Floyd Dent May Have Settled Suit With Inkster For $1.4 million

An agreement has been reached in the case of Floyd Dent, the man who was punched again and again by the police in Inkster, Michigan.

The settlement could be close to $1.4 million, according to the Detroit Free Press. Dent was arrested and charged with resisting and obstructing and possession of cocaine. Those charges have since been dismissed. He sued the city after the incident, but they came to an agreement before a trial took place. A video of now ex-cop, William Melendez, punching Dent, which resulted in him losing his consciousness was released in January.

The lawsuit filed against Inkster Tuesday in Wayne County Circuit Court seeks $10 million and accuses the city of excessive force, assault and battery, constitutional violations, false arrest, malicious prosecution and abuse of process.

It says a police officer ripped Dent out of his car, threw him to the ground, put Dent in a choke hold and “began brutally pummeling the head and face of plaintiff striking him 16 times with a closed fist all of which was unprovoked.”
