The Weeknd’s 2013 tour dates are a testament to the Canadian R&B singer, songwriter and producer’s rapidly rising profile. In March 2013, the multi-talented Abel Tesfaye crosses the pond for his first U.K. tour, a trek he’ll preface with shows in Switzerland, France, Belgium, and Miami, Fla., where he’s among the artists performing at the Ultra Music Festival.
That the Weeknd has 2013 tour dates at all is somewhat interesting, since Tesfaye was originally a one-man operation focused on recording. In 2011, he released three mixtapes—“House of Balloons,” “Thursday” and “Echoes of Silence”—as free downloads. Fans and critics quickly took to his trippy, woozy, at times unsettling take on R&B, and “House of Balloons” was shortlisted for Canada’s prestigious Polaris Music Prize. In 2012, following performances at Coachella and in various U.S. cities, the Weeknd dropped his proper debut, “Trilogy,” which contained all of his previous material, plus three extra tracks.
“I make good music for long journeys,” the 23-year-old Toronto native told the NME, discussing his unlikely transition from bedroom-pop auteur to live performer. “About doing live shows he added, “There was so much pressure coming in. But I’ve played it well because being off the circuit has allowed me to practice with this band back home in Toronto for months.”
