Black Twitter became a mainstream buzz term late last year after receiving top billing in a Wikipedia article. Developed from within the fast moving Twitter network, this growing cultural subset has become a powerful collective of varying minds from all corners of the world.

Although Black Twitter has attracted some media attention for its ability to roast people for a variety of reasons, there are some within that group that have sway in the world of media, academics, music and other fields. From humorous quips to challenging racism, the group morphed into something valuable in the crowded spaces of social media where many Black folks are often shut out.

Hip-Hop Wired has complied a list of 20 accounts you should follow on Twitter. Some of them are known for jokes, others are good for a debate. Whatever you’re into, this list should have you covered. Let us know in the comments if we missed anyone.

Desus (@desusnice)

Not much is known about Desus except that following his account will guarantee a laugh a day. New Yorkers will especially feel connected to the man, as he spews humor and hate for his beloved city sometimes in the same tweet. A bonus: he’s also a budding podcaster alongside fellow funnyman The Kid Mero.

Brokey McPoverty (@brokeymcpoverty)

Brokey McPoverty has quick wit, plenty of jokes but also tempers that with a passion for women’s issues and the like. It’s not all laughs with Brokey; she’s got something for everyone.

The Kid Mero (@THEKIDMERO)

The king of ALL CAPS, The Kid Mero found fame on his Victory Light blog before taking over Twitter and podcasting with Desus on the Desus Vs. Mero show. From giving his own family the business and barking on rappers, Mero is one to watch.

Dragonfly Jonez (@DragonflyJonez)

As noted in his Twitter bio, Dragonfly Jonez has had his tweets featured on “CNN, MSN, Yahoo, Huffington Post, TMZ, ESPN, Fox News,The Washington Post,GQ, Gawker and USA Today.” Impressive, and for good reason considering his steady output of of humor and insights.

No Cut Card (@No_Cut_Card)

No Cut Card has been getting his weight up slowly but surely, always ready with a strong comeback while engaged in his unique brand of tweeting.

Combat Jack (@Combat_Jack)

Although Combat Jack’s resume is packed after working in the music industry in several capacities, The Combat Jack Show podcast has really catapulted the outspoken media personality to new levels. With an active Twitter account and plenty of engagement with fans, Combat Jack is good money.

Lil Duval (@lilduval)

Comedian Lil Duval has been growing his massive followers list for a minute. The MTV2 host of Ain’t That America will surely add more to his list after folks get a whiff of his comedy and Twitter style.

Wayno (@Wayno119)

Wayno seems to have his hands in everything, according to his packed Twitter bio. Involved in fashion, music, and funny stories about parenthood, Wayno’s a fun follow to make.

Crissles (@Crissles)

Crissles became one of Black Twitter’s darlings last year, and also enemy number one after a mild scandal involving allegedly misused corporate funds. Despite the little bump in her career, she and fellow foul-mouth Kid Fury host a popular weekly podcast that covers everything from Hip-Hop to ratchet news.

Jean Grae (@JeanGreasy)

It’s been a great last few months for rapper, actor and author Jean Grae. With a creative uptick that includes new music, a web-based sitcom, and an audio book, Jeannie was already beloved by Black Twitter and her new output will aid in that continued quest. Doesn’t hurt that she’s one of the original funny folks of social media either.

Kid Fury (@KidFury)

The aforementioned Kid Fury definitely has his own movement aside from working with Crissles. Active across almost all social media channels, you couldn’t avoid Kid Fury if you tried.

Lizzs_Lockeroom (@Lizzs_Lockeroom)

We’ve always known that there are plenty of women who love sports just as much as men do. Lizzs_Lockeroom, a writer, model, and sports fan, has been one of the biggest voices in the sports talk arena. She’s also classy and gracious as she is beautiful so go on and hit that follow button.

RIP

Sean Price (@SeanPrice)

Sean Price, the Brooklyn rapper known for his no nonsense bars, is quite the character on Twitter. There’s always some humorous user name involved as well. Currently, he’s using the name Talcum X.

Phonte (@Phontigallo)

The rapper and vocalist has been wowing fans for years with his formidable musical talent. But what you come to find by following his Twitter account is that he can cover any base you want without being overbearing about it. He also graciously speaks with fans and can crack jokes with the best.

Luvvie (@Luvvie)

Luvvie’s been one of the faces of Black Twitter, but whether that’s something she embraces or denies isn’t known to us. What can be said, however, is that her style of telling it like it is leaves a good impression. And it seems she’s getting the attention of the Hollywood elite as evidenced in that tweet above.

Big Ghost (@BigGhostLtd)

Big Ghost, a parody account of Wu-Tang Clan swordsman Ghostface Killah, was so accurate that fans thought Tony Starks was behind the words. No rapper is safe from Big Ghost’s scathing reviews, with Drake often catching a lot of heat.
