What is “Sleepy Hollow?” “Sleepy Hollow” is new fall 2013 TV show set to premiere on FOX on Sept. 16. Billed as a “modern day” version of the 1820 Washington Irving story “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” the series stars Tom Mison as Ichabod Crane, a Revolutionary War soldier who beheads a masked man with a strange bow-shaped mark on his hand. Crane is fatally wounded in the exchange and wakes up 250 years later, in the present, where he helps police detective Abbie Mills, played by Nicole Beharie, track down the Headless Horseman—the very same man he tangled with in the 1770s.

The question “What is ‘Sleepy Hollow?’” might be answered “historical fiction,” as Crane begins the FOX 2013 new TV series as one of General George Washington’s top soldiers. But there’s clearly a fantastical element, what with the time travel and Headless Horseman and all. “Sleepy Hollow” also stars Orlando Jones as police captain Frank Irving and Katia Winter as Crane’s wife, who we see in flashback. “Sleepy Hollow” has also been described as an “action mystery” show, which makes more sense.

Answering the question, “What is ‘Sleepy Hollow?’” for TVLine.com, writer Matt Webb Mitovich describes a show with a fun premise that doesn’t take itself too seriously. Mitovich enjoyed the “Sleepy Hollow” pilot episode for much of its hour runtime, though by the end, he found this new fall 2013 TV series to be too steeped in back-story and “nutty mythology.” Even so, he thinks “Sleepy Hollow”—created and executive produced by Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci—stands a chance of being a bright spot on FOX’s 2013-14 TV schedule.

“Even if ‘Sleepy Hollow’ and its far-out premise is poised to strike a chord with the genre-TV loving crowd, the time slot competition is significant, especially if “The Voice” stays strong and [“Dancing With the Stars“] somehow manages to find its footing again,” Mitovich writes.
