VIA DX:

Since the start of the new year, reports have been coming in about the decline in sales of bling. Some have added that the recession was to blame. Whatever the reason, Common recently reacted to the news and spoke on his style with The Los Angeles Times.

I think it’s great that [bling] is gone,” he told the Los Angeles paper. “That really didn’t exemplify style. It was just like, ‘I have the money to buy this.’ And that ain’t what style’s about. … I think good style is about having an eye for quality things and putting them together so they have a feel and integrity and flavor.”

As some fans have suggested, Com admits that being under the Hollywood lights as an actor has made him change his style.

I think I do focus on it more. When I was rapping, my mother used to say, ‘You need to lift your hat up so people can see your face.’ And I was like ‘Look, don’t nobody care about that — they just want some good music, some music that’s knockin’. But in films . . . it’s more important. So I want to look good, I want to feel good. But most importantly, as an actor, I want to be good.”

Fans may recall that Common also worked on a line of caps. The line, Soji, is being reworked at present time and may be out with new work from Com in 2010. His interest in fashion has also landed him a gig as the man behind the new ads for the Diesel fragrance Only The Brave. Plus, he will be in charge of designing new shirts for Microsoft.

They contacted me and said they wanted me to design some T-shirts that revolve around hip-hop and 1985, which is when Microsoft Windows was introduced. It was kinda fun.”

Fans can preview the shirts, including one around “I Used to Love H.E.R.,” online.

According to Mr. Sense, people can expect to see more of him in the world of fashion soon.

We were thinking of doing a ‘waist-up’ line — belts and shirts and accessories. And since working with Diesel, I’m interested in [fragrance] too.”
