Black history month start in the school house; and then it varies to (bet), a lot of times I can be turn off by contiuning to teach through television. I don’t think it will stop though; I hate to be a brag about were we want to be heading; daily lives are way more important. One thing I know I get aggravated about is how the youth will speak not knowing who know more black history than they do.

#1. He’s absolutely right. We don’t need that month anymore. It was well for its time, but Black history should be a matter of being taught it daily. There is absolutly no need for that archaic act in this day and age.
#2. Black history month isn’t even taken seriously anymore. My daughters do not learn black history during that month in school, the most I have heard them speak about learning anything about black ppl in school was during the election/inauguration when they incorporated Obama’s inauguration with a history lesson. It’s a good thing I teach them at home, because I am also tired of hearing the same names paraded out for Black history, like they were the only key persons in the movement for equal rights, when there were sooo many people, that are overlooked and ignored.

I agree with him. Black History is American History. It should be taught with just as much fervor as any history subject. Besides, do we really see a difference during Black History Month in the amount of history that is taught and geared towards our pasts? No.. No we don’t. In fact. i goes unnoticed until the very end of the month. It is time that we see people as people. Yes we all have a significant past, a past that shapes who we are today. But we also have to learn to move beyond or past to achieve are dreams. It should only be fuel to and for success.

If to stop talking about something was the way to end it, the world would be a much better place. And Black History Month is not limiting as many here would beleive. I hear what every1 is saying but black history month is still necessary b/c in many areas that is the only time they talk about black history. The is also hispanic heritage month and other months dedicated to subjects that range from women’s suffrage to hip hop history. Black history month is the most noted one however. Racism didn’t stop until we talked about it and now that the president is black race is out in the open in a more public forum than ever before. There r things we still need to talk about hence the Rev. Wright controversy that white ppl could not understand. Talking is how we get past problems but i do see where Freeman is coming from. So both arguments hold water.

Well in Morgan Freeman’s defense he’s right if we focus on celebrating our history during ONE month only it becomes pointless like giving gifts on christmas has now made the idea behind the gift giving pointless we SHOULD celebrate our heritage but lets be honest NO one here can tell me truly what our HERITAGE really is so it’s just a somber reminder that we dont really know who we are as a people but we still cling to our past…if you were born in America you are an American. Remember to celebrate “any” chosen day, month, or holiday is first and foremost an individual choice. When Dr. Carter G. Woodson established Negro History Week, he merely did so to honor Negro people. Feb. has 28/29 days to recognize a race of people and their contributions, if you choose to do so. Ignore the dogmas, choose to exercise your “free will” to think, do and act.

Before we can think about black (history)-history meaning [in the past], we should think about the future of black education. I find it funny how we as black people forget that before there was black history month there was no history at all. I learned alot about my people do to black history month. So for u who say he is right . i have something to ask u. Are the school systems better now or when we was going to school? Also are the parents better at teaching there children now then when we was at school?So where do the children who parents have better things to do like party, get high, work 12 hour a day to pay the bills,etc. where do they learn our history at? Morgan freeman is absolutely right why should the suffering and accomplishments of African Americans be singled out to only a month. The only reason why there is even a black history month, is so that the government can give the black people something to chew on so they can’t raise hell about other holidays that are more geared towards white people. Hmmmm I never thought of it that way and it’s soooo true if it weren’t for our ancestors contributions in the past America would definitely not be what it is today. And of course we are Americans like everyone else, BUT the issue lies within the fact when American History is taught (or at least this goes for where I live) Blacks are excluded! what doesn’t surprise me is that this video is old, or that such a prestigious African American figure is disgusted by the celebration of black history in on month. I should be realized that African American history is part of American history just like Native Americans are… nothing should be left out the textbooks. What I find extremely odd, is the fact that when you refer to a Jewish person as white they say they are Jewish, as to separate themselves from being white… It makes me wonder if they will check the box for other in next years census… or do they count themselves white when it come to “technicality”.

I think there was a time when we did need Black history month. When i was in school this is the only way we would learn and hear about our past great leaders. The schools had and still have no history in their books about us, BUT, I do agree with Mr. Freeman. What purpose do we need it now. Today we can research the truth about our people on the net, we don’t need to be taught about it in our schools because they will not tell us the truth anyway. Plus, why continue to limit our history to one month and the shortest month in the year as well.

I say be proud of who you are, and learn the history of your people. This way you wont have people telling you that this is your month!

I think he is wrong and is looking at life now and not thur the eyes of the people who set this month up. It was design to get the country to take one mouth and speak about black peole and what we did to make this country great. And talk about more the us being slaves. I don’t believe Morgan was stating that there is anything wrong about Black History or that he is repudiating black history. Quite simply it is the fabric of America. Everything is built off of it. To relegate it to one simple month is an injustice.

America has spent money and time to denounce the importance of the struggle of Black people and people of color. Black History was a step to say hey if we give you this will you be happy. It was good for a time. However, we are moving beyond the simplicity of a moment’s recognition.
