When the first photos emerged of Mike Epps sporting a fresh Conk on the set of Sparkle hugging Whitney Houston, there were immediate murmurs about whether he’d keep it. The hair debate continues in the actual film when Tika Sumpter’s character makes a drastic change to her coiffe.
Almost right on cue the talk of the Olympics this summer (other than Serena William’s Crip Walk celebration) was Gold Medal-winning gymnast Gabrielle Douglas’ hair. So it only seemed appropriate to ask the very diverse cast of Sparkle what their thoughts were on the never-ending Black Hair debate.
“We’re still dealing with a lot of crap from the slave fields,” says actor Omari Hardwick. “We still got a lot of Willie Lynch’s stuff floating in us. Black people are still trying to figure out who they are.”
