Straight Outta Compton Producers Hit Back At Former Manager's Lawsuit
“Straight Outta Compton” Producers & N.W.A. Hit Back At Jerry Heller’s $110M Lawsuit
N.W.A.‘s dispute with former manager Jerry Heller lives on.
Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, other N.W.A. pioneers, and those behind the film Straight Outta Compton want a huge chunk of Heller’s $110 million defamation suit dropped.
The lawsuit stems from Heller’s disapproval of his portrayal in the biopic. The motion to dismiss reads in part, “The ‘Jerry Heller’ character in the film is not shown committing any improper or illegal actions, or even admitting that he had ever done anything improper. Rather, the film depicts criticisms articulated by others about plaintiff, which plaintiff’s own memoir concedes had been very publicly leveled against him … It is impossible to conceive of a serious docudrama exploring this history that would not depict these disputes, and the first amendment protects the right of film-makers to tell this story.”
Meanwhile, Ice Cube and son O’Shea Jackson Jr. are still basking in the success of Straight Outta Compton; the duo is set to present an award at this year’s Grammy Awards, notes Billboard.
Ken Ehrlich, the award show’s executive producer, thought their presence was a must, saying, “We felt it was important to represent Straight Outta Compton on the show. That movie and that soundtrack had a tremendous impact on our culture this past year.” Too bad the Oscars didn’t take note.
