When she needs a self-esteem boost, Raven-Symoné can count on her biggest fan: her mom.

She’ll call me and say, ‘You’re very pretty,’” says the former That’s So Raven star. “I’m like, ‘Thanks, Mommy!’ and that’s my confidence for the day.”

On Thursday, the singer-actress will be helping to boost some of her young fans’ confidence when she hosts a hundred 11- and 12-year-old girls at a Dove-sponsored self-esteem workshop in Cape May, N.J.

It’s going to be so much fun,” the 23-year-old, who’s been working on her fifth album, tells People. “We want to build their self-esteem and give them tools to face the world the next day without us there.”

The singer-actress has experienced her share of criticism – especially from online “haters” – for her body, which she’s called “thick and fabulous.”

Handling the Critics

People come up to me and have certain words for me, but you know what I do? I say, ‘I’m healthy, I exercise, I believe in myself, and I think I’m beautiful,’ ” she says. “You just have to learn how to transform the pressures into something that doesn’t soak into you on a personal level. You see it, you breathe past it, you don’t let it sink into your self-esteem.”

And to enforce her positive mantra, if something’s got her down, Raven has a simple technique. “At the end of the day I’ll call my best friend and yell and scream and get it out,” she says. “And the next morning, it’s out of my system.”

YO I WILL SAY IT BEFORE I WILL SAY IT AGAIN…IF GOD WANTED US TO MADE IN HIS IMAGE AND HIS LIKENESS. AND LETS FACE IN ORDER TO DO THAT, HE HAD TO MAKE EVERYONE TO LOOK DIFFERENT…JUST LIKE HIM MADE ME TO BE LIGHT AND AVERAGE…I WISH I COULD LOOK MORE MUSCULAR BUT THIS IS AS BIG AS EVER GET… NEVER GET SIZE IN MY ARMS…AND I AM OK WITH THAT…IM BUILT FOR SPEED AS WELL AS STRENGTH…BUT I AM PERFECTLY MADE AND LOVED. I HOPE THAT RAVEN KNOWS THE SAME…SHE IS AN AMAZING LOOKING WOMAN, AND SHOOT SHE IS PRETTIER THAN MOST SKINNY GIRLS…AND LETS FACE IT..

WHATS THE POINT OF HAVING A GRILL AND NOT HAVING ANY MEAT ON THE BARBIE…

IN MY HUMBLE OPINION…IF IT COUNTS…I RATHER HAVE A THICK SISTER THAT IS HEALTHY BLACK WOMAN THEN A SKINNY WOMAN WHO LOOKS LIKE A SKELETON

People (HOLLYWOOD) need to realize God made us all different and every body is not meant to bare a “skeletal” frame. Some women are going to be volumptuous or curvaceous! Why must they be rediculed for that??? Raven is a young, intelligent, successful and beautiful woman. I have adored her since she was little “Olivia” on the Cosby’s :) . I have learned to embrace my curves and it is refreshing to see more women doing the same. Keep doing your thing Raven and God Bless.

I have followed Raven’s career we both were babies. lol! (I’m 24 yrs old!) I think she is beautiful inside and out! She is a positive, independent young woman. You would think that many ppl would aspire to be more like her instead of criticize her for silly things as weight. Now on that topic, her body is fine and healthy. Don’t change, girl! :)

Now, what seems to be the problem? We complain when girls are too skinny. We complain when they are obese. Raven just seems to have developed in places most other girls/young ladies have too. If her genes call for her to be thick……..SO BE IT!

Maaannn! I dont see a problem, she still going strong. She doesnt cause problems or anthing negitive. She is doing naturally what younger African-american women do… Grow into a Nice, Thick, Deliciuos black women! whew! i need a moment.. LOL But really its kind of sad that Hollywood (in general) seems to focus on African-american women as if this (being thick) is a problem…but then it hasnt stopped actors like Queen and J.Hudson i doubt it would stop Raven.

Way to go Raven—I knew from the beginning of your career that you would turn out to be a wonderful role model for young women as yourself. Mr. Cosby knew back then that you would be an awesome person I believe long before you knew it.
    Keep up the good work!

You go, Raven. More people, especially our young people, need to hear this.
