This Is What It's Like To Play Michelle Obama In A Movie

It’s no simple feat to take on a role as one of the most powerful and respected women in the world, but Tika Sumpter is up for the challenge. The actress will star as First Lady Michelle Obama in the upcoming film, Southside With You. And in order to tap into the First Lady’s brilliance, she’s literally hitting the books.

Sumpter caught up with Vulture at HBO’s Bessie premiere in NYC on Wednesday night, where she explained that she’s reading everything she believes Michelle Obama would have read, from Gwendolyn Brooks and Richard Wright, to The First Lady’s own Princeton dissertation. “I’m nervous because she’s Michelle Obama, who is everything every woman wants to be.”

We’re sure the talented Sumpter (who is also executive producer of Southside With You) will nail her role as a young Michelle Obama, in the film that will retell the story of the first couple’s first date in 1989. Who will play President Barack Obama? Sumpter’s staying mum on that one.“You have to wait and see.”
