Gabrielle Union and Dwyane Wade recently celebrated their 1-year wedding anniversary by releasing an epic video montage featuring unforgettable footage from their big day, but she recently revealed that it’s been a trying year for the couple even in the midst of their happiness.

Gabby, 42, has been relatively vague in the past about whether or not she desires to have more children in addition to her role as a stepmother to Dwayne’s 4 children, but she decided changed her semi-silent tune and open up about her struggles to conceive following her 2014 nuptials. Speaking candidly with Redbook Magazine about their plans to have kids of their own, she admitted that choosing to pursue her career in her 20s and 30s rather than have children may have cost her the chance to become a mom.

“So far, it has not happened for us. A lot of my friends deal with this. There’s a certain amount of shame that is placed on women who have perhaps chosen a career over starting a family younger. The penance for being a career woman is barrenness. You feel like you’re wearing a scarlet letter.”

Going even further into her reasons for choosing to have a career over having a family at a young age, Gabby pointed out the challenges career women face when they become mothers.

“As much as there are strides being made — you get pregnant, your career takes a hit.  You can’t have a bad day. Don’t you dare cry at work. Don’t raise your voice. Especially if you’re a black woman in corporate America — now you’re ‘the angry black woman.”

Having been a proudly permanent fixture in the lives of Dwyane’s children for the past 10+ years and getting plenty of practice raising kids, Gabby will surely make a great mother to her own child if and when the time comes.
