In addition to being a black nationalist album, To Pimp A Butterfly was also a dedication to Tupac Shakur, one of Kendrick Lamar‘s main influences. You could conclude that from the lyrical themes and the album-ending “interview” with Shakur. Originally, you also had the album title to make that point clearer.
Lamar spoke with MTV’s Rob Markman to break down some of To Pimp A Butterfly‘s tracks. You have the always-needed insight and this great tidbit: the original name of Lamar’s sophomore album was TuPimp ACaterpillar.
“Me changing it to Butterfly, I just really wanted to show the brightness of life and the word pimp has so much aggression and that represents several things,” he said. “For me, it represents using my celebrity for good. Another reason is, not being pimped by the industry through my celebrity.”
