The Library of Congress has selected a 2Pac song for the 2009 National Recording Registry.

Pac’s 1995 song, “Dear Mama” was lauded by the Library of Congress for being “a moving and eloquent homage to both the murdered rapper’s own mother and all mothers struggling to maintain a family in the face of addiction, poverty and societal indifference.”

“Dear Mama” joins Public Enemy’s 1990 album Fear of a Black Planet and Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five’s 1982 single “The Message” in the Library’s preservation archives.

Recordings selected by the Library of Congress are nominated by the Library’s preservation board and online suggestions from the general public. The recordings must be at least 10 years old and be culturally, historically or aesthetically significant.
