Sampha met Drake in 2013 while performing as a surprise guest at a SBTRKT show in Toronto.

“He invited me to Canada to come and do some writing with him,” he told Pitchfork.

The rest unfolded naturally.

“I was producing and I did a bit of singing, too,” he said. “There was a backwards piano loop sample, which [Drake’s producer] 40 gave to me, and I worked a production around it. I started playing and singing, and Drake liked the bounce of it and started writing lyrics on his BlackBerry.”

The session was the beginning of what we’d later come to know as “Too Much” from Drizzy’s Nothing was the Same.

After working with the 6 God, releasing a solo EP, and collaborating with London’s most buzzworthy musicians, Sampha’s fully stepping out on his own. His debut album, Process, drops this winter.
