Will Smith’s “Focus” Poised For A $23 Million Box Office Debut

According to most industry estimates, including the site BoxOfficeMojo.com, Will Smith’s 2013 father/son Sci-Fi vehicle After Earth had a domestic gross of $60 million, which left it as a commercial failure with production costs eclipsing $130 million. After an Esquire magazine interview in which Smith called After Earth “the most painful failure in my career,” there are more profitable numbers on the horizon.

The Hollywood Reporter predicts Smith’s new film, Focus, will open as the weekend’s top feature with an opening domestic gross of $22 million. That figure would both knock 50 Shades Of Grey out of the top spot after a two-week run and position Focus to be halfway towards breaking even in profits, since the film only cost $50 million to produce.
