORMANCE TOO…HIW U NOT GO KNOW WATS GOIN ON DURING A LIVE SHOW…N IN THE REHEARSALS TOO? DATS BULLSHYT IF YA ASK ME
I was looking forward to their performance but was pretty surprised to see what i saw. Why the hell would you have your own daughter and her friends on stage with you while performing a song like “every girl”? And if you hear the album or unedited version you would really understand what i”m talking bout. As must respect i have for Wayne and his progession as a artist i think thats was just f**ked up parenting on his behalf and what the hell was toya doin besides trying to advertise her and tiny”s show when this was going on? people should be mad at both even though to her defense maybe she didnt know that wayne was gonna have their daughter onstage with them. But got damn that wasnt pleasant site to see at all!!! Poor taste by them all!
i agree that they never should have had the underage girls on the stage… but to re-do a whole award show to make it in memory of somebody at the last minute?…come on now they didnt do that for anybody else that passed away, M.J shouldnt have gotten special treatment
