The Minneapolis Black Lives Matter chapter is calling out police officers for shooting a man who was allegedly handcuffed over the weekend, The Star Tribune reports.

The shooting occurred early Sunday morning after a couple was reported fighting in North Minneapolis. Police arrived to question the man Black Lives Matter members identified as Jamar Clark.

Details of what happened next differ.

Witnesses claim Clark was thrown on the floor and restrained by two officers. While allegedly handcuffed, he was shot in the head “execution-style” by one of the officers. Police, on the other hand, claim Clark was not handcuffed during the incident and tells The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, “At some point during the struggle, an officer discharged his weapon, striking the suspect.”

A crowd quickly formed around the police and Clark, who was taken to a local hospital. His family said he is currently brain-dead.

Videos of the shooting’s aftermath began floating around the web Sunday morning.

The Star Tribune reports:

A hospital chaplain and a member of the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension visited the family in a consultation room where they spent most of Sunday afternoon awaiting news about Clark.

“Please contact the BCA,” Police Chief Janeé Harteau said during a midday City Hall news conference with Mayor Betsy Hodges and BCA Superintendent Drew Evans at her side. “We need to know the truth.”

Evans said there were “handcuffs at the scene,” but that the preliminary information is that the man was not cuffed. Looking into that aspect of the case “is part of the active investigation,” Evans said. “These investigations take time, and we want to make sure we are thorough.”

Two police officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave.

BLM members and over 200 supporters rallied on Sunday at the police station’s Fourth Precinct headquarters to call on justice for Clark by releasing the names of the police officers. They believe a BCA investigation may be impartial and are sticking to the story that Clark was handcuffed when he was shot.

BLM Minnesota plans to hold a news conference Monday about the shooting. The NAACP chapter in Minneapolis has released their own statement about the incident.

A march is also planned for Clark at 3 p.m. today.
