EUR has an early look at a new documentary from Tavis Smiley [click here to read] called “Stand.” The 90-minute film shows interesting interplay between a diverse group of black men including Smiley, scholars/activists Michael Eric Dyson and Cornel West, singer BeBe Winans, actor Wren Brown and more.

The setting for the production is the summer of 2008. When one thinks about that time period, without a doubt, the presidential campaign by Barack Obama [click here to read] takes center stage for most people, especially for African Americans.

With the group of men, which also includes comedians, social critics – going from Memphis to Nashville to commemorate 40th anniversary of the death of Martin Luther King Jr. – it should come as no surprise that the focus of the discussions of the traveling gathering is putting in context the ascendancy of now President Obama versus black leaders of the past, present and future.
