The husband and father of two boys has just gotten off the road promoting his first solo project Charity Starts At Home. After recording four albums as part of the rap group Little Brother and three more singing with the Grammy nominated group The Foreign Exchange, Phonte was finally ready to go it alone.

“The whole purpose of the album was setting the stage musically and give people a place to start at. I had to do something that brought everything home, for lack of a better word. It’s always a little scary [when] you realize that you’re truly starting over. Just because people know your records doesn’t mean they know you. A lot of people are hearing me for the first time. So me going out solo is me hitting reset on the past.”

What have you learned about your personal style while on the road?

I wear stuff that’s more my size now. I don’t do the big 5X white tees anymore. I rock clothes that are more fitted. When you’re young a lot of bigger guys make the mistake of buying our clothes too big, thinking you’re covering up your weight. But it really makes you look bigger. You accentuate the good things about your body.

When did you first grow facial hair?

I was probably 16 or 17 when I got the makings of a mustache. I thought it was so great. [But] The men in my family, we really don’t grow beards well. Full beards don’t really grow. I had my facial hair kind of wooly back in 2008. I had the Anthony Hamilton struggle beard going but my joint wasn’t quite connecting so I said “I gotta cut this.” Now I just keep it all the way clean. I have the mustache and a little hair on the chin.”

What’s a grooming suggestion you’ve gotten from a woman?

Lately I’ve been growing my hair out and I didn’t even do it intentionally. I’d go to the barbershop and tell them to just line me up. After two months of that I had a head full of hair. Normally I keep it short. But the women really like the hair now. At all the shows the women wanna touch it. Some women like the scruffy look.
