Kendrick Lamar recently caught up with famed music producer Quincy Jones for HYPETRAK Magazine: Volume 2.

The two met at a studio in California, where they spoke about a slew of topics including, of course, Michael Jackson’s 1982 Quincy Jones-produced album, Thriller.

“You can imagine,” Jones replies when asked to describe the studio’s energy when the project was being recorded. “We went through 800 songs, because I learned 50 years ago that a great song can make the worst singer a star and a bad song can not be saved by the three best singers in the world. So we went through 800 for Michael. We got a great singer. He’s got a great song. It’s over.”

Later on in the conversation, Kendrick Lamar spoke on being inspired and enthused by Jones’ 1989 album, Back on the Block.

“It’s funny because I was inspired by Back on the Block without even knowing it, combining hip-hop and Jazz and you was the first to do it,” Lamar says.

The Compton, Calif. rapper also asked Quincy to offer some words of advice for today’s younger generation.

“You don’t go for money or fame, because if you do [the] sh*t that moves you, it’s gonna happen,” Quincy says. “Music will never be more or less than you are as a human being, because you get back what you give, man. You can count on that.”

Elsewhere, Jones applauded Kendrick for his contributions to modern-day music.

“You’re the future, man,” Quincy Jones says. “That’s why I’m glad you’re doing the amalgamation of all of our cultures.

“That’s why people feel it,” Lamar responds. “It’s from God.”

Quincy rounds out the interview with some inspiring words: “The last thing to leave this planet, man, will be water and music.”
