I’m saying that what should be in the music is not what is happening in the ‘hood’. We already know what’s going in the ‘hood’ . I lve in the hood too. Sometimes, we as people need to create an image for ourselves and ride that image for awhile. I understand and respect where you’re coming from…I’m just on a level in my life of not judging anyone.

There’s nothing wrong with acknowledging or speaking out on certain behavior…but there’s a way to do it/speak out on it.
There’s a way to give healthy critism without condemnation. With condemnation…you become judgemental. And remember…only God can judge.

Example: There are ways I see from Lil Wayne, Keyshia Cole’s family, etc…ways I would never act. But who am I to judge them? Because I’m afraid of people comparing me to them?

I can’t compare to them because my pain has never been that deep.

When they behave that way…how do I know they are not happy in their spirit that they’re alive/overcome their life’s biggest obstacle? Or maybe they don’t know a more healthy way to express themselves?

Life’s about finding a healthy balance.

There are some people who move away from other black people and refuse to speak with/be involved with another black person for just the reasons you pose. Are those actions right? No they’re not.

Ask yourself…have you ever yelled at someone?
Why? What methods did you take change that behavior? Who helped you?
Was it something you were ALLOWED to grow from? Were you in the public eye with your behavior?

They watch Tv, they go to movies, listen to music at school, etc., all out of earshot of you–the parent. So they are influenced when you least expect them to be. As I said before, I have a 17yr old. I strongly believe she would not bring home Lil Wayne…but let’s not get it twisted. I have faith in the way I raise her…so if she brings him home…there’s some things about him that maybe I need to take the time to get to know.

I’ve lived in Japan…where the Asian culture have a true stereotype of black culture. And when the Japanese thought all I could do was sing a rap/R&B song…I jumped on the mic and sang “Crazy” a country song by Patsy Cline. And received a room full of applause.

Lil’ Wayne is a role model, whether he accepts it or not. He is. He may call himself an entertainer, but how do these young people, who listen to his music see him? Look at what’s going on in our communities. Doesn’t life imitate art, although it used be the other way around? All the killing, all of the disrespect for our women and each other, how our young men determine whether or not lightskinned Black women are more beautiful than darker skinned Black women (although they are both just as beautiful),how our young women see themselves, etc. is all pushed in the music. And as far as I can see, that’s what is happenning in real life. And as far as you showing these Japanese that you weren’t what they thought. Their conclusion is you are an exception, not the rule. They still think of us based upon what they see in these music videos, Tv and Movies. That’s real.

J Smit 4041, by the way, what you’re describing as to your daughter, is an indiviual thing. It’s beautiful. But I’m talking about the collective group of our race. And I do get it. I’ve lived in the ‘hood’ all of my life and I used to do some of the madness that’s taking place, but I knew even then, it was wrong. And some point (17 yrs old) I changed it. “When a child you do childish things, when you become a man, you put away childish things”. So I do get it. What I’m saying is we all need to get it. I never stated you’ve gone off on anybody…but what I am saying is there are ways that other people may have handled that situation differently. I believe in Eloquence not only in how you handle situations, but also eloquence in how you present them.

Good Example: The LilWayne cup incident…I wouldn’t have taken it as far as he did by stating,”I don’t care if there’s Heroin in my cup!”
I personally wouldn’t have taken it that far…but it doesn’t take away from the fact of what he said is right…it’s nobody’s business.

Sometimes we get soooo caught up in the message that we forget the messenger is human…flawed.

And that goes back to the way I raise my child…to understand the Messenger can and may be flawed…but the message stands…good/bad! We have the right and privilege to interpret&live our life by any means we choose.

JSmit4041, I love you spirit. But our ancient Afrikan ancestors gave RIGHT AND WRONG to the world. So at some point he has to change. Only he can do that. And i’m sure he knows that his behavior isn’t correct, but he feels like he can do whatever he wants. To some degree, he is correct, he can. But that doesn’t mean we have to accept it. If we, as a community, say to him, Lil’ Wayne your behavior is unacceptable, then maybe he will change. But somehow I doubt it , unless something terrible happens to him. Once I changed, the people of my community saw that change in me and I know I inspired others to do the same. I had been a Black Panther at age 15 and converted to Islam at the age of 20 (and did’nt have to go to prison to see the error of my ways either) . So I have been the change I want others to be. No, they don’t have to become Muslim, not at all. But good behavior is good, no matter how you slice it.

OlatunjiM, look hear if my sister, neice or anyone I know marries a Lil Wayne type guy thats their feel will and their relationship. Nope you can not be with your kids 24/7 and if you as a parent did the right thing then your kid/s will not sweat the stupity out here. The young man is making money legally and not locked up. That’s about all the positive I see. You can’t blame him for how he is because he’s a product of his environment of how and where he grew up. Every generation had a Lil Wayne, but having children by different women where the child will never know what it’s like to come home to a mom and dad or know what it’s like to have dinner at home with mom and dad hurts the child. Being able to provide for the child financially, great, but if anybody thinks that’s enough, keep rapping.
