Almost exactly a year after the fatal accident that left him in a coma and took the life of his good friend and fellow comedian James McNairTracy Morgan granted TODAY his first interview about the incident late last week.

Morgan and several others in a limo were rear-ended by a Walmart truck traveling at a high speed last June following a comedy performance. The impact from the truck flipped the vehicle Morgan was in and he suffered brain trauma, a broken leg and broken ribs from the crash.

Speaking with TODAY’s Matt Lauer, Morgan teared up when asked about the accident and the friend that he lost.

“I been down,” he said of his recovery. “I had my family. I had my wife, Megan, we about to be married. My daughter, my son.”

Morgan and his lawyer also acknowledged their out-of-court settlement with Walmart during the interview.

“The case is settled but the pain is always gonna be there for Jimmy Mac,” the 30 Rock star said. “He was a close friend of mines, a comrade in comedy, he was a loving man, he was a warm man. He was a good man. It just hurts me to see that he’s gone. That’s it.”

“Bones heal but the loss of my friend will never heal,” he added. We’ve known each other a long time.”
