Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao will finally settle the question on the minds of boxing fans: Who is the best fighter in the world?
Fireworks will go off on Saturday, May 2 in the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, when these two all-time greats finally meet. While each boxer has his strength and weaknesses, they both have the potential to dominate each and every fight when they enter the ring.
Here’s every stat you need to know before Mayweather and Pacquiao square off Saturday night.
Aggression early on
Floyd “Money” Mayweather has to go out and neutralize Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao early on. The Michigan native will face an opponent that has pop along with speed. Mayweather has a size and reach advantage over Pacman, and he better use it to keep him at bay and stun him early. If not, he may have a long night ahead of him.
Pacquaio has only had trouble against fighters who throw a lot of punches per round, and Money doesn’t throw many per round. He’s always trying to be as efficient as possible. This strategy may backfire on him in this fight.
The Southpaw style
Pacquiao is a lefty, and in the ring that can be a problem for many right-handed fighters. Mayweather will have to be sharp with his movement. Any misstep can not only result in an awkward moment, but in a clash of heads and cause a cut.
Money will also have his power hand lined up for a hard shot. While his defense will be affected, he has a good chance to smash Pacman with a hard right.
Punches in bunches
Like we mentioned before, Mayweather isn’t a high volume puncher. In boxing, however, it isn’t just about trying to knock the other fighter’s head off. There is a point system.
The idea is to throw and land more than your opponent. This may be Pacquiao’s best chance to win this fight. The Filipino throws punches in bunches and they come from all different angles.
As they say, offense is the best defense. Mayweather can’t just sit back and play possum with Pacquiao. One hard punch can end any fight. Pacquiao learned that the hard way against Marquez.
Don’t lose your cool
Money is one of the best defensive boxers the sport has ever seen. His body movement and hand speed make him seem impossible to hit, and many boxers have fallen victim. They feel like they’re fighting a ghost and lose their cool. This is when most of Mayweather’s fights are won.
His opponents become frustrated and start getting reckless, then try to go for the knockout instead of fighting. Pacquiao cannot fall into that dangerous game. If he does, it’s game over.
