After failing to bring home any best picture wins at the Golden Globe Awards or the Critics Choice Awards, Selma did not win an Academy Award for Best Picture Sunday. Ava Duvernay and Paul Webb’s chronicle of Dr. Martin Luther King’s leadership of a multiyear campaign to secure equal voting rights did not win an lost to the movie Birdman.
Selma faced opposition from the moment it was released in theaters after a number of critics complained about whites—mainly president Lyndon B. Johnson—were portrayed in a negative light.
The film, which was produced by Oprah Winfrey, Christian Colson, Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner was also up for an Academy Award for the Music (Original Song) category for Common and John Legend’s “Glory.” The song “Glory” won a Golden Globe in the Best Original Song – Motion Picture category.
Prior to the awards, Duvernay tweeted, “Appreciate everyone! But don’t wish me luck. Wish me love! This journey has been beyond anything I dreamed. In a state of joy and gratitude!”
According to the site, Deadline.com, Selma saw $11.3 million in box office receipts during its first week of release. Duvernay’s tweet can be viewed below.
