We are all for freedom of expression, but when there is a lack of taste that is tied into it, we have to take a step back and really wonder, “Why?” Rapper Lil’ Wayne referenced Emmett Till in the Future song, “Karate Chop” where he says, “Beat that p-ssy up like Emmett Till.”

Sir, what?

Airickca Gordon Taylor, a representative for Emmett Till’s family, spoke to Dr. Boyce Watkins about his lyric. According to Jet, she said,”I just couldn’t understand how he could compare the gateway to life to the brutality and punishment of death.”

Till’s story is one of the most horrific stories that our country has been a witness to, and to mock it, to compare the act of sex to someone who was kidnapped, beaten and lynched is just wildly inappropriate and insensitive.

Also, according to Hip Hop Wired, Dr. Watkins and others want to take a stand against misguided lyrics in songs:

Many potential black male father figures have been extracted from our community and sent to the concentration camps of the prison industrial complex, given dozens of years for sometimes minor offenses.  All the while, their sons grow up without fathers, and are taught on the radio how to get high and drunk every day, to kill other black men, and to disrespect the black women who raised them.  Lil Wayne’s music is a reflection of this reality, as a man who is as brilliant as the great Malcolm X has been convinced to use his powers for evil rather than good.

References like these aren’t cool at all, and hopefully he (and other rappers) will think a little harder to come up with clever punchlines instead of hurtful ones.
