The luxury car company Acura just landed themselves in some mess.
Acura had a Super Bowl commercial that featured Jerry Seinfeld and Jay Leno trying to convince a potential Acura customer to allow one of them to buy his Acura off him. In the clip, a fairly light skinned black man plays the role of the car salesman. The commercial aired and everything was all good until the casting call sheet for the role of the car salesman hit the internet.
The casting document calls for a “nice looking, not too dark” African American actor. An actor who didn’t fit the part was pissed all the way off and took a photo of the call sheet. A person who was associated with the casting said the complexion restriction had to do with the lighting and special effects would get too tricky.
But isn’t the guy they went with on the darker hued side? Check the commercial and casting call sheet below.
UPDATE: Acura recently apologized for the “not too dark” casting call sheet. Though reps at Acura said they weren’t aware of of the casting agency’s description of the actors they were looking for. However, Acura still issued a mea culpa.
“We apologize to anyone offended by the language on the casting sheet used in the selection of actors for one of our commercials. We sought to cast an African-American in a prominent role in the commercial, and we made our selection based on the fact that he was the most talented actor.”
The car company also said they are “taking appropriate measures to ensure that such language is not used again in association with any work performed on behalf of our brand.”
