The Oscar nominations are in, and Selma has a chance to take the Academy’s highest honor. Although three-time film director, Ava DuVernay was not nominated for Best Director, her critically acclaimed film, Selma is nominated for Best Picture at the 2015 Academy Awards.

The film also picked up an Oscar nomination for Best Song, for Common and John Legend‘s song, “Glory.” The gospel-tinged track also earned the musicians a Golden Globe award at Sunday night’s ceremony.

The news is bittersweet, as DuVernay would have made history as the first African American woman to earn a Best Director Oscar nod. She was the first African American woman to score a Golden Globe nomination for Best Director, but she didn’t take home the honor.

Selma star David Oyelowo (who was also snubbed in the Best Actor category) shared his thoughts on the acclaimed director with The Hollywood Reporter

“She’s the first black woman to be nominated for best director. She’s made a little bit of history. I’m so proud of her. She’s only been doing this for five years; this is her third movie. It’s a big moment for her.”

Selma was also nominated for Best Picture at the Golden Globes, but the film lost to Boyhood, directed by Richard Linklater.

The 2015 Academy Awards, hosted by Neil Patrick Harris, will air live Sunday, Feb. 22 on ABC.
