Opening in wide release this weekend is Conan The Barbarian. Our fierce Cimmerian warrior faces an epic battle against hulking rivals, horrific monsters, and impossible odds, as Conan (played by Jason Momoa) realizes he is the only hope of saving the great nations of Hyboria from an encroaching reign of supernatural evil.

It sounds a lot better when summarized on paper than the film actually is on screen – a film that I simply can’t recommend.  I’m certainly far from being alone in that regard because the film is suffering a 37% rating on movie aggregator site RottenTomatoes.com at the moment, with 28 critic reviews submitted thus far.

But don’t let a few voices of dissent steer you away from seeing the film, if you’re even mildly curious, and/or would prefer to make up your own mind, which is always the recommended thing to do anyway.

Conan is unabashed and unrelenting in its violence, sexuality and nudity, which explains its R rating by the MPAA, so this one’s not for the kids, even if they have their very own Conan action figures.

And despite all the action, blood and gore, it’s an still an oddly tedious film to watch.

However, if you do see it, look out for a hulking black British actor by the name of Nonso Anozie; he’s an up-and-comer to watch.

Here’s the trailer if you have yet to see it:
