Where is Schoolboy Q from? Schoolboy Q is from Wiesbaden, Germany, where he was born Quincey Matthew Hanley on October 26, 1986. The rapper’s hometown may come as a surprise to fans, as he’s primarily associated with South Central Los Angeles. Why the overseas birth? His father was in the U.S. Army, and since his folks split up, he didn’t stay in Germany long. His mother moved him to Texas for a couple of years before settling in California, L.A. Weekly reports, and he grew up in South Central. As a kid, he was more interested in sports than he was in music, and he excelled at both football and basketball. He wound up playing the former at West Los Angeles College, but by the late 2000s, he’d been arrested and gotten his girlfriend pregnant, and that put an end to his dreams of athletic stardom. Instead, he turned to rapping, even though he hadn’t penned his first verse until he was 16. It wound up being a good decision, as he’s since signed a major label deal and released three albums, the most recent of which, “Oxymoron,” hit No. 1 on the Billboard 200.

Fans wondering where Schoolboy Q is from need only listen to his records — both his solo joints and the ones he’s made as part of the Black Hippy collective — to get a sense of his West Coast upbringing. Even though he’s technically a German native, Schoolboy Q is Los Angeles through and through, and he’s led a hard-knock life that’s included stints in gangs and selling drugs. Luckily, he kept from getting dragged under by that lifestyle, and in 2008, his debut mixtape, “Schoolboy Turned Hustla,” earned the attention of both Top Dawg Entertainment, which would offer him a deal, and Kendrick Lamar, a fellow up-and-comer who would make Q a part of the Black Hippy posse. Schoolboy’s second mixtape, “Gangsta & Soul,” dropped in 2009, and in 2011, he dropped “Setbacks,” the first of his three albums.

Where is Schoolboy Q from? It’s a question that’s hardly as interesting as where he’s going, as he’s worked with some of the biggest names in the game and made a name as one of the premiere West Coast rappers of his generation. Technically speaking, he might be the greatest German MC of all time.
