Rapper Queen Pen is taking a stand against domestic violence. On January 16, the emcee will hold a press conference to ask for support from the New York City community and to ask for change in legislation.

According to a press release sent out yesterday, Monday, January 5, the event press conference will be held by Queen Pen, and will feature appearances from New York Senator Eric Adams, former Knick John Starks, Lil Mama and Persia whom people may remember as the contestant on Vh1’s White Rapper Show. The event will be held at the Denim Lounge in Brooklyn at 4 p.m.

The release also notes statistics to back the campaign for change.

The New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services has issued a report that lists 58% of all female homicide victims are at the hands of domestic violence,” the report reads.

The matter is one that is close to Queen Pen, who was a victim to domestic violence. According to Pen, she faced abuse too many times and realized change was needed on one occasion when she called the police.

It took 31 minutes for police to respond to a 911 call. If my life is taken away or I can’t provide for my children, who’s going to take care of them?” she says in the statement.

Persia was in the news after being arrested last year, but she’s adament that the unregistered weapon found in her vehicle was there for protection from abusive men in her life.

I was involved in an abusive relationship which led to him trying to kill me. I felt I had no choice but to protect myself,” she adds to the release, which also says her weapon was to protect herself in said abusive relationship. “I’m advocating in hopes that the laws can be in favor to the abused and we won’t have to fear for our lives any longer.”

Queen Pen has remained active through the years. After being a Grammy-nominated artist and an author, Pen has continued working with at risk youth and speaking in places like juvenile centers, inner city schools and group homes. She has also started Silent Cries, an organization against domestic violence.
