Mike Brown, an unarmed teenager, was shot and killed by the police in Ferguson, Missouri on Saturday. Emotions with the situation are running high in our community due to the mistreatment we face on a daily basis.

NBC decided to cover the incident by using the picture below from Twitter with Brown giving the peace sign. Many misconstrued it as a gang sign.

NBC could have used the same picture (seen below) since it came from Twitter as well, but often time when Black — specifically Black men — people are portrayed in the media, we’re seen as thugs and less than.

In solidarity over how we’re seen by the rest of America, people of color tweeted their own photos with the hashtag #IfTheyGunnedMeDown showing how they would probably been seen if they were faced in the same situation as Mike Brown.
