In 2014, there seemed to be a resurgence of quality game creation, as more great games were released than “rump-a-pum-pums” doled out by the Little Drummer Boy.

Before you get you into game overload, here are 10 that should be on everyone’s list.

Call of Duty Advanced Warfare

PS4, PS3, Xbox One, Xbox 360

Set in a not too distant future where the world’s biggest army is a PMC run by a guy that looks an awful like lot Kevin Spacey, Call of Duty Advanced Warfare was one of the most anticipated games of the year, and the sales have backed it up. It use high-tech weaponry and razor sharp senses to protect truth, justice and freedom for us all. If you are looking for a stiffer challenge you can spring for the Atlas Pro Edition which gives you access to four new maps, new weapons and a season pass.

Destiny

PS4, PS3, Xbox One, Xbox 360

Tied for “Most Anticipated Game” and also “Best-Selling Game of the Year,” Destiny is an open world first person shooter, that thinks it’s a MMORPG. Set 700 years in the future, you are tasked with defending Earth’s last remaining city from monsters looking to wipe humanity from the face of the universe. Take on the task by yourself, create your own three-man fire squad or join up with others online. The fun keeps coming with new tasks, raids, and DLCs dropping ever so often to keep players happy.

Assassin’s Creed Unity

PS4, PC Xbox One

Set during the French Revolution, the newest entry into the Assassin’s Creed Saga gives you the game play you loved, but with some new tweaks made possible through the next-gen consoles. Enhanced game mechanics include the ability to Parkour down, where in the past you were only able to Parkour up an obstacle. And now, there’s also the ability to partner up and perform missions. This latest installment is one of the most fun games to date. Viva la Revolution.

Super Smash Bros

WiiU, 3DS

What do you get when you grab 38 characters from the Nintendo Universe and put them into a fight? The only reason why many of us still have our WiiU: Super Smash Bros. What is Super Smash? For the uninitiated think, Nintendo’s version of The Hunger Games mixed with Street Fighter. The  Wii U version comes with three exclusive game modes and Amiibo figures that players can use to save games and take on the go just in case they get challenged while out.

The  Crew

PS4

Ubisoft’s open-world driving game puts you and up to three of your friends behind the wheels of some of the hottest vehicles on the road. You’ll race across the country completing an array of missions like heists, convoys, and police escapes, with some of the best graphics ever seen as your background. Think The Fast and the Furious without the over jacked guys, unless you have been hitting the gym, which we commend you for.

Halo: The Master Chief Collection

Xbox One

Before you get too happy, this isn’t every Halo game in the franchise. But for the nostalgic, the Master Chief Collection—that includes Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, Halo 2-4, multiplayer modes and additional content, plus the beta of Halo 5— is hard to beat. All the content has been remastered for the Xbox One, and should give Halo fans a rush recapturing their glory days, or for new adopters who want to find out what all the Halo noise is about.

Dragon Age: Inquisition

PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One and PC

Have an annoying younger sibling, partner, spouse, or child? Dragon Age: Inquisition might be the perfect dual present. With a reported 150 hours of game play between the main and side quests, expect to see the recipient very sparingly as they will be engrossed with the beautiful environments, multiple races, and many qualities that made the original such a favorite while doing away with some of the disappointments of Dragon Age II. The people at Bioware also revamped the combat system giving it a more fluid experience.

Far Cry 4

PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One and PC

The Ubisoft team took an excursion into the Himalayas to get perspective in developing the world of Far Cry 4 and they have come back with one of the most visually stunning games of the season. Don’t be fooled by the setting: the team hasn’t done away with the shoot-em-up madness that made Far Cry a success. This time around there are more vehicles, more weapons and you can even interact with ride or use animals to aid your battle.

Alien: Isolation

PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One and PC

When you hear Alien and game it’s almost impossible to not cringe and run in the other direction. Well Alien: Isolation seems to have finally gotten it right capturing that amazing sense of ominousness and fear that made the original Alien movie the cult classic it is. Isolation takes on a new spin on survival horror as there is no run around and shoot the Alien dead.  Isolation is just what it is; you’re alone in a ship, hiding from the Alien that is hunting you. And the slightest misstep will have you having a very uncomfortable close encounter.

The Evil Within

PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One and PC

You don’t usually want to scare the heck out of someone during the holidays, but The Evil Within is easily one of the best horror games out this season. Helmed by Shinji Mikami, the mind who thought it was fun to scare people in video games with Resident Evil, you play a detective. After watching your fellow officers get slaughtered, you awake in a terrifying world fighting for survival. Your skin will crawl playing this game, you will turn on all the lights, and you will even call your ex just to have someone to talk to. You have been warned.
