Athletes say some pretty stupid things. Take Dwyane Wade, for example. Just yesterday, the Miami Heat guard apologized for saying that the media would compare his team’s potential losses to 9/11.

“There’s going to be times when we might lose one, two games in a row, maybe two games, three games in a row…It’s going to seem like the world is crashed down,” he said on Sunday. “You all are going to make it seem like the World Trade has just went down again. But it’s not going to be nothing but a couple basketball games lost and we’ll have to get back on track.” – Dwyane Wade

D-Wade meant well. What he meant to say was that the media is going blow things out of proportion when it comes to the Dwayne Wade/LeBron James/Chris Bosh show in Miami next season. But what he actually said was something that could be perceived as offensive to some people out there. He’s not the first athlete to do this, either. To prove it, we tracked down 10 of the dumbest things pro athletes have ever said. Then, we broke down what they meant and translated what we heard when they said it to show just how stupid the comments really were. Listen carefully.

Retired NBA player Tim Hardaway

What He Said: “You know, I hate gay people, so I let it be known,” the former Miami Heat star said on a radio show in February 2007 in reference to the news that former NBA center John Amaechi had recently come out as a gay man. “I don’t like gay people and I don’t like to be around gay people. I am homophobic. I don’t like it. It shouldn’t be in the world or in the United States.”

What He Meant: “You know, I hate gay people, so I let it be known…I don’t like gay people and I don’t like to be around gay people. I am homophobic. I don’t like it. It shouldn’t be in the world or in the United States.”

What We Heard: “I am embarrassing myself, my family, the Miami Heat, the NBA and all of mankind right now with my comments. I am an idiot. No, seriously, I am. I am on a radio station saying idiotic things that no apology will ever make right. Listen to me destroy my legacy and my reputation in less time than it takes to pop a bag of popcorn. Let’s get this show started!”
