“Be careful what you wish for.”

That should’ve been in the back of our minds when we once said that we miss hip-hop that scared white America, because it’s here.  And it’s probably gonna scare black America too.

Odd Future aka Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All (or OFWGKTA for “short”) are a group of skateboard punks from Los Angeles. None of them over the age of 21.  Their music is vulgar, blasphemous, angry, sociopathic, violent, gross, super-NSFW, and a few hundred other not-so-nice adjectives that we don’t have time to write.  But despite all of this, they’ve already made an extremely memorable appearance late night television, been written up by some of the “cool” blogs and magazines, signed on to perform at the annual Coachella festival, and they can claim guys like Mos Def, Kanye West and The Roots as big fans.

It’s easy to dismiss the 11 member crew as just being the latest to use shock value for attention, there’s something about their music and the almost cult-like grassroots movement that has allowed them to sell out shows in New York and London that keeps us intrigued and wanting to know more.

The best way is to just dig into the music, the majority of it given away as free downloads on their website.  There’s plenty of it.  Eighteen albums worth of material – solo albums, group projects, mixtapes.  Given the massive amount of music to wade through, it’s difficult to figure out where to start.

We stumbled across “The Old Person’s Download Guide To Odd Future” on DeePhunk’s Tumblr blog. The NYC-based club promoter gives OFWGKTA newbies a starter course in the Wolf Gang:

1) Tyler, The Creator – Bastard

This is probably the most stellar project flying under the OFWGKTA banner which is fitting because it is the solo offering from Odd Future’s de facto H.N.I.C. Tyler. Very raw, somewhat sloppy and ADD as hell…but a beautiful mess. This kid has so much talent he kinda just throws it up digitally and lets you sort things out on your own. His production software was stretched to its furthest limits.

2) Earl Sweatshirt – EARL

By far my favorite Odd Future album, hands down. Meet Earl. A sixteen year-old emo kid who vents, daydreams about unrest and paints morbid imagery with IMPECCABLE rhyme skills. A “word nerd” as my homie once referred to him as. EARL is completely produced by Tyler, the Creator. I can’t count the number of consecutive times I played this when I first found it. At the time of this post, Earl has been mysteriously MIA for a lenghty period, which makes EARL even that more interesting. You may come across the “FREE EARL” slogan more often than none if you keep doing your OFWGKTA research. It’s going to be bonkers when this kid finally gets to join the rest of his brethren for a live show.

3) Domo Genesis – Rolling Papers

If you have a bunch of rambunctious yet creative kids from LA, there is undoubtedly going to be a stoner amongst them. That’s Domo (pronounced Dah-mo). If the title doesn’t give you a hint as to what was the driving force behind the music on this album, then you truly live a sheltered life, dude.

4) Odd Future – Radical

Having fun yet? Yeah? SWAG. No? Well f*ck you. Here’s the entire crew going apesh*t mixtape-style. And don’t you dare call the cops.

5) Jet Age of Tomorrow (aka The Super 3) – Journey to the 5th Echelon

I’ve never dropped acid or any other sort of mild-altering hallucinogen. And I don’t want to. But I would imagine that this is what the soundtrack would be if I did and someone wanted to document it. “Trippy” isn’t even a strong enough word to describe this. Don’t operate any heavy machinery to this one.
