Hot on the heels of the announcement that the Xbox brand had its most successful holiday season ever in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, VentureBeat.com is reporting that the Xbox 360 passed the 28 million units sold mark worldwide. Not only that, but Microsoft is saying that Xbox Live expanded its number of “active members” from 14 million before the holidays to more than 17 million after.

Those 17 million members have reportedly spent more than $1 billion on Xbox Live since 2005 with this holiday season’s heaviest usage coming between Christmas and New Years with more than 1.4 million concurrent members online. To see what people were playing, click here.

Microsoft attributes the system’s newfound successes to the new Avatar-fueled interface known as the New Xbox Experience. NXE also brought gamers the Netflix streaming service, said to be “one of the most popular new features.
