Joyner says he stopped doing interviews a while ago because he didn’t like how they’d “twist the narratives” and turn his words into “click-bait” for the sake of controversy. He also took issue with how unprepared interviewers were which made him feel like it was a favor for his label or something.

Talking about why things didn’t work out at Atlantic Records, JL says it feel apart because “they didn’t know what to do with a Joyner Lucas” and the label structure didn’t fit in with how “I like to do things because I like to work in real time.” He explained that he and his manager would “fight” for budgets and marketing that the label couldn’t comprehend. Because of his experience, Lucas isn’t looking to sign with another major label again unless he structures the deal to his liking.

Though Lucas is overlooked for the most part by the mainstream Hip-Hop scene, he doesn’t feel he’s underrated but if he is then he blames himself as “It just means I’m not working hard enough.” That’s actually a constructive way to look at things.

Though he’s a lyrically inclined artist, Joyner doesn’t necessarily want to collaborate just with other spitters like Griselda or Royce Da 5’9.” He says he’s capable of getting on a track with NBA YoungBoy and other mainstream rappers as well to show he has range out there.

While many people thought “Snitch” was inspired by Tekashi 6ix9ine, Joyner Lucas says the record is “so much bigger than Tekashi” and something that’s relevant to the culture in general. After Charlamagne asked why he didn’t include Snitch9ine on the record or the video, Joyner says he didn’t want to co-sign Tekashi and possibly be “canceled” by the culture for working with him even for the sake of the art.

Touching on his newfound relationship with Will Smith, Joyner says that it came from his “Will Smith” record that he made because he felt “he wasn’t getting the respect that he deserved.” After the death of Kobe, Lucas wanted to pay homage to Will while he’s around to enjoy it. And no, Joyner didn’t write Will’s verse on the remix.

Joyner says the perception that he was signed to Atlantic Records and was rich (he wasn’t) cost him a lot of relationships as people felt he should’ve financially helped them. Interestingly enough it wasn’t until he got off the label that he began to rake in paper and “became well off” and began to start helping his loved ones.

Joyner says the intimate scenes he did with Ashanti in “Fall Slowly” was a “dream come true.” Sounds about right. That being said, JL says he got a couple of death threats from jealous men over the video. Wouldn’t be surprised if it was a St. Lunatic making those threats. Just sayin.’

Joyner reveals that he originally sent “Isis” to Eminem but when Em said he didn’t have the time, Lucas recruited Logic to hop on it (pause). Getting into his beef with Logic, Joyner admits “I think I was jealous of him.” He explained that Logic was where he was in his career where Joyner wished he was and that made him feel a ways. After having an epiphany of where he was in his life, Lucas had Royce Da 5’9” connect them and he ended up apologizing to Logic for being jealous of him.
