When summer touches down in Texas, Houstonians really know how to crank up the heat. Whether it’s a Friday night party, or a concert for a cause, the Space City has a constellation of star-studded events to gaze upon. This summer, mix things up in Houston at Majic’s “Live after Five” and find out your status at the 6th annual “Hip Hop for HIV” awareness concert.

First stop on mission Houston takes us to the heart of the city. Houston’s only R&B station Majic 102.1, along with Budweiser, presents the 7th annual “Live after Five” summer concert series. Surrounded by live music and cool breezes, this after work happy hour occurs once a month from April to August in downtown at Jones Plaza.

Each month music enthusiasts come out by the thousands for free live concerts ranging from old school Hip-Hop to Blues and Zydeco. The largest concert this season spotlighted the popular line dance music you hear at weddings and backyard barbeques. “Cha Cha Slide” by Line dance legend Dj Casper had 80-year-old grandmas moving and grooving, while Zydeco recording artist Lil Nathan spiced the dance floor up with the Cajun hit “L’Argent”.

Though both artists got the crowd off their feet, only one rapper could make the crowd wobble. Rapper V.I.C. rocked downtown Houston with his 2011 hit single “Wobble” and set a record for Houston’s largest line dance party with over six thousand people wobbling down the streets of downtown Houston! “Live after Five” continues though the month of August with its final concert featuring ZAPP and Shirley Murdock. Another sizzling summer event ready for lift is the Hip Hop for HIV awareness concert. Each year 97.9 The Box, the City of Houston, and the Houston AIDS Foundation come together to create this life-changing event. This event raises the volume on HIV awareness while at the same time rewards young people with a free Hip Hop Concert for knowing their statuses. Individuals between the ages of 13 and 40 visit testing locations to get tested for HIV/Aids and various STDs free of charge. In return, they receive a free sex education course, free counseling if needed, and a ticket to the only concert in Houston money can’t buy. This year’s concert features Hip Hop artists Driicky Graham, Travis Porter, Beat King, Kirko Bangz, V.I.C., and Houston rap icon Z-Ro. If you don’t know your status yet, what are you waiting for? This event is guaranteed to be a great success! With over 10,000 young adults already tested, Hip Hop for HIV 2012 takes off August 10th. Find out more information at TheBoxHouston.com.
